Gothic Felines? Woman Pierced Cats Ears, Necks and Tails...to Make Them More MarketableA Pennsylvania woman finds herself under house arrest after piercing her cats’ ears, necks and tails. After gothifying the kitties, she then listed them online for $100 each. Apparently, she thought that the minor “improvements” she made would make the felines more marketable (it’s a tough economy, right?).

Aside from piercing the cats’ various body parts, the woman also docked their tails. In case you didn’t know, docking is a process that results in the removal of a portion of animals’ tails. The procedure is typically performed on working dogs and livestock in an effort to prevent infection (i.e. there’s typically a method behind the madness).

As you can imagine, it didn’t take long for PETA and the local ASPCA to catch wind of what had occurred. The woman, of course, has been penalized for her actions. Consumerist has more:

[The woman] was convicted of animal cruelty, and the Superior Court of Pennsylvania recently affirmed her sentence and conviction on the grounds that no one could possibly be stupid enough to think that this was a good idea. I paraphrase…

[She] defended her actions, using the examples of declawing surgery for cats and debarking surgery for dogs, both of which are controversial but legal. The court’s response was that these procedures have a purpose, while putting a metal ring through the scruff of a cat‘s neck kinda doesn’t.

Just an FYI to those of you out there considering animal piercings and cosmetics: Probably not a good idea.

    OK, now go after the countless parents that pierce babies‘ and toddlers’ ears – that is worse than piercing the body part of an animal – the baby has no say over it and it is needless cruelty done to a baby because of vanity on the part of the parents. I am not for animal cruelty, but we as a nation worry too much about animals and not enough about cruelty done to humans…. starting with abortion

      Piercing babies ears is no less cruel than subjecting a cat to piercings. They are similar in innocence and helplessness. Child cruelty and animal cruelty are equally horrendous on different levels. Either one are reprehensible!

    It is disturbing how people can rationalize their actions. Just knowing that people can be that oblivious sickens me. To see that poor kitten and it’s ears, it makes me hug my kitties even closer. She needs a good swift kick for this.

      That would certainly be appropriate. Cats, by the way are not “property” anymore than our Children are Property. When we adopt a cat, we are to be caring stewards. This kind of abuse is intolerable. Would this woman do the same horrendous act to an infant child? I am not a violent person….but I have a vision of someone playing basketball with this lady’s noggin.

    I Think they should ban cat sales just like in San Fransisco! /end sarcasm

    While I don’t see this as animal abuse. I do find this unnatural therefore uncomfortable to the animal. While speaking for myself I wouldn’t do it, but they are the owners property and as long as theyre are fed clean and healthy it doesn’t matter what I or anyone thinks.

    I think its cruel every time my cat injures baby bunnies and leaves them to suffer on my porch where I have to end up putting them out of their misery. People might even call me cruel for doing that. I think people who dress their dogs and cats up in sweaters/jackets etc..is cruel because it is unnatural BUT it is not my business what they do with their property or how they raise them.

    I find people raising children and piercing,tattooing, etc.. much more offensive.

    Dear Blaze,

    My name is Miss Elvira, I am a Cat, & I blog.

    My Human has allowed me to use this space to opine on this Knucklehead, & declawing.

    Mad Macedonian, myself, & my mentor, Nikita Cat, are all fans of GB.

    What this woman did was cruel, disgusting, & a few other choice descriptions that aren’t translatable from the original Felinese.

    Yes, Declawing IS legal, but that doesn‘t it’s right.

    Out of ignorance our Human had it done to the Cats in his life, before Nikita, & Nikita, as well, in 1998, but in recent years he made friends online w/several fellow Cat Lovers who helped him learn more, & decide that, when I entered his life, last July, as a kitten, not to declaw me.

    I’ve not trashed the house, or clawed the hell out of Daddy, or Nikita, at the drop of my considerable female whim, & our vet trims my nails several times a year.

    Nikita never had problems, from declawing, but still some cats might.

    We are collecting a list of Declaw links to add to our collection of Health links in our info rich sidebars, but in the mean time, please, I implore readers, who have, recently gotten, or are contemplating getting, a cat, to do the neccessary Googling, & talking with your vet, to educate yourself, & make the best, informed, decision you can about this, as it is for life.

      Being concerned about cruelty to animals doesn’t mean that someone is oblivious to abortion. I am very pro-life, and also being appalled by cruelty to animals doesn’t mean I am not even more concerned about killing helpless babies. I think you are being a bit over-critical here, though I understand your committment to ending abortion.

    this makes my blood boil. If people want to disfigure themselves in this way, that is their own right and their own business. It is WRONG and CRUEL, however, to put animals through this pain and indignity. As far as I am concerned, the kittens have more intelligence than the person who did this to them, who had to be cruel and selfish. ARRRG!!!

      Absolutely AGREE.
      Animals are our COMPANIONS, to be loved, respected and cared FOR, not treated like merchandise that you can modify to catch the public eye.
      I’m glad PETA exists, even if it has been hijacked like so many other great agencies by radicals (like the ones who have ruined a whole community of farming families and their livlihoods in CA by turning off their water to preserve some 2″ fish!)

      Thats because you have been de-sensitized about human piercings and also its been going on since humans have inhabited this world. I’m not a big fan of piercings, although my ears are pierced but I dang sure see NO reason to subject a poor animal to it, when its not needed. All they know is that they are being subjected to pain. How insensitive and just not thinking straight. “Every knee will bow and every tongue confess”

      And I hope “stupid” does time. Cats need a tail to balance and studs in the ears aren’t good for anything, but to rip the ear when they get caught on something.
      For this one, as an animal lover, I am glad that PETA and the local ASPCA got involved.

      This is one time the events show someone going beyond the ‘stupid is…’ level; this is to the level there is not enough vitreol in my lexicon to make it do justice in my feelings of what she has done.

      I am generally skeptical of both the actions and motives of PETA and the SPCA. However, in this case they are dead-on right. That woman should face legal penalties. This is clear cruelty and a depraved anthropomorphizing of animals.

      @Snowleopard, I remember that line frequently. :) It’s from a very good, very funny movie. I would say which one, but it will get edited out. To give you a hint, the title starts with an S and rhymes with “hatch,” it’s directed by the former Mr Madonna, Guy Ritchie, and stars Brad Pitt (as an Irish gypsy fighter) and Jason Statham. If you enjoy that British sense of humor, this is one of the better movies out there!

      Not only do I not like piercing animals, I dislike clipping ears for “appearance.” If God had intended for animals to be pierced and cut, He would have made them that way to begin with!

      The woman in the story needs a keeper, not allowed to be on the streets unattended. She has the brain of a pea. Sorta brings encinom to mind.

      Wow – I don’t agree with what she did, but see no reason for the government to get involved. If the cats became more marketable she would sell them and do more. If not (which I presume would be the case by how disgusted everyone here is at what she did) then she would not be able to sell them and she would not do it again. Seems to me that the cats are her property.
      I myself am a dog person, but wouldn’t buy one if it had piercings (or encourage piercings of any other animals).

      Good grief! I can’t imagine!
      I cut my own hair, do my own nails and Bucky’s nails. Our nails grow at the same rate.

      Bucky does have his own bathroom, though, with his picture on the door. I put a shower hose in place of the shower head so I could bathe that short little boy.

      I can’t my cat to sit while I put the hairball treatment on my their paws HOW did she get them to sit still while doing this??? and my cats think it’s cruel when I require them to wear a collar and leash when taking them outside..LOL..
