Gov. Christie: ‘We Cannot Wait’ to Reform Education

Last week, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took his plans for education reform to the Oprah show to unveil a new public/private venture in the Newark school district. This week, the governor is taking his case to the state level, introducing a number of tough-love reforms aimed at improving classroom achievement in the Garden State.
On Tuesday, Gov. Christie announced new plans to tie classroom achievement to pay increases and career advancement for teachers, redefining the standards for teacher performance and moving away from a seniority- or tenure-based system. In its place, Christie hopes to implement a more top-to-bottom overhaul of New Jersey classrooms.
“We cannot wait. Your children are sitting in these classrooms today. We cannot wait to make it better,” Christie told the local CBS affiliate’s Marcia Kramer.
Unqualified teachers will feel the lash. The governor is demanding that teachers in kindergarten through fifth grade actually pass tests in reading and math in order to be certified.
“It might lead to the firing of teachers and principals who hurt our children,” Christie said.
Christie’s planned reforms include prohibiting salary scales based on seniority and awarding tenure and pay raises based on classroom performance.
“We are paying a fortune for something that is not giving our children the hope and the feeling that their tomorrow can be better than their future,” Christie said.
While a number of educational experts applauded the governor’s actions, a spokesman for the NJ Education Association condemned the plan, claiming Christie was “trying to implement education reform without any input from educators.”
“He is with excellence in education for everyone by prioritizing teachers — their brilliance, their art and their skills. We will dramatically improve the quality of education of our kids in New Jersey, particularly those most in need,” said Derrell Bradford, director of Excellent Education for Everyone.

Posted on September 29, 2010 at 7:26amZcat, I actually hope Mr. Christie stays where he is and fixes Jersey. I would like there to be Mr. Christies in a lot more states, particularly in the northeast as well as here in North Carolina. If you get out into the rural areas of places like New York State, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and the like you will find common sense people that think like Mr. Christie. Some folks in earlier posts talk about strengthening our relationships with the local and state officials. I for one am tired of the career politicians. They voting themselves benefits far in excess of the norm or the ability of private industry to provide. The root of most of the maladies in our country lies at the feet of the unions. I am not talking about the rank and file people but rather everyone above them. They are working for themselves not for the people that pay the dues.

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 11:24pmGovernor Christie has pointed out a serious flaw with government in general. Because of unions, no matter how hard you work as a government employee, you are going to end up with the same raise as the slacker and the mediocre. No wonder many government offices show such indifference toward the public. If raises were based on performance, you would get better quality government and the lazy would be weeded out.

No, that is what your side does with politicians, alas, the projection doesn’t work here. Christie is human; that’s how we like them. I know progressives hate humans, as the majority of their policies in some way are about eliminating them, minus themselves, of coarse.) He is the archetype we need everywhere. Any problem has more layers than are usually addressed, but Christie appears to be tackling many of them at once, and with something as important as education, he is putting himself on a notable, if not admirable trajectory. Cheers to CC!

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 11:35pmI agree. Why else would we have to sort through so much revisionist history to find the truth about out nation and our founders? After an educated electorate the thing the left fears most are those of us over 60. We remember the simplicity of America when it WAS great. We remember a nation with freedom from sea to sea. We remember when the 4th of July was celebrated BY THE PEOPLE and not FOR us by the state….. ostensibly because we might hurt ourselves. We remember a nation that set goals then turned loose the free enterprise system to meet those goals. We are still the ONLY nation on earth to have put people on the moon and brought them back safely. Now we don’t even have a space program in any real sense.
Our past is being redacted while our future is being stolen. We now live in a country where a man can be fined $5000 for the crime of giving away the excess vegetables from his garden….. practicing the art of charity. This isn’t a slippery slope….. it‘s a freaking cliff and we either figure out how to fly or we’re all going to end up like that coyote in the old road runner cartoons. (Oh….. sorry…. the younger of you won’t know about those as big brother has banned them for being too violent)

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 9:47pmOkay, I am a high school teacher.. a CONSERVATIVE teacher, and let me tell you what is really up.
If I have students do ALL work in the classroom, I get one hundred percent completion of all work; I can get them to work.
However, if I send ANY work home…HOME mind you..to be completed, I get fifty percent turn in.
WHERE is it not working????????
I learned early on…I asked a non-performing student, “What do you think you are going to do with your life.” … His response tells the story. He looked at me with surprise and said, “I am gonna go on welfare like my mother!”
TRUE story… this same student was arrested three years later in my classroom by the police, handcuffed, taken away, and did three years in jail for a gang murder.
If someone wants to contact me for info on this for an article.. go for it.
I don’t like everything about public schools… but we deal with what we get from the welfare suckers. Over half our school is on “free” breakfast and lunch programs.

