Gov’t Issues New Visual to Tell You How to Eat — And It Only Cost $2 Million

The Agriculture Department has issued a new food guide aimed at making healthier food choices easier. While that may be all well and good, the surgeon general admits the change is connected to Michelle Obama‘s obesity crusade that’s already seen social engineering-like changes in school lunch programs.
The new guide is called “My Plate” — a simple circle divided into quadrants that contain fruits, vegetables, protein and grains. It will replace USDA’s food pyramid, which has been around in various forms since 1992. The new guide even comes with an accompanying website:
According to the surgeon general, that change is connected to Michelle Obama. And according to the secretary of agriculture, it has roots in believing that people just couldn’t figure out the old one. Forbes reports:
“We’re working to make healthy choices easy choices,” said Surgeon General Regina Benjamin at this morning’s unveiling, who linked the new diagram to First Lady Obama’s Let’s Move campaign. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack followed by explaining the need for the tool, “My Pyramid was simply too complex,” he said, and is confident the new tool will be effective is a “simple visual research based icon about proportion sizes and what should be on the American plate.”
That opened up a door to some lampooning by Gawker:
America’s top doctor, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, confirms that this new “plate” is connected to Michelle Obama’s larger plot to stop fat people from being so fat all the time. According to Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack, the fatties were too fat to interpret a pyramid, which was really just a garden-variety 2D triangle.
The AP interprets it with less snark:
USDA officials say the pyramid was tired out, overly complex and tried to communicate too many different nutrition facts at once. The new symbol, unveiled Thursday at the department with first lady Michelle Obama in attendance, is simple and gives diners an idea of what should be on their plates when they sit down at the dinner table.
One change viewers will notice is that there are no longer any references to sugars, fats or oils, and what was once a category called “meat and beans” is now simply “proteins.” Next to the plate is a blue circle for dairy, which could be a glass of milk or a food such as cheese or yogurt.
The plate is base on recently-released nutrition guidelines. In addition to telling people to drastically reduce salt and continue limiting saturated fats, the most recent set of guidelines asked diners to enjoy food but balance calories by eating less and taking smaller portions. It also suggested making half of your plate fruits and vegetables, a message easily translated on the dinner plate.
But while those behind the new icon are excited, critics are jumping on the large price tag behind the project. From Forbes:
According to the New York Times, the U.S.D.A. has already spent $2 million developing and promoting the plate logo, costs that covered research, focus groups and the creation of a new Web site. That total will likely swell after publicity efforts are kicked off in the first year of the new campaign announced this morning by First Lady Obama, who promised that her Let’s Move initiative would continue to work to promote MyPlate in coming months.
Still, Michelle Obama couldn’t be happier.
“Since seeing the plate icon, I can’t help but look at my own plate differently,” she said. “I find myself doing a quick checklist to know that I have a balanced meal. I know that in the months to come millions of Americans will be doing the same thing thanks to MyPlate.”
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Organic is expensive but I do try to buy organic chicken or without injections, same with hamburger, I buy the best I can without shots & growth hormones in the meat. If you start paying attention, you actually start cooking better and more nutritious meals. Try to remember empty calories.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 2:20pmIt’s actually not a bad idea. I mean, the pyramid (triangle) is pretty difficult to comprehend. It has THREE right angles, people! Now, a cirlce has no right angles. Enough said.
On a serious note, we are a bunch of fatties in this country. The poorer people are, the more likely they seem to be fat. That’s pretty weird. I think that is really part of a greater plan, probably related to the dumbing down of our schools. Make us fat and stupid, and we will be easier to control. Just like in Wall-E.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 2:49pmThe reasons why the poor a fatter than most is because WE CAN’T AFFORD fresh vegetables and meats. We buy Hamburger Helper and rice products. Meals that go far are full of sugars and fats.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 3:00pmAnd the reason those foods are cheap is because the government subsidizes them. If they subsidized healthy, whole foods more poor people might buy them. Thank you for helping me make my point about it being a giant conspiracy.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 10:56pmIt’s not really that the pyramid was hard to read so much as that it was wrong. Cattle barely need to eat as much grain as they told us we should. And cattle is what humans would end up looking like if they followed it. This looks like a slightly better diet, except for that saucer that the dairy lobby got them to slap on the side. Dairy should really be part of the protein group, and when you separate them out the cart shows a lot more protein than you actually need.

