Gov’t Health Care: Lack of Water Forces Patients to Drink From Vases at UK Hospital

Thirsty patients at a British hospital were so desperate for care and especially water that they had to drink from flower vases, family members claim.

Julie Bailey, one such family member whose mother Bella died at the hospital in question, said patients were left “screaming” out in pain on chaotic and under-staffed wards at Stafford Hospital. When she approached the hospital about the matter, she said it told her it could not leave water out overnight due to “health and safety.”

Bailey told her story to a panel looking into the situation, the Daily Mail reports.

But lack of water isn‘t Bailey’s only concern. She said her mother once collapsed after no staff were available to reconnect her disconnected oxygen supply.

According to the Daily Mail, Baily is just one of many who are worried about the government-run hospital. The paper reports that “it has been claimed that hundreds of patients died at the hospital, run by Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, as a result of sub-standard treatment.”

That “sub-standard“ treatment includes accusations of putting ”cost-cutting ahead of patient welfare.”

Baily set up an organization, Cure the NHS, to draw attention to the facility and government’s failing national health system (NHS).

“The launch of the campaign,” the website says, “brought in many similar stories to ours. Their loved ones had been neglected or abused on those wards.”

Donald Berwick, director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, has claimed a love affair with Britain‘s NHS and it’s government-run program. His critics say his “love” and approach will eventually lead to the cost-cutting dilemma patients such as Baily’s mother have experienced first-hand.

@Zorro6821 is full of crap. If anyone goes to an ER in the USA, they will be treated regardless of insurance coverage or not.

Someone else commented that its the welfare folks that use the ER as their personal clinic. I saw this first hand one time when I brought my wife to the ER for a broken ankle. While we were waiting, this welfare woman came in and said “I gots a toofache”. The triage nurse told her to go see a dentist in the morning, and that a toothache is not a medical emergency. This woman would have no part of that! She demanded to be seen…and eventually she was. If she had to pay $50 or $100 to be seen, she might think twice about it.

I have insurance coverage, but a trip to the ER costs me $100 copay. Yet the people that don’t have insurance get seen on the backs of us that do. They should have to pay something. I think a reasonable copay of $50 or $100 to utilize the ER would keep a lot of the riff raff out of there trying to get some Vicodin for a toofache.

And, Obamacare = Socialize medicine. No doubt about it. Just another power grab by the big govt communists to control every aspect of our lives.

If you read my post, I was turned down at “clinics” as they were the closest in the area. I was treated at Pomona Hospital and my co-pay was $1200.00. An if you read my posts, I do not agree with Obama Care as it has done nothing but force people to buy lousy insurance. My point was that the system is broken and Obama made it worse. Instead of freaking out the feeble minded with words like socialized medicine, maybe a solution would be“COMPETITION” and break up the Monopolies and create laws that would level the playing field like…no denial, no more group plans, every individual is responsible for paying for their own insurance, no special deal, buying across state lines, and making sure that the insurance company deals directly with the hospital or doctor. You should not be responsible if the insurance doesn’t want to pay. At least my mind can come up with solutions. Sounds like your feeble TV infested brain only listens to the propaganda dished out to you by all the networks, including FOX.

Jeff your full of crap…can you read, I said clinics not hospital. I went to 3 clinics as I was in the High desert area. Yes the hospital did take me moron, but that was not my point. My point was that we have flaws that must be addressed. Also I said that I lived in Canada and was very pleased with their healthcare…is that a problem. Is it wrong that I was treated well or should I just agree with Beck and say lie. Why do we always have to trash other countries? Maybe we are a little too self absorbed, that we cannot see beyond our TV sets. I do not buy the CRAP that we have the best healthcare in the world. The WHO ranks us just above Latvia. We cannot even make anything anymore, and about 40% Americans now rely on some sort of govt assistance. We also have no southern border and most of our cities and states are broke. I hear Canada is economically doing the best out of the G8 followed by Germany. Canada has a border that is enforced and isthe biggest exporter oil to the USA. It is also our largest trading partner and yes they have Nationalized Healthcare. I never hear of Canadian sneaking across the border for a better life, but I do hear that the number of Americans trying to apply for Canadian status is at historic highs. I wonder why!!