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 10:13pmRob I really do sympathize with what you are saying about homework, however, there are simply more problems than who isn’t helping the children. When you have only one parent in the home and that parent works two jobs there simply isnt any time left to ensure the work is done. I fully understand the obstacles teachers face every day with children who just haven’t learned what they need to progress. The answer isn’t fire the teachers or punish the teachers, but the teachers must take some responsibility. When a child reaches the 5th grade and is unable to read obviously the school system has failed. The programs such as no child left behind where a child is giving a passing grade and allowed to move on, wether or not he/she has learned what is needed, coupled with many teachers who just do not care about their students is one of the biggest problems with the education system. In many cases there is nothing that can be done to help out the home life. The only option is to educate the next generation so they will be able to be there to assist their children when it comes time for school. The best way to do that is to remove the obstacles such as teachers who simply will not or can not teach. As a high school teacher wouldn’t it be wonderful if 10 years every child that enters your class could read and do long division the first day?

I had teachers that actually cared whether we understood the subject matter. Dumbing them down is a great way to make new democrats. I saw Frank Luntz on Hannity‘s show last night and was appalled by the young people’s (less than 30) lack of critical thinking. I don’t know where they get their news but their future is being mortgaged by the feds. The sense of entitlement is so pervasive that I fear a society of serfs. It does not suprise me, though, about those kids. I have been working that generation for years and they continue to prove to me that they do not have any lateral thinking skills. Very, very few of them are able to adapt to change, from my experience. Maybe to much video gaming, sitting in front of a computer and tv, instead of experiencing the realities of the real world. This is a subject I am just beginning to learn about, as all of my focus had been directed as anger at the Federal Government’s failings. I have, until recently, neglected educating myself on my state’s Constitution. The State and Local level is where almost all government power should reside and I found myself severely lacking in knowledge about its machinations. Get to know your local politicians, that is where your power lies. You may vote for president but your elector might have a different idea. Every county in every state is in your hands. This upcoming election is about the real power in Washington. No president even obama has the power to make real change without those state elections going his way. His power comes from his party winning seats and that result is handed to him or denied him by we the people. The battle is on, get to know who your representatives and senators are and G.R.I.P. Posted on September 28, 2010 at 10:16pmYes. The State Government is where much of the “control” on the free market is, especially in health care. Midwives, both nurse midwives and certified professional midwives, have difficulty working in many states due to restrictive state laws. There is no free market in health care and therefore fewer choices for consumers and higher prices. Many nurses, nurse practitioners and nurse-midwives have been behind a national health care system because it was a way to be able to practice and get paid. This is also true of education in many states where laws and regulations may really reduce the free market in education. We must free the markets at both federal and state level.

I appreciate your sentiment and I do agree that you cannot effectively educate children without getting the parents involved. I do however disagree with the reward system. It is the PARENTS job TO BE involved in THEIR child’s education. The “reward” you receive is a functioning member of society and not a drain, if you do your job right. Your “reward” is the child itself and watching them grow and become adults.
The Department of Education has successfully made parents feel that they need not have any part in educating their child. The truth is that we as parents ARE the child’s primary educator. When this fails and parents depend on a bloated unionized system to teach their child, then most children have no hope of succeeding. There are some children that just persevere but they are not the norm.
I would like to see a day when parents do not allow the government to tell them that they are too stupid to be a part of their child’s education. To not leave this most important job to “big brother” because they tell us they know best or because they have all the professors.

Posted on October 1, 2010 at 4:17amSo reward a teacher and pay them more with tenure. What exactly does tenure mean these days. It doesn’t make any sense to me. I know of a high school teacher who threatend to poke a highschool students eyes out with sharpend pencil, threatend to brake another students wrist and my son came home numerous times complaining if he had to hear her voice one more time he would go crazy, and said she told the students she did not care about them numerous times. I complained to the superintendent to no avail, his response was I could not make a complaint unless my son engaged in a meeting with both her and made the complaint in front of him, however, he could not take him out of her class until it was fully investigated in which he had to keep attending? Even though I told him I was afraid for him? He then had extensive summer school class and I made sure it wasn’t with her. He went for a few days and to my surprise he came home and said they moved him to her extensive summer class. I was outraged, especially thinking that when I dropped him off at the school site only to find a week later he was ditching her class and failed english again. He said he couldn’t stand to hear her voice because all she did was scream and complain about personal matters. He then told me the state came into observe her classroom and all the kids thought it was funny because she bribed them with donuts if they were good. Shortly after I had to bring my husband in uniform with me to his IEP… I demanded they take him out of her class once again! And they did. Things turned sideways in a bad bad way a week later, he started cutting class and ended up in in home hospital. Soon a charter school, back at the same school again and eventually moved him to another high school due to his fear of the school. Low and behold, I registered him in this new school, with another IEP making a transitional plan and the counsler read to my son and I all the teachers he would have. To my surprise, she was now at his new school and they wanted to put him in her class once again. I said hell no,. But could I make a complaint before the uninvitable happend… no, it would of made things worse once again, so I thought. My son was a victim being blamed! . My question is, did the new school not read my complaint at the initial IEP and they weren’t thourough enough while looking out for his best interest and making a plan for him,,,, or did the previous school fail to put it in his IEP. Anyways, was sure she would get a pink slip when they were handing them out, to my surprise, she never did.

