Tater Nots: Gov’t Eyes School Lunch Potato Ban

GLEED, Wash. (AP) — Potato growers are fighting back against efforts to ban or limit potatoes in federal child nutrition programs, arguing the tuber is loaded with potassium and vitamin C and shouldn’t be considered junk food.
One Washington man is so exasperated by the proposals that he’s in the midst of a 60-day, all potato diet to demonstrate that potatoes are nutritious.
“We‘re just really concerned that this is a misconception to the public that potatoes aren’t healthy,” said Chris Voigt, head of the Washington Potato Commission. “The potato isn’t the scourge of the earth. It’s nutrition.”
Healthy food advocates said they’re not anti-potato, but they think children need a greater variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains to fight a tripling of child obesity rates in the past 30 years.
“The potato is the most common vegetable,” said Diane Pratt-Heavner, spokeswoman for the School Nutrition Association. “My impression is that the goal is to increase the amounts of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. I don’t believe anyone is specifically attacking the potato.”
With that in mind, the Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, recommended that the U.S. Department of Agriculture stop participants of the federal Women, Infants and Children program, known as WIC, from buying potatoes with federal dollars. The institute also called for the USDA-backed school lunch program to limit use of potatoes.
Under an interim rule, the USDA agreed to bar WIC participants from buying potatoes with their federal dollars. Potatoes are the only vegetable not allowed. Next year, the agency will roll out a final rule on the WIC program, which last year served 9.3 million children and pregnant and breast-feeding women considered at risk for malnutrition.
The WIC program is a supplemental food program, and the determination was made that consumption of white potatoes was already adequate, said Christine Stencel, spokeswoman for the Institute of Medicine.
“The recommendation was made to encourage consumption of other fruits and vegetables,” she said.
Jean Daniel, spokeswoman for USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, said the WIC program was updated for the first time in 30 years after a study showed more consumption of leafy greens and other veggies was needed.
The USDA is expected to release changes to the federal school lunch program by the end of the year. The program subsidizes lunch and breakfast for nearly 32 million needy kids in most public schools and many private ones, and those schools must follow guidelines on what they serve.
Whatever the USDA decides, potatoes won’t disappear from school lunches, although they might become less common, Daniel said,
“It’s an opportunity to make healthy eating choices as varied as possible, and it‘s a learning lesson for children about how to put a plate together that’s healthy and balanced,” she said.
At Naches Valley Primary School, which sits in the agricultural hub of central Washington, some 7-year-old students weren’t so sure.
“No potatoes?” second-grader Madison Nunley asked incredulously.
“That would be bad.” Chimed in schoolmate Leah Marko, “That would be so not cool. I love tater tots.”
The Institute of Medicine made its school lunch recommendation late last year after determining that standards for the federal lunch program don‘t match up with the government’s own dietary guidelines, calling for lots of fresh fruits and veggies and more whole grains.
This hardly marks the first time that potato growers have felt targeted. Low-carb diets, such as Atkins and South Beach, prompted the U.S. Potato Board to allocate $4.4 million for an 18-month public relations campaign in 2004 to stress the nutrition factor in potatoes.
Growers note that potatoes have more potassium than bananas, and that one serving provides roughly 45 percent of the daily recommended value for vitamin C. They also offer some fiber and other minerals and vitamins.
However, they also are high in carbohydrates — and calories, depending on how they are cooked — which can be a losing combination for couch potatoes.
Voight said he’ll add spices and a bit of cooking oil to his 20-potatoes-per-day diet, but he won’t heap on any butter, sour cream, cheese or any other tasty tidbits.
He acknowledged his all-potato diet was a publicity stunt, but he said only wants to promote the nutritional value of the spud.
“It‘s not like we’re going to increase sales,” he said.
Frank Muir, president and CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission, said it’s wrong to single out potatoes.
“You don’t have to eliminate any food. You just eat everything in proper balance, a variety of colors and focus on fruits and vegetables,” said Muir, whose state leads the nation in potato production. “Obviously, I think potatoes should be the foundation vegetable.”
But Muir isn’t lining up just yet to join Voigt.
“If I didn’t like chocolate chip cookies, I’d probably give it a shot,” he said.

Posted on October 20, 2010 at 8:25amPotatoes are a legitimate part of a healthy diet. They don’t have to be fried. They can be baked or boiled or roasted. The problem is that most kids don’t like them that way. What the government doesn’t get (I tuaght and had cafeteria duty for 30 years) is that no matter what the cafeteria serves, if the kids don’t like it, they won’t eat it – even if they are hungry. In fact, they just bring what they want from home(yes, even those on free lunch. Mom and dad find the money when junior complains) or mom or dad brings fast food to lunch for them(you shuld have seen the line waiting for kids to come to lunch to give them their bag of fast food.) The district where I taught really pushed healthy lunches. Few kids touched the salads and, since they could only have fruit for dessert, they brought their own cookies and candy from home. I’ll never forget when suddenly they started being served trail mix with a large helping of prunes mixed in. Not ONE child I saw ate it. Every time it was served the trash can was filled with trail mix.