Posted on June 3, 2011 at 12:40amThe poor are fatter because they buy junk food with their food stamps. Try eating pinto beans and cornbread 3x a week and get off the junk food. Frozen veggies are supposed to be better because they are processed and frozen almost immediately and most pkgs. are around a dollar if you get store brand.
Report Post »Stop eating so much white bread, stop drinking soda pop, drink water. Try salads when greens are on sale. Shop the sales, stop buying the most expensive brands. Make out a grocery list and stick to it unless something you need is on sale. This is how I live, and it gets to be a habit to buy the best and most nutritious for the least amount of money. Stay out of the bakery and bake your own.

This is why so many of us think that the Prez and his wife are totally out of touch with the American people. BO keeps promising to make changes that will help us, but all we get is promises. While they eat lobster weekly, purchase new limos, fly around the world enjoying life in the WH, the rest of us have seen food and gasoline prices skyrocket, watched the systematic destruction of our jobs –indirectly or directly as a result of environmental issues, and have no idea what will happen to the skyrocketing health care costs for –NO,NOT THE VERY WEALTHY–but instead the average American working person.

Poor little liberal dumbshi** – so scared of having the freedome to choose what it eats that it needs the government to take care of it and keep it safe from the cradle to the grave, and anybody who says different is a RACIST, so there!
Your statement that this was “job creation” is so breathtakingly stupid that it does not deserve a response. Ego-stroking for Moo-chelle’s enormous a$$,. perhaps, but job creation? Give me a freaking break! Surely even YOU are not that stoopid?

Yes indeedy, I like this a whole lot better than the pyramid. It’s got a much “freer” feel to it.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 8:09pmThe nanny state at it wasting our money or should I say China’s money. I have looked at all guidlines for eating healty and I can say if I ate all the calories they said you need I would be really fat. I think they had better rethink what they are saying. One size does not fit all. I can’t imagine all the waste there is going to be in the schools and children simply not eating. Anyone who has had children understands some do not like plain foods. When my children were growing up I had to make their lunches every day. They hated the school food. That was a long time ago. I guess alot of children are going to go hungry. Can you say food fight? I don’t want to be the ones cleaning up the mess in the cafeterias, not to mention the amount of food the children will throw out.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 9:04pmBroke or not, they published it around the FDA! Doesn’t this become a pattern for the Obummer administration? We have specialized agencies in charge of research and even the president’s wife takes control of the government. The diet plan does look better than the FDA version, however, they should have had more protein, which could come from vegetables as well, and less grains and water in place of the milk. Cows are stuck with Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH) which goes through the cow and ends up in the milk. The same thing happens with the antibiotics they are given. They say it’s to keep them healthy, but everyone that drinks the milk gets a dose of BGH and antibiotics. Then society wonders why little girls develop at a young age, and society is experiencing an epidemic of antibiotic resistant bacteria! Think out-of-the-box people. DO NOT let the government lead you blindly down a path to extinction! The One World Government supporters are planning to make most land in America available ONLY to animals. They want a reduction of people from the current 6 billion or so to less than 500 million! What happens to society? They are trying to kill us with untested drugs, genetic engineering of our food supply and the chemicals that are allowed to be placed on our bodies. Look at the content of processed foods. If you cannot pronounce the contents, don’t eat it!

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 10:57pmOne day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he asked about his bill and the barber replies: “I’m sorry, I cannot accept money from you: I’m doing community service this week.” The florist is pleased and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open his shop door there is a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.
Later a cop comes in for a haircut and when he goes to pay his bill the barber says “I’m sorry, I cannot accept money from you: I’m doing community service this week.” The cop is happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a thank you note and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.
Later a Republican comes in for a haircut, and when he goes to pay his bill the barber again relies “I’m sorry, I cannot accept money from you: I’m doing community service this week.” The Republican is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open his shop there is a thank you note and a dozen various books such as “How to Improve Your Business” and “Becoming More Successful”.
Then a Democrat comes in for a haircut, and when he goes to pay the bill the barber again replies “I’m sorry, I cannot accept money from you: I’m doing community service this week.” The Democrat is happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open his shop, there are a dozen Democrats lined up waiting for a free haircut.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 11:08pmHow dare the government spend to educate Americans on healthy eating? We’re probably the fattest nation on Earth, with the greatest incidence of heart disease, and have the the greatest proportion of young people who are to fat to serve in army as well as the greatest mortality for fatuousness.
Any Government recommendations about healthy eating (which is forcing you to eat what they want because you can’t do against the Government) takes away from the freedoms that our Founding Fathers wrote into the Constitution of the United States of America.
For the First Lady to recommend healthy eating is pure communism

I learned it when I was in second grade, and STILL know it by heart. It isn’t hard, and by the way MATH isn’t hard either. I wish “teachers” would stop saying things are “too hard” for children to learn, and just TEACH!!!!! The problem isn’t with the students ability to learn, the problem is the teachers WILLINGNESS to TEACH.
