Gov. Christie’s Big D.C. Speech Wows, Increases Presidential Buzz

You know there’s buzz about you when you can deliver an eloquent, and captivating, political speech, deny you have any presidential ambitions during said speech, and the only thing anyone wants to write about afterwords is the subsequent non-existent presidential buzz.

That’s exactly what happened to GOP New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie today.

In a speech in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute, Christie didn’t do himself any favors in trying to quell conservative excitement over his supposed non-existent ambitions to run for president in 2012. Then again, about the only thing he could do to curb such enthusiasm is to become a mute. Or in Christie’s words, “commit suicide”:

“Listen, I threatened to commit suicide, I did, I said, ‘what can I do short of suicide to convince people I’m not running?’” Christie said. “Apparently, I actually have to commit suicide to convince people I’m not running.”

He continued, “You have to feel in your heart and in your mind that you’re ready for the presidency. And there are lots of people who will run just because the opportunity presents itself.

“That’s not a reason to be president of the United States,” Christie said. “You have to believe in your heart and in your soul and in your mind that you are ready and I don’t believe that about myself right now. So that’s why I said I won’t run and I can’t imagine that changing.”

The speech, which covered everything from American exceptionalism to problems with Social Security, blended serious political discussion with moments of appropriate comedy:

But Christie also had a message for the GOP candidates he supported during the 2010 campaign:

“If the people who I campaigned for don’t stand up and do the right thing, the next time they’ll see me in their district [it will be] with my arm around their primary opponent,” Christie said. “Because you asked me to put my reputation on the line for you based on a promise that you were going to deal with these hard issues.”

The speech seemingly sent thrills up many people’s legs, who considered it an excellent oration by a popular local politician who dominated on a national stage. Even Politico, which graded the speech, gave it an “A”:

Substance: Moving the nation toward “fiscal sanity,” reforming pensions and cutting into politically-sensitive “entitlement programs,” using New Jersey’s last year as a model.

Presentation: With notes but no text, threaded humor smoothly into a serious speech.

Conservative red meat: He studiously avoided sounding partisan, including repeated references to his cross-river “soulmate,” New York  Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Audience reaction: In a word, he killed.

Obama bash: “What I was looking for [in Obama's State of the Union] was for my president to challenge me. … And it was a disappointment that he didn’t. ”

OVERALL GRADE: A Not only achieved what he wanted to with a call to bipartisan, budget-cutting, pension reform and education improvements, but he again got to leave them wanting more by saying for the 100th time that he’s not running in 2012. Is he believable?

Politico’s news report also gave the speech high marks:

Chris Christie took Washington by storm today in his first national speech, with a call for details behind entitlement reform and concrete choices now to save a nation “teetering on the edge of disaster” from years of fiscal debts that are coming due.

The free-wheeling, hour-long speech was delivered by Christie without prepared text and with a natural ease at the podium, and it is sure to skyrocket the buzz about the New Jersey first-term governor’s presidential prospects, which he continues to insist are nonexistent for 2012.

“We’re on a path to ruin,” Christie said before the rapt crowd, mocking people who he said are afraid to touch proverbial third rails of politics.

National Review posted a poll on its website asking readers what they think, in light of Christie’s speech, the governor should do. Not surprisingly, they want him to run in 2012:

Gov. Christies Big D.C. Speech Wows, Increases Presidential Buzz

That’s not surprising considering the substance, which Politico captured in some of the speech’s best quotes (more of which can be found here):

  • “What I was looking for was for my president [in the State of the Union] to stand up and challenge me and say to me and everybody else in the country and say ‘now’s the time to fix things and I’m going to lead you there.‘ And it was disappointing that he didn’t do that.” [Watch video of this comment on The Blaze.]
  • “If you don’t deal with Social Security and Medicaid, then you’re participating in a failing proposition.”
  • “Some people say I’m too combative, some people say I’m too much of a fighter. … I’m fighting now because now is when it matters the most.”
  • “We have to fix Medicaid because it’s not only bankrupting the federal government, it’s bankrupting every state government”
  • “When we say entitlement programs we should be specific. You’re gonna have to raise the retirement age for social security. Whoo hoo! I said it and I’m still standing here. I did not vaporize into the carpet. We have to reform medicare… once again lightining didn’t strike.”