Socalism is redistribution of wealth. Involuntary redistribution of wealth is stealing. The government was never given the constitutional right to steal money to engage in socialism. These communist liars ( Congress and the POTUS ) have crossed the line of constitutional government and exalted themselves as the Great Benevolent Saviors of people. They continously Glorify and exalt themeselves and the Federal Government as the FINAL SOLUTION to every so-called unsolveable problem the People encounter. These Exalted Federal SAVIORS have had up until now free reign at lying, stealing and cheating the real Americans out of our national heritage, national honor and our national Patriotism. I agree. Always trying to point out flaws is another countries healthcare system does not in any way make our system better. It only prove that the finger pointer has an agenda. We all agree that our healthcare system is a mess and Obamacare made it worse. Can we not focus on our system and how to improve it. All these stupid sound bites like Communism, Socialism, Fascism, mean nothing as long as we do not address the real problem. Don’t you folks realize that all our politicians have public tax funded healthcare. I do not see any of them giving it up or demanding that they pay for their own insurance, like the rest of us. The media is a powerful tool for the Corporations. They pay for the advertising and I am sure Fox and the rest do not want to alienate their income source. Most Americans only know about TV shows like Dancing with the Stars, Jersey Shore etc. Forget Communism, we are sliding into a third world nation rapidly. We are importing more poverty than all the nations on earth combined and the outcome is a divided and polarized country. We are now a tribal nation, not much unlike Iran, Irag and Afganistan. How can this once great nation ever recover, I cannot see it. When all the politicians are corrupt and only care about being re-elected, we are screwed. Beck has it right, in the sense that we will see chaos ahead and we must prepare.

Yes, socialized medicine is very bad…
I live in France 5 months of the year…it’s absolutely appalling- especially if you need healthcare. There are people everywhere with untreated medical conditions. Don’t even think of going to the hospital, they have guards at the door to keep you out.

Well, it’s not really like that. In fact, a friend of ours, decided to have surgery in France rather than returning to Los Angeles during the summer. His experience: Prompt visits and evaluation by a doctor practicing in a public hospital. Successful surgery and ER follow-up when he thought he might have an intestinal obstruction. And, regular visits by a home healthcare nurse.

His US insurance pays only 70% because he is “out of network,” but the additional expense is minimal, since the fees are so much lower. BTW: His surgeon’s brother practices in the States- makes a whole lot more money, but is much less satisfied with his medical practice. Also, the French surgeon could practice in a private hospital in France, but he feels the public hospital has better facilities.

As a tourist (i.e. less than 3 months in France), you will receive free heath care for emergencies. Just in case you wanted to know if you need special health insurance while visiting France. Try it, you’ll like it.

It’s hard to avoid the obvious reference–when the clean man gets down in the mud with the pig, the pig doesn’t emerge clean. In parenting it’s called ignoring a tantrum.

Beck does have good insight, however on healthcare he seems to be a “puppet” for big insurance, as he never comes up with solutions on this subject. There is a video of Beck from CNN when he was saying how bad and backward our healthcare system is and that was even before Obamcare nightmare. What changed….he got rich!!! Every industrialized country in the world has it and we never seem to here horror stories from Israel, Japan, Swiss, Canada, Germany, Australia, Austria, Netherlands,Sweden,Denmark, New Zealand etc. So untill you can equate the horrors with all the above countries then I will agree. The problem is how care is managed and that applies to the USA. I guess you are a government employee or someone else pays your insurance , like a union. Read a British paper every now and again. If you think the US government can effectively manage health care, you are a nutbag.

Beyond all that, the entire idea is unconstitutional. I know that means little to those not of this great nation, but it is our supreme law and as Americans, we will not allow government to run our lives and live as some kind of collective. We were founded on, and have ingrained in our DNA a rugged individualism that will not be easily quelled. We are awake now. Watch what happens.