So their answer to more variety is to take one of the choices away? That’s quite a leap in logic.

Posted on October 20, 2010 at 8:04amI hope that when the evil Republicans take over that the school lunch program is the first thing to go. The children can pack a sandwich and a fruit drink in a brown paper bag or lunch box. We had to! Does anyone remember lunch boxes?
And about child obesity. It is not about what the children eat. I hated cereal. I went through childhood with a steady diet of cookies, cake, pie, and three bottles of soda per day. I did not get fat because I ran and played. Plus, I was always mischievous so I had to be able run to run faster than some Joe that I nailed his car with a snowball. I don’t think parents think it is safe to let their children play outside at night.

Posted on October 20, 2010 at 8:49amIt isn’t safe to let them play outside anymore, at any time without supervision. Fifteen year olds are getting grabbed and thrown into cars, the littler ones are getting grabbed right out of their front yards and don’t have much of a chance to fight off abductors. That being said, your point is well taken. We didn’t much respect the food pyramid either, when we were kids, but we were out on bikes and playing games and swimming, you get the picture. There has to be a compromise between keeping kids safe from their would-be abusers and getting them active and moving.

Posted on October 20, 2010 at 7:47amThey want to limit potatoes what about all the cookies, sugar enhanced cereal. Potatoes are a good starch if cooked correctly meaning not fried in grease. Enough already we all know what is good for us, salads and fruits. Have you seen the price of them lately and that is going up each day. Who can afford to eat 5 helpings daily of fruits and veggies.
Report Post »SummerB
Posted on October 20, 2010 at 8:32amThe only thing that can be negatively said about a potato is it’s high glycemic value, but if you eat only 1 serving a day & combine it with another food of high fiber value, then, there isn’t any problem with eating potatoes. Over the generations there are many peoples who’ve had to eat uncooked potatoes for sustenance, so I say, “Thank God for the potato!” No, I’m not one of those who will ever be thanking the Earth for the potato.
Yes, I’ve seen the price of food lately. The prices have been steadily increasing & are still going up. Very rarely can find any fruits for 99-cents/lb. anymore, rather $1.79 or $1.99/lb. 2 years ago iceburg lettuce used to be 99-cents/head, now it’s $1.99 – 2.49/head & it’s predominantly all water & has no nutritional value. I know all the voluminous foods that should be eaten to provide a healthy diet, but who the heck can afford to eat healthfully. I’d love to be able to buy organic fruits & veggies, but I can’t even afford to buy the daily required servings of the pesticide-treated stuff. With the continuing devaluation of the dollar, the loss of 30% of our domestic food production because of the water being turned off in the San Wakeen Valley & natural occurring weather events, is it any wonder that many people HAVE to eat at fast food restaurants & buy all the cr#p packaged items like mac ‘n cheese for a buck a clip.
Report Post »subflavus
Posted on October 20, 2010 at 8:42amExactly, but that’s all part of the grand plan. After banning affordable foods, the “progessives” will implement price ceilings, which will run more private companies out of business. It’s all very predictable.
Report Post »Rowgue
Posted on October 20, 2010 at 11:20amThis is the truth and it‘s the real problem with why so many people don’t eat healthy. The obesity problem is overstated using pseudo science and ever moving thresholds, but people are eating less healthy.
It used to be that shopping for your own groceries and preparing your own meals was the most affordable food option. Now the price of fruits and vegetables and unprepared foods has gone through the roof. The fast food industry has responded to the poor economy. They have kept their prices static or even lowered them. That makes them not only the most convenient meal option for a lot of people now but also the most affordable. Somebody can go get a decent meal for two dollars with the fast food chains all having their dollar menus now. And when I say decent I mean it satisfies a hunger not that it’s a healthy meal. There is no way you are getting the same satisfaction of hunger at the same price buying groceries and preparing your own meals. It just isn’t happening.

