Ed Schultz & Al Sharpton Have Tense Exchange With Gov. Walker Over Auto Bailout: ‘Let Me Finish!’

Scott Walker Faces Off With MSNBCs Maddow, Schultz Over Auto BailoutStay up-to-date on all the convention news by visiting TheBlaze’s dedicated RNC page. Also find out how you can watch exclusive, live reports and analysis on TheBlaze TV here.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has become known for taking bold stances on a variety of issues. While his treatment of the unions has come under scrutiny by Democrats, on Wednesday night, the politician tackled a very different issue — the now infamous auto bailout. In an on-air scuffle with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Ed Schultz and Al Sharpton, Walker made his stance against the government’s role in the scenario known.

The back-and-forth started when Maddow asked if Walker thought the bailout was ineffective. He responded in the affirmative and emphasized his view that the private sector, not government, offers the best hope for viable sales and growth.

“It wasn’t in Wisconsin,” the governor said of the bailout’s success. “What we need is true prosperity and that comes really more effectively through the private sector.”

Maddow, of course, challenged this assertion, claiming that she was “surprised” to hear Walker would “run down the American auto industry at a moment when it really has come back.” The MSNBC host said that Walker‘s talk about the ineffectiveness of the auto bailout made it seem as though the situation hasn’t worked out — a notion she flatly rejects.

Walker, though, was ready with a response, this time getting even deeper into what he believes should have been done to help reinvigorate auto sales.

“It could have come back more effectively and sooner had they taken the advice of Mitt Romney early on and done a managed bankruptcy instead of spending all those dollars of taxpayers’ money that otherwise could have been done more effectively in the private sector early on,” he said, doubling down on his stance, while also slipping in a tidbit of Romney support.

The back-and-forth didn’t end there, though. Maddow’s criticisms were joined by clamoring from Schultz and Sharpton, who also seemed to believe that a managed bankruptcy wouldn’t have been as effective. That led to some raised voices and a tense back-and-forth that forced walker to interject, “Let me finish!”

I do remember that structured bailout with Iaccoca at the helm. Practically all Government motor pools were made up of four cylinder “K” cars for as far as the eye could see. Our Army TMPs (Transportation Motor Pools, nontactical vehicle) for close to a decade received only K cars as new vehicles other than specialty vehicles such as trucks. Chrysler was reduced to building only front wheel drive cars for just over a decade, and the only V8s built went into trucks. Okay, that being said, Iaccoca did have them build a simpler, smaller vehicle that did get better mileage during that time. And, Chrysler did pull themselves up by the boot straps, and paid back every penny along with the interest to the government.
Today’s auto bailout, and 0bama meddling helped the unions more than anything else.

“Didn’t cost tax payers billions”? That depends upon how you look at it. Iacocca brought Chrysler back form the brink by making and selling absolute pieces of crap cars to the public.

I was a mechanic at that time and never have I seen such a poor product line. The cars were basically disposable and started falling apart after 30k mile. I was in awe as I saw parts fail that should never fail. It must have taken a lot of work to find such inferior materials just to produce these cars (really I don’t know how they did it).

On top of that they would do things like put a 4cyl engine in a sedan which made the sedan price more attractive but back then there weren’t any 4cyl engines that had the power to accommodate a sedan.

Iacocca gets a lot of accolades for saving Chrysler but people don’t realize he did it by dumping completely inferior products onto the public.

Obviously, you don’t remember it as Reagan provided Federal government loan guarantees and was featured in commercials to buy American. Regan actually promoted buy American in support of the industry and the turnaround rather than cheer against it for political gain. The federal, states and local governments also purchase a bunch of K cars, which were pieces of crap. So the taxpayer would have been totally on the hook if Chrysler had failed. And of course a managed bankruptcy under the Bain Capital model would have meant a handful of investors would have syphoned off $100′s of millions, the pension plan would have been raped, the suppliers and creditors stiffed and most likely more manufacturing moved offshore. Perhaps aggressive capitalism, but not an investment in the country.

JCROOK, What in Sam Hill are you banging your gums about now? Nothing you just said makes any sense. Here is a chance for you to explain yourself in detail. Now, why would Reagan not promote that the American public buy American? Are you saying that he should promote that America should buy foreign, and ignore Chrylser’s predicament so that they could not repay the government? Besides, it was the Carter Administration that got the ball rolling for the massive loan in 1979.

Walker’s statement while sounding good is of course totally conjecture as he has no basis to assume a managed bankruptcy would have worked better. Why is it that companies and conservatives rail against bankruptcy laws when they are used by individuals to regroup, but promote them when Executives and investment bankers use them to turn a quick buck at the expense of primary investors, the workers, pension plans and of course the country. As the track record of Bain Capital shows, the private sector would have only come in if they could make a quick and undeserved high ROI. At no point would their concern have been for the overall economy or the impact on the people involved or the country. I await good examples of a Bain type bankruptcy where the primary investors, creditors, suppliers, workers, etc. made out as well as the Bain folks. Let’s not confuse investors who seek to make an honest, reasonable return while strengthening the US with vulture capitalists who are the clear antithesis. You actually support a guy who has utilized offshore accounts and every shady technique to avoid paying taxes and somehow magically has $100 million in an IRA. You want to vote against the PRESIDENT fine, but stop pretending Romney is anything other than what he is, and that is not a man of character, integrity, honesty or even a minimal sense of citizenship.

I worked at Chrysler in the Finance area during the “bailout”. Most people don’t know that the government guaranteed loans to Chrysler and in return received warrants that were subsequently exercised and the goverment made millions without putting our a dime of federal taxpayer money. This is quite different from what Obama did with GM.

“Fact: While Ryan tried to pin the downgrade of the United States’ credit rating on spending under President Obama, the credit rating was actually downgraded because Republicans threatened not to raise the debt ceiling”

Really? Oh yea, creditors always downgrade you because you didn’t take out another credit card to pay for the debt on your first credit card.

      Good grief.

GM is not making a comeback either. They have not paid back the loans. Also, Obama ILLEGALLY screwed over the bond holders of Chrysler and gave the majority bonds to the UNIONS.

Hmm, Obama’s bailout of GM was so wonderful….really???!!! Let’s see, the UAW got 100 cents on the dollar. Delphi employees got about 30 cents on the dollar. Investors, small and large, who held stock, bonds, shares, etc got ZERO cents on the dollars. Further the bailout was structured so that the investors could not either as individuals or a class action group bring suit against either GM or the government to recoup any of their investment. To add further insult to injury, the investors have to pay taxes which go to repay the loan from China. Sounds like a good deal to me, NOT!

The plant closed in April 2009. Obama promised it wouldn’t. Broken promise number 297. As for the credit downgrade, she’s full of it again. The downgrade happened because U.S. spending and debt are out of control. In my opinion the downgrade would have been worse if the Republicans didn’t show a little spine and start talking about fixing the problem. Democrats are delusional liars that bend facts to suit their own perception of the world, which is colored by socialist red. Grow up! Fox is going in the wrong direction. What we have to decide first is between Sharpton, Maddow, and Schultz, who was Moe, Larry and Curly?
When will the liberal media admit that Obama did loan the money to GM and Chrysler but not to benefit either corporation or their employees. He made a deal with the UAW since if either company went through a controlled bankruptcy, UAW would have lost 26 billions dollars owed to them by GM alone in arrears and GM wouldn‘t have had to pay UAW that money if bankrupt and Obama wouldn’t have been able to skim his re election campaign money from the top of that owed money, and we the taxpayers wouldn’t still be waiting for that loan to be repayed. GM shares are down to around $20 per share but when Obama loaned them our money they were going for over $35 a share so We The People will never get that money back, it was another hit on our economy by the Obama administration, but Obama profited from it, but Moe, Larry and Curly didn’t bother to bring that up or the fact that GM will soon be filing for bankrupcty again since Obama is running the car company and appointed a puppet CEO for show.
Ford told Obama to shove the money where Larry Sinclair was back in 1999 or at least a part of Larry Sinclair’s anatomy was.
Ford is making profits and are content being the number 2 auto company in sales but number 1 in profits. Ford is not putting large rebates on their vehicles like GM, Ford is putting quality, style and innovation into their vehicles and still selling well.

@MYPTOFVU, I could tell that you were a mechanic back in the days of Iacocca’s reign at Chrysler, he was making shoddy K cars and every vehicle except for the trucks and police vehicles were all based on minivan chassis and all had the worse machined engines I have ever seen, the Chrysler built 4 cylinders were even more trashy then the optional 4 cylinders made by Mitsubishi if that was even possible. Iacocca did the same thing at Chrysler that he got fired for at Ford, he built disposable cars. Pure trash K cars with minivan sheetmetal on them. Cheapened the torque flight transmissions that were once one of the best transmissions ever made.
At Ford, he couldn’t even be in the presence of Henry II without making Henry sick to the stomach. He took credit as the father of the Mustang when all he did was what he did best, put new sheet metal on a cheaper vehicle and it was the stylists that created the Mustang not Iacocca. To his credit he did create two all new vehicles, he designed and engineered both vehicles the Pinto and the Mustang II, which was a Pinto with new sheet metal on it. Warned by Ford Engineers of the faulty gas tanks, he ignored them since there was so little profit in the Pinto his slogan 2000 for $2012 didn’t work and it cost Ford millions in law suits, and that is when Henry II fired Iacocca. Caldwell replaced Iacocca and quality returned to Ford and Chrysler got stuck with shoddy vehicles. He brought them out of bankruptcy but as what cost?

How could Walker‘s statements be conjecture when he explained Romney’s idea’s of a controlled bankruptcy while Obama never held a job outside of the government, and we all know how well the government does when it comes to money, it is a non profit agency that spends money taken from taxpayers.
Obama’s loans to GM and Chrysler was not to save either corporation it was to make sure that the UAW got the money GM alone owed them which was $26 billion in arrears, and you know as well as any of us that Obama skimmed his cut from the UAW off the top to fill his re election coffers as well as getting his cut from Solyndra and several other failed “Green” companies, knowing in advance that all of these companies were going to go bankrupt and leave us the taxpayers holding the empty bag.
If by some miracle Obama gets re elected, approach him with a “Green” idea just tell him you invented reusable toilet paper and it will keep the environment cleaner and you too could get a government loan as long as you are willing to give Obama a piece of the action, and you could get off of welfare and be a self made milionaire.

Your wrong! They didn’t lie. They said that Barack came to town during the election and said that this plant would remain open. People voted for him because of the LIES that he told. Obama had NO intentions on saving that plant or he would have. Instead Obama CANCELED the dealerships that didn’t contribute to his campaign, fired the CEO of GM , put his own guy in charge of GM so he could control it, Gave 40 percent of GM to the UAW union so he could repay them for their votes and support, created CASH for CLUNKERS that took good decent cars off the road so they could sell more crap like Chrysler did , and in the process made America weaker and more reliant on foreign countries. It’s time the American people pay Obama back for screwing us over and fire him!

Most of them are more interested in their pay and pension than they are teaching our kids.

Do liberals even love their kids? They let these kind of people teach their kids, and that concerns me why they want their kids to be dumbed-down by these kind of teachers. Why do libs want the country to fail and leave all the costs to our children? I always thought our children came first.

Not a single one of them has run a company or payroll or has a clue what a huge company needs. Doesn’t stop them from running their mouths though. This never was about saving GM, it was about a government getting their foot in the door to give ownership to their union buddies. We will never recover all the money they owe the US, they just keep playing shell games. Oh, too bad about the volt, not. GM tried electric cars in the 90′s, they didn’t sell then either.

Arrogance and disrespect are trademarks of the left. They bash anybody they hate! They are experts of villifying and demeaning anyone they disagree with. However, Americans are catching on to their tactics. The majority of the American public are now seeing through this and disregarding all the vitriol these clowns spout.

The bailout of GM was a disaster for everybody who was a bondholder or stockholder in the original company. The company is still a complete disaster. GOVERNMENT MOTORS was forced to make the VOLT, one of the most disasterous programs in automotive history (Rivaling Ford’s Edsel). Now Government Motors is suspending production of this disaster.

The only reason that GM can show any real sales is that the administration is forcing its agencys to purchase only GOVERNMENT MOTORS cars using more of our taxpayer money to subsidize this failing travesty of a company. FROM NOW ON, I WILL BUY ONLY FORDS!!!

So when did the plant close? MSNBC says the Washington Post has it closing in December of 2008 and some other newspaper has it closing in April of 2009. I do get that Obama said it would remain open but if it did close in 2008, there was nothing he could have done. Heck, even if the plant closed in April of 2009, can we really blame a guy who had been in office for 3 or 4 months just because he said the plant would remain open?

Spare me your accusations of being a troll or a liberal. Read my posts. I’m conservative. I just think this was stupid for Republicans to bring up and frankly, I feel it makes them look as silly.

zorro – it was just an example of the many, many GM dealers that did close, whether before or after 2009. That happened to be the one Obama stood in front of and said it would remain open for 100 years. There was a dealership in my town that did close because of Obama. Most dealerships were owned by Republicans. Bankrupcty would have been better for the company and certainly for the stock holders that were truly screwed.

I realize it was used because Obama gave a speech there and it happens to be where Paul Ryan is from. But the story has just enough holes to distract from the real issue. If they had used the plant or dealership from your town, the left would have nothing. Instead, Paul Ryan gave them just enough to make the party look stupid.

Zorro, the timeline matters lttle when you look at the point of Pres. Obama (ok maybe not pres. yet) standing at that factory and stating that it would be open for 100 years because of the bailout. HE SAID IT, he had every power to make that happen. If he could not make it happen, then he should have never said it! Which is the bigger point that this man, as well as many other politicians, say things they can never, ever get done, but Pres. Oduma is exemplary at saying what he will do and then not making it happen.
Once the bailout occured, the CAR CZAR could have forced GM to re-open the plant to keep Pres. Oduma’s word..but no, they must have forgotten……but we have not!!!

In that 3 or 4 months that you want to apologize for, billions of dollars went out in stimulus to companies all over the country. All it takes to keep a factory like Janesville running is cash…..the problem is that the President made so many stupid promises in his bid to get elected, that he apparently could not keep track of them all. Let’s call it “read my lips” syndrome. Making promises you don’t need to in order to assure victory. He PROMISED it would not close. They send out on the RNC floor the guy with the shaved head (nobody knows) with a microphone that is blank (no MSNBC logo) and then like a spider hanging in a web waiting (Shultz, Maddow, Matthews,Sharpton) the “prey” (Walker, Condi Rice, Jan Brewer) go to talk to the “nice guy” with the mic and WHAM the spiders attack with “birther” or “dog whistle” or any other Obama talking point (spiders attack the prey) – they’re looking to capture any “sound bite” they can. My Mom and Dad both worked over 35 year for GM, they always said the union heads and shop stewards were more worried about keeping their positions and perks like black lake, than worrying about the rank and file worker. I remember in 1980 my parents were worried their plant was going to close and the union heads were telling the workers that gm had 2 sets of books, 1 they showed the union and one that is the real one, the real one showed gm was making tons of money the other that showed the union they were losing money. i was only a kid but knew that is illegal and that the union heads were lying and didnt care about the health of GM or job security thru compromise for the workers. Oh and by the way Micheal Morons movie “Roger and me” was bs. that plant in flint was riddled with corruption and drugs. When they close that plant they moved a lot of workers to my parents plant, about 8 months later the FBI raided the plant and most of the people they arrested were from that flint plant

What’s wrong with having a pension?
      ———————————————————–
Nothing if I can have what they have. President Obama has set the course for divisive class warfare. I want what the auto workers get. Heck the Delphi workers who’s pension was destroyed by president Obama want what the auto workers get. I need you (Cassandra) to work twice as hard to provide for me.

      @ Marybethelizabeth
There is nothing wrong with having a pension, as long as it’s fully funded, and sadly many pension plans weren’t designed to have employees earning a pension for 20 and 30 years after they retire at an early age.

During this bailout there were many employees who were screwed out of their pension because they weren’t union employees.

This bailout was a sham to get unions to give democrats more political money. Any economist worth a grain of salt could see that just giving the companies more money and giving it to the unions, wasn’t going to fix the problem inherent in the auto industry-many being paid much more than they should as the products weren‘t making money and people don’t want to buy an inferior product.

Unions may have had a place in the workplace at one time. Now as a former teacher, I see them keeping people who really should be out of a job employed. Unions are now a way to try and get useful idiots ready for a communist revolution.

      Mary, mary quite contrary,
There is nothing wrong with having a pension, as long as, the pension isn’t paid for by the general public through the tax system. I should not have to pay for GM to survive, nor should I pay for an industry that is so bloated in its pension area. Private companies have every right to bargain with labor unions, and vice versa, but I should not have to support their pensions with my tax money. The federal govt overstepped their bounds when they installed the bailouts. Live for no man, and let no man live for you! Have some personal responsibility and your company won’t go bankrupt, GM should have been restructured like Ford, and the govt wouldn‘t have spent billions on a horse that couldn’t race.

Mary, The unions are no good for the AMERICAN people as a whole just a few. The union cost add about 1000.00 to the cost of a car. Please tell me when will the AMERICAN people get paid back?

Why doesn‘t Obama every step into the lion’s den Gov. Walker just did. Everyone in his party keeps claiming he’s the smartest man in the room…..But then he never proves it. He77 he has to have an approved format to even appear on one of his hardcore supporters show.

Because to do so would take great courage and conviction. That is something Obama and most democrats will never have!!

Got a tip from another post. Go to “ghostery” and download it. Go into “options” and then “advanced” set the alert bubble to 1 or 0 seconds. This has really helped on many other sites also.