Somebody explain to me how insurance companies add to quality healthcare. Insurance companies are merely the middleman between you and your doctor. Their main objective is to make a profit based on statistical calculations. The end goal is the insure the healthy and deny the ones who require care. The only loyalty they have is to their share holders. Lets call it shareholder care or Wall Street care, but don’t call it health care. Insurance is not healthcare by any stretch. I have never heard of an insurance carrier performing heart surgery. Profit motivated healthcare does not deliver. Lets abolish Medicare and Medicaid and really go for free enterprise. Lets not be shackled by the Socialist Medicare system. Let our seniors fend for themselves and be rugged resilient and independent. The American way!!! Just like all the John Wayne movies or Rambo.

I lost my mother to a floor nurse and P.A.’s negligence in a nursing home under the best circumstances. I was there twice a day and on top of everything, I thought, but I‘m not a doctor and while I warned them something wasn’t right they waited too long to transport her to the hospital – what followed was a nightmare I will never forget. The hospital and doctors did their best but it was too late, she endured two weeks of misery before I brought her home to die. I hope, for the rest of your life, you never have to make the decision not to resuscitate for someone you love. @Grandmaof5

I am sorry to hear of your mother’s passing in such a manner. Please accept my condolences belatedly. No one should have to tell such a story, yet this may be the future of our land if we cannot make the changes needed soon.

Welcome to the future of Amercian health care; where even water is going to be rationed, and medical care will become simply – wait around until they die, and the screaming of desperation shall finally end.

Of course the political elites will not have to suffer such as this.

America, I ask each of you who believe in the power of prayer to join each day with at least one other person to pray for providence to intervein and guide our families, communities, and nation in saftey and wisdom from the Almighty. For what one person can do, many of us united by prayer and faith can do mightly with the Fathers aid.

      @Snow

I’m all for the power of prayer, but something tells me God is going to let us get ourselves out of this mess, since we put ourselves into it. What we need is for everyone to band together as one loud voice and demand our elected officials to put a stop to this madness. It’s time to stop asking and start DEMANDING!!!

We already have this…have you ever been to an emergency room…pretty scary place, but the worst part is that we pay 3 times as much as any other country. I have lived in Canada and all I can say is that I was always treated well, chose my own doctor and never saw a bill. When I was in the emergency, the first question was not “Do you have Insurance” and we cannot do anything until we call your insurance company. In Canada the first question was “How can we help you”. My wait time was 30 minutes. In California I waited 6 hours for a fractured ankle. One time I had a Motorcycle accident and ripped open my arm, I was refused by two clinics because I ddi not have prrof of insurance with me. I will take single payer anytime. Medicare is single payer and I don’t see anyone refusing it. Obamacare is the furthest thing from “Socializied” medicine. Obamacare is an outright sellout to the insurance companies and the destruction of the medicare system. It’s a big world out there and I am sure Isreal, Germany, Australia, Canada, Swiss, Japan, Netherlands, France….I am sure that the people there are quite happy with their “socialized Med”. I would like to know how my people posting actually pay their own healthcare 100%. When you pay $15,000 a year out of your own pocket with deductibles, and get lousy care then maybe you would see things differently. Only fools paint with a broad brush.

Yes we got ourselves into the mess, definitly no doubt there. Yet it could never hurt to keep asking the Almighty for guidance to help get us out of the mess we need. I should have been more clear on that point, my apologies.

Put down the crack pipe, Canadians come to the USA for their health care because we have the best system in the world…….or at least did until Obamacare.

      @ Zorro:
Hospitals in the USA are not legally allowed to deny you treatment for lack of ability to pay. Period. If they denied you, they are breaking the law. If the Canadian system is so great, why is it that I sit and talk to Canadians 3 times a week at the Florida Spine Institute who CANNOT get the surgery they need to even be able to exist without pain, much less walk and/or work. I am there 3x a week for therapy after my 3 surgeries and there is a vast majority of Canadians there willing to pay to get what they cannot get at home. Canada is rationing care just like every other socialized system and they are waking up to the ineffectiveness and sheer magnitude of the cost to society. Now we are going to go in the direction that those systems are turning away from because it can’t work? Good Call.