Over at Townhall, Greg Hengler reacted to the speech by saying, “Democrats: Be afraid. Be very afraid.”

That‘s especially chilling considering Christie’s “not running.” But if he keeps giving speeches like this, he might need to be put on suicide watch.

    Caution: For a NJ conservative I like him fine. But he is not a constitutional conservative. He speaks of greatness and big moves but I have yet to hear him speak of downsizing government. Maybe I just haven’t heard it but until I do…. I like him fine for NJ but not the country as a whole.

    As for the MSM… even though he is considered conservative they’ll endorse him as he will help split the conservative vote and once again give us a “McCain” type moderate.

So please stop saying Christie for 2012 until you really know what you are asking for. Just like with Obama.

    WOW! CHristie WoW!
    Oh yeah, after all who knows who FOX News will push to be their FOX New’s President, NOT YOURS.
    FOX News caught in dirty tricks against Ron Paul, talking about an underlying agenda. FOX News needs to fire these bastards immediately, including Bill O’ Reilly for trying to smear Ron Paul as he did on his show last night. It seems that FOX News will distort, lie and cheat on the fair and balanced news, because fair and balanced does not mean trustworthy. It means that they want to slant and forge the news broadcasts to brainwash you into accepting their agenda. Is it only a few at FOX, or is it the entire FOX News Network staff. What they are doing at FOX is distorting and photoshopping the news for their own agenda. A shameful act and one that deserves an apology and the firing of those in their staff that sanctioned this outright shameful lie. O‘Reilly should resign if he’s man enough to own up to his part in this sordid affair.

      What is this big deal and all you Ron Paul supporters? I don’t have a big problem with him, but he can hardly put a sentence together without getting ahead of himself, and though I agree with most of what he says, he doesn’t stand a chance with most of the Independant voters I think. The man looks like an unmade bed, and does not come across good on so many levels. We listened to his whole speech at work yesterday. I had already listened to it. I like him fine, but if you watch him, a lot of what he says is lost…he has no chrisma. As I said, I like what the man is saying, but do I think he is electable??? I doubt it..Donald Trump either. He has to much baggage, though he would be a GREAT International financial advisor. Daniel’s was boring…he didn’t stand out at all, and we tried our best to make it through his whole speech, and it wasn‘t even good enough to be left on the Blaze in it’s entirety. Only a portion of it was there yesterday. Herman Cain, said a lot of great things, and I agree with the man. I think he is serious and would probably do a good job, but his ebonics is a put off for a lot of folks as was noted in our listening to his speech at work yesterday. I’d be PROUD to have him as a president, but could he get enough of the vote to beat Obama??? I doubt it. I LOVED Allen West. He is a wonderful man I am sure, but he has yet to be proven…he just now got into office…let’s see how he does in his new office before we start putting him up as a Presidential candidate. Face it folks, we really don’t have anyone who stands out that much…Ron Paul supporters aside…there are not enough of them, and like I said, he doesn’t stand a chance Nationally because he looks like an unmade bed. Maybe Rand after he proves himself in the Senate, then he might come closer. Sorry Ron Paul supporters..this is just what I am hearing…I talk to folks from all over the US everyday, and he just isn’t causing the tingle you seem to feel.

      The point was less specifically about Ron Paul and more about how incredibly dishonest Fox news is. It also shows their bias against Ron Paul and it’s why you hear so much negative about him… or nothing at all.

      And charisma? Really? Is that what is required of a president? I’d rather have someone who is smart, knows what is wrong, is honest, and shoots to fix it. I chose my doctor because she knew what she was doing, not because I enjoyed listening to her feed me BS.