Report Post »Some form of communism has been around forever. It doesn’t matter if something has been around since the birth of man; if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it is most likely a duck. http://www.kipling.org.uk/poems_copybook.htm just an enjoyable poem

Posted on September 29, 2010 at 4:15amTenure has a free speech role to play at the University level where both the Professors and Students are adults and thus old enough to employ critical thinking to what is presented to them. At the K-12 levels, where the students are minors, tenure is counter productive as it forces the children to be exposed to ideas that are highly offensive to the dignity of man (such as Union/Progressiv/Social/Commun-ism).
The K-12 Levels are also highly objective in the way that success is defined. There are a simple series of skills that need to be learned at different levels along the way. No middle school teacher needs to be discussing any controversial issues with the children that would need free speech protection because while they are minors.
We the Parents via School Boards decide what they should be taught and when. School Tax Districts are set up by the Parents to fund their schools making both the administrators and teachers OUR employees and thus they are subject to OUR view of what should be taught.

Posted on September 29, 2010 at 1:02pmV Forge, WADR, you seemed to missed the fact that Kings were NOT elected but had absolute power. Even with tenure, the KING could rid himself of those who opposed him. Death at times: banisnment more likely. It allowed for the concept of free speach to emerge to reality. In a fully elective system that had proven justice system, tenure probably would NOT be needed.
Communism started with Hegal and Karl Marx in the mid 1800s. IF you’re trying to make the point that it is Luciferian inspired and thus goes back even to Adam and Eve, I would agree with you.
But words/titles have meanings and are necessary to allow all to talk on the same page.
As to tenure, some private colleges do NOT give it but do increase the length of the contract as a Professor proves his/her worth. BYU is on University that does that.
Lastly, I would urge you to closely follow Ellie’s post. she is very informed.

We’re talking about tenure in an educational envronment, NOT a land holding environment. I was well aware of what tenure was in land dealings. To ave a fruitful and educational dialogue, we all must focus on the context and NOT get off on to side matters.

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 10:00pmI think he should hire consultant, John Taylor Gatto author of “A Different Kind of Teacher – Solving the crisis of American Schooling”. This guy exposed the schools when it wasn’t socially acceptable yet. Everyone should read up on this guy. A true American and former New York City school teacher who went against the grain. It’s going to be hard to fix something that has so many problems and you need a real expert who thinks outside the box and knows the hidden government agenda.

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 11:06pmLulz… America is being destroyed by communists and all idiots like GBIAD can do is attack the latest target of the left on things that are completely irrelevant.
PROTIP: Radical political and social philosophies affect your life. What someone said about mice in 2007 does not. Notice how we attack Obama-and-friends on policy, not the idiotic things they say on the side? And there are PLENTY to choose from if we really wanted to go there.
This is going to be one hell of an easy win. Talk about grasping at straws! The tactics never change, and as a result even the left is starting to recognize and grow weary of them.
You keep it up, GBIAD. You’re helping us more than you could ever know. From the bottom of my heart… thank you. Thank you so much.

They do not have the ability to carry on meaningful conversation however, and only become defensive when questioned about off-topic comments. With no functioning brain cells, they must rely on Democrats and left wing media to spoon feed them all information.”

Gee… I wonder where Christine O‘Donnell might have gotten that idea?
Dateline: 26 February 2001 – 6 years before her statement.
“Irving Weissman of Stanford University, who carried out the experiment with colleagues from the Salk Institute and StemCells, a California biotechnology company, is thinking of taking the research further into unknown and controversial territory. He can see a way to produce mice in which almost all the brain cells (neurones) are human.” – http://ngin.tripod.com/279.htm
But wait, there’s more…
Dateline: 17 February 2005 – 2 years prior to her statement
“Stanford University has given famed researcher Irving Weissman permission to create a mouse-human hybrid. The intent is to inject human brain cells into the brains of developing mice to see what happens.
Professor Henry T. Greely, director of the Center for Law and the Biosciences and leader of the committee that considered the proposal, told the San Jose Mercury News, “We concluded that if we see any signs of human brain structures . . . or if the mouse shows human-like behaviors, like improved memory or problem-solving, it’s time to stop.” – http://www.livescience.com/technology/technovel_mouse_050217.html
Dr. Weissman is still a fellow at Salk: http://www.salk.edu/faculty/nonresident_fellows.html
Granted the process is a bit more complicated then “cross-breeding” but perhaps we should ask Dr. Weissman about the accuracy of Christine O‘Donnell depiction of his research:
