Gore Admits He Was Wrong About Ethanol Subsidies: ‘Not Good Policy’

Former Vice President Al Gore is admitting that he was wrong about “first generation” ethanol subsidies, calling them “not good policy” and admitting his support of them were clouded by his presidential ambitions.
From Reuters:
“It is not a good policy to have these massive subsidies for (U.S.) first generation ethanol,” said Gore, speaking at a green energy business conference in Athens sponsored by Marfin Popular Bank.
“First generation ethanol I think was a mistake. The energy conversion ratios are at best very small.
“It’s hard once such a programme is put in place to deal with the lobbies that keep it going.”
He explained his own support for the original programme on his presidential ambitions.
“One of the reasons I made that mistake is that I paid particular attention to the farmers in my home state of Tennessee, and I had a certain fondness for the farmers in the state of Iowa because I was about to run for president.”
Gore also said that rising food prices could be fueled by the ethanol craze. “The competition with food prices is real,” he said.
But Gore didn’t give up on a fuel subsidies altogether. Instead, he supports technology that extracts fuel from other things such as wood and grass. He called that process “second and third generation” ethanol, and supports it because he says it won’t compete with food.
UPDATE:
As Noel Sheppard over at NewsBusters reminds us, “Gore was the tie-breaking vote in the Senate mandating the use of ethanol in 1994.”
Sheppard shares his thoughts:
So more than ten years ago, Gore supported an expensive, “not good policy” because he thought it would help him get elected president.
Yet media don‘t believe he’d misrepresent the threat of manmade global warming in order to become extremely rich.
UPDATE II:
As Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey points out, a 2005 Slate report shows that the next generation of ethanol production as touted by Gore is just as expensive as the “old” kind:
David Pimentel, a professor of ecology at Cornell University who has been studying grain alcohol for 20 years, and Tad Patzek, an engineering professor at the University of California, Berkeley, co-wrote a recent report that estimates that making ethanol from corn requires 29 percent more fossil energy than the ethanol fuel itself actually contains.
The two scientists calculated all the fuel inputs for ethanol production—from the diesel fuel for the tractor planting the corn, to the fertilizer put in the field, to the energy needed at the processing plant—and found that ethanol is a net energy-loser. According to their calculations, ethanol contains about 76,000 BTUs per gallon, but producing that ethanol from corn takes about 98,000 BTUs. For comparison, a gallon of gasoline contains about 116,000 BTUs per gallon. But making that gallon of gas—from drilling the well, to transportation, through refining—requires around 22,000 BTUs.
In addition to their findings on corn, they determined that making ethanol from switch grass requires 50 percent more fossil energy than the ethanol yields, wood biomass 57 percent more, and sunflowers 118 percent more. The best yield comes from soybeans, but they, too, are a net loser, requiring 27 percent more fossil energy than the biodiesel fuel produced. In other words, more ethanol production will increase America’s total energy consumption, not decrease it. [Emphasis added]

Posted on November 22, 2010 at 10:43amhey 13 It is very apparent to me that what we need is balance. Less accusations and partisanship and more co-operation. Less anger and more concern. The Right is not evil, but communism IS. The right wants to restore our liberties and individual responsibility. The left wants to take care of those people who can’t do it on their own. Both of these goals are honorable. Our natural resources are getting very expensive, and our needs increase every day. Terrorism affects everyone, and our security should be a priority for both sides. If the Left can’t do it without despotism then let the free market have a chance. There is no reason to imprison ourselves with intrusive laws and statutes. Be brave. Not fearful. Be faithful. Not full of doubt. Helpful, not a hindrance to freedom.

Are you a mindless sheep willing to do whatever it takes to install world governance? Are you an American who is proud of his nation and wants to get it back from the greedy overlords that are threatening our very lives.
The Tea party took the first step toward restoration, and put some people in office who have a chance to begin the purge that must take place if we are to survive as a nation. The progressive movement IS the push for the New World Order, and can’t be the answer.

Modern cars can run directly on it and it doesn’t take 25 gallons of fresh water per gallon made to produce it. Ethanol is the dumbest thing there ever was as it is an additive that is harsh on engines and not a primary fuel source. This is all a big lie and they don’t want people to know the truth.

I believe, this admission of personal greed and governing stupidity will be measured as favorable, as compared to those who stupidly throw around the word ‘stupidly’ for the sake of racial greed. Does Gore wish to reshape the 2012 options? Gore is overloaded with opportunities, to confess greed and stupidity. Will he ever confess the biggies? Big Government is bad, free enterprise rules, representing the consenting governed is the only priority, the fundamentals of the Constitution, fiscal conservatism. I think not. The increasing mess made by the ruling party in DC coupled with the decisive surge at the start of this month, those on the far left with governing greed,… well, their heads thrash, speculating on manipulating freshened hope.
Hillary has clearly decided to appear as the lead, the cool and calm lead, presumably hands off. But remember, she is a Progressive with Pragmatic overtones. Full reversal, a flip-flop, is, well progressively pragmatic. She stands prominently above the fray with no need to contend. Simply continuing as she is, holds her as striking down vantage. Does she speculate, post 11-2-10, her party is doomed to completely loose 12. Does she now speculate 2016 is the time to surge back? Will the likes of Gore and Dean make 12 a challenge? Might Hillary remain above it all, ready to rescue the party from utter chaos as the party decides on 12?
Gyrating political has-beens, always raise questions. When, based on past rhetoric, politicians have distanced themselves from the heart and sole of American Exceptionalism, what they plot for theirs, and our, future will serve us poorly. However, It is entertaining to watch them flap in the high winds of one another and deepening currents of America’s best. The concept that their days are well over will be slow to dawn… some will always remain in the dark. Go for it Gore, you have a ton to confess and it will be good for your soul and the heart of the nation.

There is corn in almost every processed food plus it is the primary live stock food. Ethonol costs so much to make it add around 40 cents to the price of every gallonof gas. It is not economical to make ethonol without Gov’t subsidies. Making ethonol mandatory actually increased our demand for oil by 15%. Ethonol/gas gets fewer miles per gallon than straight gas. It also allows unscrupilious dealers to water down gas. For every gallon of water they add they make $2.80+ pure profit. Watch the tail pipe of the car ahead of you at a red light.