      The nomination process should be changed and you should only have a shot at the ticket if we asked you to, no ring, no hat to throw into it, no, you should be such a notable citizen that, like Washington, you should beseeched to run.

      Listen….One thing he said that we shouldn’t forget was that everyone in Wash is waiting for the other guy to say something that they can capitalize on. That’s a sorry commentary about our gov. Neither party, until the recently-elected Rebub’s, have had the guts to ‘just say it’. Christie has tapped into that reality, and people love it. We’re actually starving for it.
      Now, not to pour water on Christie, but I want to know about the muslim judge he appointed. I’m very reluctent to believe a Muslim would put himself in danger of being targeted by rad-Muslims by abiding our Constitutional laws.

      Mr. Christie should run for president. He has an obligation to New Jersey that I understand, but as a countryman he could do more for New Jersey as Executive of the Union. I would love to see the ballot filled up with people like Pence, Bachmann, Paul and Christie.

      Chris Christie should NOT run for President. He should honor his word to New Jersey. He should campaign for EVERY state to elect a governor like him, and recapture States’ rights.

      Christ Christie and Sarah Palin should not accept a place on the ticket, but should pound away from the sidelines.

      Cain/Bachmann
      or
      Cain/West

      With the support of people who are AMERICANS first, and Republicans second, Cain will win and we will survive, and New Jersey will get healed and be a model State, and fat people will have a super-role model to hold up to the country and say “fat is waaaaaay better than stupid”!!!

      If Chris Christie does not run in 2012, I am writing him in on my ticket.

      I’ve been reading a lot of posts in favor of Romney, but I must caution you that in Romney, you will only get more of what Obama and Bush had to offer the country. Don’t forget that Romneycare was the template for Obamacare (the same economist who crafted Romneycare, in fact, helped write Obamacare. I learned that in an article here.). If you need another reminder, I strongly encourage you to look up videos of the presidential debates prior to the ‘08 election. Romney was wishy-washy and would sometimes flip on his stance mid debate, while he would laugh along with all the other candidates at Ron Paul for his “fearmongering” warnings of an imminent economic crisis– the same crisis that became President Elect Obama’s first topic of address, after the elections but before the inauguration. I support the Tea Party movement 100%, as do many people here; please do the movement proud by remaining strong in your values and educated in your stance.

      @GreatAmericanBeckFan

      Everything I have heard or seen or read about Christie has been good, by my standards of judgment. I appreciate Stage_X_Tuning’s advice on specific things to search for, though. Be certain I will look them up. If I find I have been mistaken or mislead in my opinions, then I will change them. If I was the type of person to “jump on [a] political bandwagon” I would be running around with the pro-communist and socialist groups that are so common to my age group.

      I do not get my information from posts, by the way; I believe you have misread my comment. I said I learned about the common denominator in Romneycare and Obamacare in an article, not a post. I am a very thoughtful young lady; I followed it up with research of my own, as I always do before formulating an opinion. Here is the link to the original article I read, as well as a couple others that you might find interesting as follow-ups. I know Wikipedia can be suspect sometimes, but its citations regarding this matter checked out. Check them yourself if you are skeptical.

      http://www.theblaze.com/stories/coming-soon-the-obamacare-comic-book/
      http://econ-www.mit.edu/files/128
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Gruber_%28economist%29

      Prior to this knowledge, I already knew that Romneycare held many elements of Obamacare, such as the individual mandate. In my home state, a bill was co-sponsored by Bob Bennett in early 2009 that was presented as an alternative to Obamacare. My research on this bill found that it, too, used Romneycare as a template, and also included some of the common elements of it and Obamacare. I did not find this bill to be appealing, either. I also recall reading a quote in the newspaper from Mitt Romney stating his displeasure that he was not consulted by Obama about healthcare, since he had already reformed it in Massachusetts.

      As to “throwing my vote away…” well, I am an ideologue to the core. I will not vote for a person whom I feel does not represent me, even if they do happen to have an (R) after their name, or are backed by billions of dollars that my candidate of choice is not. In the 2010 election, I voted mostly Republican on the big ticket positions, but Constitution party for one of the senators and Libertarian for a representative, and I stand by those votes — even though neither of them won.

      I’ve actually put a lot of thinking into the “splitting the vote” issue, and have an interesting idea as to a solution to this problem…not that it really matters anyway, just a slightly tangential remark.

      On the other hand, there exists a growing list of words and deeds that cast him in anything but a conservative light:

      * His budget passed only after three conservative Republicans were bullied into voting for it and the savings achieved in the budget were done at the expense of new taxes, new fees, federal Stimulus funds and accounting gimmicks; the 2% property tax cap will actually cause taxes to skyrocket; he has yet to propose the “across the board” tax cuts he promised as a candidate; the budget actually INCREASES state expenditures by 6% and the number of staff in the Governor’s office making $100,000 per year increases by ten;
      * His confrontation with the unions is pure Kabuki theater with nothing accomplished but acrimony; he has yet to lay off a single state employee and his proposed 2011 state worker reduction plan is little more than window dressing;
      * He has populated his cabinet with notorious liberals while firing the only true conservative – after slandering him;
      * He has endorsed notorious RINO candidates in the 2010 mid-term election while avoiding (with one notable exception) contact with conservative candidates;
      * He supports a multi-state Cap & Trade scheme known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and is so committed to Cap & Trade that he used funds raised from RGGI’s carbon auctions to help balance the budget; he has directed that state funds be appropriated to subsidize “green” technology ventures such as off-shore windmills;
      * He has refused to join other state attorneys-general in a joint lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Obamacare while accepting federal funds for the implementation of a similar program on a statewide level;
      * He is on record saying that he does not believe illegal aliens are here illegally; he has indicated that he supports amnesty for illegals; he generally favors strict gun control and he supports construction of the Ground Zero Mosque even as he condemns those who oppose it.

      In this multi-part series we will address all of these issues with specificity and abundant documentation. So buckle in and – if you are a member of the “Christie-for-President-in-2012″ fan club – prepare to be awakened by some very inconvenient truths.

      Physicist_in_training…Good for you holding to principles. Therein lies part of the problem for the last 25 years. The media helps get the most progressive Republican the nomination and frequently the true voting conservatives stay home rather than put a crack, if even hairline, in their armor of character. For many of us, the last few elections have been about holding the nose and voting for the candidate the least distasteful! MOST of the Republicans who have their proverbial toe in the political waters right now are RINO’s. Christie, DeMint, West, and Bachmann all have some great qualities and not surprising the same candidates are usually hammered with any coverage from the main stream media. The downside of the upcoming elections is ANYONE is going to look conservative compared to BHO. Most, if not a true conservative Constitutionalist, will likely only preside over the crumbling of the Republic if elected. Additionally, I would still not be surprised if a major event perfectly timed occurred prior to the election to rally at least a portion of the Dem base to help swing the electorate behind a politically wounded POTUS. It truly makes you reflect on what the last round of politicians and the electorate had to be thinking during the fall of the Roman Empire! Stay on track holding true to your beliefs and perhaps we will have a Physicist to vote for one day. I hope you find or have an equally thoughtful Mr. Physicist as even during the upcoming turmoil, you have to try to see the positives in every situation in life.

      I like what Christie says fiscally, BUT…..

      There are other issues that I’m NOT so HAPPY with.

      He IS FOR GUN CONTROL. He also has some questionable ties to questionable MUSLIMS. He appointed a longtime mouthpiece for radical Islamists to be a judge and defended a radical imam Mohammed Qatanani, head of one of the largest mosques in NJ against the DHS in 1999. Mohammed failed to mention that he had been convicted in an Israeli military court for being a Hamas member and supporting Hamas.

      We NEED some CAUTION and to have time to investigate people before we jump on the bandwagon to usher them into the WH. Look how many wanted Scott Brown to run for president. He’s just another McCain progressive.

      We don’t need more of what we already have had.
