Government Forces Clash Violently with Iranian Protesters

Tens of thousands of democracy activists took to the streets of Tehran today chanting “death to the Dictator” and calling for an end to their Ayatollah-led “religious dictatorship.” Their chants were met with the brutal violence of Basij militiamen and anti-riot police who used steel batons, fired bullets, and dropped tear gas on the crowd. “This was the most violent protest we’ve had by far, and people were also really angry and fearless,” one witness in Tehran said.
According to the Telegraph, Tehran’s city center is under lock-down.
“Freedom is near, join us in the streets,” a protester defiantly wrote on the Facebook page created for today’s protests.
The WSJ reports:
Witnesses said mobs of anti-riot police and plainclothes Basij militia lined the streets and on several occasions fired directly into the crowd and beat protesters with steel batons. In one neighborhood, the Basij took over a commercial building and dropped tear gas canisters from the roof onto the protesters, witnesses said.
Basij militia dressed in black shot and killed two young men in Tehran’s Vanak and Vali Asr squares, according to witness accounts posted on opposition websites. The victims haven’t been identified. Dozens have been injured and arrested, according to witnesses.
“This was the most violent protest we’ve had by far, and people were also really angry and fearless,” said one witness from Tehran, adding that the public seemed resolved to stay on the street.
Opposition called for a mass demonstration on Sunday to commemorate the seventh day of mourning for two slain students, Sanah Jaleh, 26 years old, and Mohamad Mokhtari, 22, who were shot dead on Monday when security forces attacked a crowd.
The opposition movement is banking on momentum created by a wave of antigovernment uprisings across the Middle East, as well as public uproar at the killing of the two students and the government’s attempt to exploit their deaths by claiming falsely they supported the regime.
“Freedom is near, join us in the streets,” said one posting on the Facebook group created for Sunday’s demonstrations.
“Step outside your door, every street is Freedom Square,” said another.
In Tehran, protesters targeted government buildings such as the national broadcast company Seda va Sima—seen as a mouthpiece for the regime— chanting “God is great” and “Death to the dictator,” witnesses reported on opposition websites.
Like the Libyan protesters, those in Iran gathered today to mourn two Iranian activists slain by government forces earlier this week.

Posted on February 20, 2011 at 5:40pmOne of the best indicators determining intellect is the ability to admit when your wrong. Can the liberals step up and be counted among the intellectual community? For weeks now they have savaged Glenn Beck for showing how the unrest in the middle east could spread. Even laying out graphically the areas that could be effected. Are you now prepared to admit he was right and you were wrong? Or won’t the length of your intellectual legs allow you to reach that high?

They better get serious and drag those guys off the bikes and kill them. nobody is going to fight this one for them or with them. This is not a disagreement people it’s a battle against slave masters. The masters live high on the (non pork) Hog while the little people get none of the petrodollars or benefits of having an oil rich nation. They use weapons, killing and Religion to stay on top but it’s still just another version of master and slave.

Posted on February 20, 2011 at 7:39pmWhile the bloodshed in Iran is a terrible sight to behold (some of the news sites I visited have VERY graphic videos and pictures), it will ultimately turn out better for Iran if the people throw off the yoke of dictatorship themselves. If we help them their revolution will just seem like foreign meddling, the USA throwing its weight into the middle east to destabilize another region. This way it will look like the people winning their own freedom and a blank slate from which to start again.

Posted on February 20, 2011 at 5:04pmI hope they win too. I think we are starting to see the rising of the normal Islamic people against the extreme. The extreme are in control and it should not surprise us to see them be brutal even with their own citzens. After all they are the ones who supported the 9/11 attacks and suicide bombers and the such. I hope that these protesters do topple the goverment. It might start something good in the world. Undercover Maryland state troopers infiltrated three groups advocating peace and protesting the death penalty — attending meetings and sending reports on their activities to U.S. intelligence and military agencies, according to documents released Thursday.
The documents show the activities occurred from at least March 2005 to May 2006 and that officers used false names, which the documents referred to as “covert identities” – to open e-mail accounts to receive messages from the groups.
Also included in the 46 pages of documents, obtained by the Maryland chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, is an account of an activist’s name being entered into a federally funded database designed to share information among state, local and federal law-enforcement agencies on terrorist and drug trafficking suspects.
ACLU attorney David Rocah said state police violated federal laws prohibiting departments that receive federal funds from maintaining databases with information about political activities and affiliations.
The activist was identified as Max Obuszewski. His “primary crime” was entered into the database as “terrorism – anti govern(ment).” His “secondary crime” was listed as “terrorism – anti-war protestors.” The database is known as the Washington-Baltimore High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, or HIDTA.
“This is not supposed to happen in America,” said Mr. Rocah. “In a free society, which relies on the engagement of citizens in debate and protest and political activity to maintain that freedom … you should be able to attend a meeting about an issue you care about without having to worry that government spies are entering your name into a database used to track alleged terrorists and drug traffickers.”
Mr. Rocah called the surveillance “Kafka-esque insanity.”
State police Chief Col. Terrence B. Sheridan said the agency “does not inappropriately curtail the expression or demonstration of the civil liberties of protesters or organizations acting lawfully.”
The surveillance of Mr. Obuszewski, of Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore, and another person came to light during his trial for trespassing and disorderly conduct in a 2004 protest outside the National Security Agency’s headquarters in Fort Meade, Md.