You’re right FUBAR, you can not be denied emergency treatment in the US, the guy that said he was refused over insurance is lying. They always ask if you have insurance but they won‘t turn you away if you don’t have it.
I think alot of the overcrowding in emergency rooms is caused by the welfare folks who recieve free medical and take thier kids to the emergency room for the flu. I pay 100 percent of my own healthcare costs, I don’t have insurance and it costs me about $500 per year for doctors bills. Charge $50 for everyone who visits an emergency room and you will stop the overcrowding since the entitlenent class will stop going there for trivialities.

Yeah, I have 2 Canadian friends who were in their 20′s and loved canadian healthcare cause they had never really used it, until they had a child that needed surgery to live. They were told it was to expensive, they child would die. They moved to the US, their child was treated, and is now doing fine.

They can say you all have “health insurance” … but that doesn’t mean you will get “health CARE” … this seems to be lost on those who think they are going to get something for nothing.

ZORRO06821 You are so full of it I bet your eyes are brown, Our Emergency rooms are far better then Canadian Health Care Crap, they have save me and my family on many occasions, even at times I had no Insurance. If Canadian care is so great, why did your Prime Minister come to America for Tests??? You dont see the King of Saudi Arabia heading to Canada to get checked out and what about all those regular citizens from your country coming here for Medical services and in their own words descibing the horrorsof your health care services and thanking God for American Hospitals. We sure as hell aren’t running up north for our health care, you need to stay your behind in Canada and keep that parasite Michael Moore there with you.

The average UK nurse starts out at 20k us dollars whereas the average US nurse will start at 34k. Of course their understaffed. Government controlled healthcare will also require hospitals to lower nurses pay when government says “you can’t charge that much for that procedure, you can only charge this much…”. Then you’ll see the exodus of nurses from our healthcare field. And NO nurses are not overpaid.

I hesitate to gauge the healthcare in a country based on the statement of a single person. But okay, suppose you want to do that. Here is Glenn Beck talking about the horrors of health care in the United States and how it almost killed him. If you won’t listen to Glenn, who will you listen to?

I live in Canada. I have been a patient for the Canadian single-payer medical system. I have a 1st hand experience of being the emergency patient and being the patient of the hospital. It’s not good. It’s burocratic. The goal of the service provider is not my health, it’s the rules of the burocrats. Waiting lists for the operations are long. People have a good chance to die while waiting for the critical operations. I know several cases of that sort. Just recently, the PM of the Province of Nova Scotia went to the clinic in USA to have the quite a routine bypass surgery on his heart. What article describes is pretty close to what I see in Canadian health care system.

I lived in the Soviet Union, and I have the 1st hand experience of the state-run (single-payer) medical system. It’s exactly what the article describes.

I lived in Israel, and I know that Israel does NOT have the single-payer socialized medical system. Instead, they have the number of “Medical Cooperatives” (“Kupat Holim”) whom you pay your medical assuarence and who are the actual Medical Service Providers. It’s NOT what GB NHS is, it’s NOT Obama-care.

The bottom line is: single-pay medical system is a very-very bad idea! Even GB has realized it now and moving away from it. Hope America will stop the destruction of their Health Care system and stop Obama-care. Otherwise, we, Canadians will have nowhere to go when we need a good quality medical services.

JZS! You are missing the point. Glenn Beck (God bless him and his sole) is talking in the youtube clip about the problem in one particular clinic and speculating about potential treatment quality in others (maybe less famous). The article and the discussion here is about the MEDICAL SYSTEM. It’s a huge difference between these two – the particular clinic and the system. Hope you get it.

At one side nurses are striking to cut down nurse-patient ratios whereas at the other end patients are dying because of lack of staff and sub-standard care. Thanks to the growing number of diseases and the economic downturn resulting in patient’s dying of lack of even basic amenities like water.