Posted on October 20, 2010 at 9:40amAs far as this Ulsterman informant — I never trust anyone who answers questions with “I believe.” Either ones knows or doesn’t know & “I believe” means one doesn’t know.
Yes, the President is surely under a lot of stress, & with his inflated ego (most politicians have inflated egos so no surprise here) & genuine passion for what he thinks is right for America (albiet misguided) that he is also very angry & depressed that most of his Transformation of America Agenda will probably not (thankfully for us) be realized &, possibly, all of what he has accomplished will be (hopefully) reversed. What he didn’t count on was Americans waking up & grass-roots organizing. If you attained the Presidency & thought you were going to ‘transform America’ based on your vision & dreams, you, too, like any other human being would be angry & depressed — it’s only a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Not only this, but to be the 1st black president with the very real possibility of not being elected to a 2nd term has to weigh on him.
As far as day to day Presidential tasks: We all have known that they are just mundane distractions for him from his real transformation mission.
It’s absolutely absurd that anyone would think that Obama suffers from schizophrenic. Anyone who believes this or wants to believe this probably should consider becoming a MSNBC viewer for the sheer drama & ridiculousness of it. He’s certainly no paranoid Nixon.
I think that some members of his Admin. are being asked to leave because they are not good fits. I sense that others are leaving because they don’t believe in his agenda; I‘m sure many of them were taken by surprise just like the rest of us when it came to exactly what ’transformation’ meant. And I’m sure others are running for their political lives before they become less marketable; not wise to go down with an unpopular sinking ship. We all know from his sit down with the Repubs on HC & failing to incorporate even “1” of their recommendations in the HC bill shows that he is not open to any input, but, rather, has a unfaulting, closed mind-set concerning his vision.

1. Limited government, kept as small and managable as NEEDED.
2. It answers TO THE PEOPLE.
I have been monitoring different news services about the world lately and am fastly becoming alarmed about events to happen soon…
1. There is no current budget approved by Congress.
2. No decision on the tax cuts due to expire at the end of 2010.
3. Come March 2011 the federal bonds will be coming for renewal or sales
4. Our National Debt ceiling is shortly to be reached.
I had been concerned about the Progressives launching a political coup during the lame-duck session and figure there is still an outside chance for it to happen in some form.
Yet it looks like they are also setting up the national suicide pact at this time, more precisely they already have. By doing nothing, they will do their best to take the whole country down in flames about them however it may be done.
American must stand strong in faith of the Almighty, the times are going to get tough with hard choices to be made – the storm is not coming, it is HERE, on the near horizon, and we still have a small window of time left.
Let us use it wisely dear Lord, and guide us through the night, and the storm unto a better tommorow for which all Americans can achieve.

Look, we ate all this same food when I was a kid, and obesity rates were not nearly as high. One big difference was we had an hour of PE every day where our teachers made sure every kid in the class was being active and participating in a real physical activity. Nowadays, you can’t force kids to participate, or to do something they aren’t good at – they might get thier feelings hurt. And after school, our parents made us play outside till dinner instead of playing video games or watching TV. It absolutely amazes me that the Government wants to put kids on a restricted diet when all could be remedied by a little more exercise and sound parenting!

Posted on October 20, 2010 at 11:33amThis has gone too far. Enough! I don’t want my kids to be malnourished. OK, add more fruits and veggies that’s fine, but I don‘t think that’s what’s going on here. I believe they want a society that is nothing but skin and bones, on the verge of starvation. I think they want to ban potatoes. While it is true that obesity is unhealthy, it is also true that being undernourished is orders of magnitude worse. (for you liberals that’s factors of 10) I’ve listened to a liberal doctor, (Dr Edell), going on 30 years now, and he is constantly cautioning people about these extreme diets that eliminate whole food groups/types completely. He preaches moderation and eating a wide variety of foods. New studies suggest that when we are older, those with a little extra weight will live longer. The point here is liberals don’t even agree on things like this. Who the H are they … Anyway … When you eliminate certain foods, you starve the body of vital nutrients, which affects things like muscle and brain development. Well … there you go, that’s all you need to know about liberals. They’ve starved their brains to the point of being ignorant ;-) I guess that explains everything.

Posted on October 20, 2010 at 2:58pmI was thinking about having homemade potato soup and a baked potato for dinner. After this garbage, I know I with have them. The woman is obviously an example of compulsive disorder whose children will one day have some serious mental problems because of their mother. I grew up in the country when dinner was a meat, potato of some sort and another vegetable. Mom was a baker so there was always pie or cake or ice cream and cookies for dessert! My “nickname” was Skinny because I was the tallest girl in class and was very thin! I’m still thin and I love my potatoes, fruit, desserts, specially real ice cream. The First Lady is driving me nuts–as a teacher in primary and intermediate grades, twice a day the kids went outside for recess and ran off their energy–they also had gym class everyday! NOT SO TODAY! In the Summer you were outside playing and I only remember a couple of kid who were considered fat! Kids live your lives and ignore this nut!

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 10:08pmAn inalienable right…to spend your WIC $ on potatoes? I don‘t think you’ll find that in the
Report Post »Constitution. The Dept of Ag is trying to LIMIT potatoes
in school lunches in favor of better nutrition. Don’t
our kids have a right to eat well?
