Gov’t Reacts to Wikileaks Docs Detailing 700 Interrogations at Gitmo

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Secret documents about detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison reveal new information about some of the men that the United States believes to be terrorists, according to reports about the files released by several American and European newspapers. The U.S. government criticized the publication as “unfortunate.”

The military detainee assessments were made public Sunday night by U.S. and European newspapers after the WikiLeaks website obtained the files. The records contain details of the more than 700 detainee interrogations and evidence the U.S. had collected against these suspected terrorists, according to the media outlets.

It’s not clear if the media outlets published the documents with the consent of WikiLeaks.

The files – know as Detainee Assessment Briefs or DABs – describe the intelligence value of the detainees and whether they would be a threat to the U.S. if released. To date, 604 detainees have been transferred out of Guantanamo while 172 remain locked up.

The disclosures are likely to provide human right activists with additional ammunition that some cases against inmates appear to be based on flawed evidence. However, the DABs show certain inmates were more dangerous than previously known to the public and could complicate efforts by the U.S. to transfer detainees out of the controversial prison that President Barack Obama has failed to close.

The dossiers provide new insights into some of the prison’s most notorious detainees such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. According to The New York Times, Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, commanded a Maryland resident to kill Pakistan’s former present Pervez Musharraf.

Another high-value detainee, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, bragged that he outranked Mohammed who was then considered the terrorist group’s No.3. Al-Nashiri faces charges before a military commission for his suspected role in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole. According to The Times, Al-Nashiri was also consumed with jihad and believed women were a distraction.

He was so “dedicated to jihad that he reportedly received injections to promote impotence and recommended the injections to others so more time could be spent on the jihad,” according to al-Nashiri’s file.

Business Insider gives more details about the documents:

You can read instances of unwarranted detention, the interrogation of a senile 89-year-old and a 15-year-old and waterboarding. Prisoners are accused of hurling urine and feces at guards. Guards are accused of flushing Korans down the toilet and other forms of psychological torture.

The files also reveal how dangerous the detainees are, as many vow to wage war against America if released. 42 detainees who were released did return to battle.

U.S. officials said the documents “may or may not represent the current view of a given detainee” and criticized the decision by media organizations to publish the “sensitive information.”

“It is unfortunate that several news organizations have made the decision to publish numerous documents obtained illegally by WikiLeaks concerning the Guantanamo detention facility,” said Ambassador Daniel Fried, the Obama administration’s special envoy on detainee issues, and Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell.

The classified files contain rare pictures of many of the inmates. One shows Abu Zubaydah, who has been described as al-Qaida’s “travel agent,” sporting a beard and an eye patch. Zubaydah was captured in Pakistan in 2002 and taken to several CIA black sites overseas until he was transferred to Guantanamo in 2006 for the second and last time.

The files do not mention what happened to Zubaydah and others while they were in CIA custody. Zubaydah and Mohammed were both waterboarded dozens of times by CIA interrogators.

The Washington Post reported that the DABs offered new details about the movement of Osama bin Laden and top deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri after the 9/11 attacks and the internal disputes that erupted within the terrorist organization.

Many of the 704 assessments are riddled with ambiguous language. A Times analysis shows the word “possibly” is used 387 times.

    This is the account of a Marine who’s over in Afghanistan. You might want to read it:

    I emailed you some time ago my praise for your work. I do so again. Currently I am deployed with my Marine infantry battalion to Helmand, AFG. Daily I get to see what the country offers: subjugation of women, abuse of children, stagnation of minds, industry and hope… wasted lives. In a word: Islam.

    I have had some poignant moments over the last many months in Afghanistan. They have shaped my view of this place and Islam. The other day I was walking from a compound to our vehicles with a group of elders, when off about 60 feet away I notice a woman of probably 20 or 25 walking towards us with her little daughter. She was in the full body black cloth coffin, moving like a wispy wraith. Every movement was fear. When she got to about 20 paces away from us, she moved off the road, next to the canal, and squatted down, back towards us. Her little daughter did the same. Later I asked one of our interpreters why she did that and he said because she did not want to “bring dishonor.” I asked him rhetorically, “Do you realize how absolutely screwed up that is?” Of course he didn’t.

    A few days later, we walked next to some compounds in an area the Marines had never been to before. As we patrolled and secured, a group of little boys came out and watched us. In a nation with no literacy, Marines are a week’s worth of excitement and gossip. I had some candies in a bag so I passed some out as we talked with the kids about foreigners, Taliban, and peace. At that moment, 2 of the cutest little girls you have ever seen came out peeked out of the compound and immediately the little boys flew into a rage and chased them with sticks, throwing them and hitting one girl square in the back. I immediately chastened the boys and told them that what they did was not wrong, it was evil. The boys shouted back that they were “just girls!”

    Two days ago, one of the linguists I work with was sitting looking like a man broken-hearted. I asked what was wrong and his friends, all full of vacant eyed smiles, said, “His fiancé killed herself!” as they all laughed except for the broken hearted one. I didn’t believe them at first because humans do not respond to tragedy in triumphant laughter. I again asked what the matter was and they again reiterated that his girl had killed herself. At this he looked up mournfully and nodded. Her parents tried to force her into a marriage with another man and she resisted. They forced, so she took poison. His friends went on to explain that it was OK because “she was just a girl and there are many others.” I stopped them as only an angry Marine can. I described to them in very insensitive language that they are all jacked up and their mood represents why their country is in the Stone Age, that this place has no heart and their souls are dead.     They’ve killed 270 million non-Muslims since the advent of Islam in 622 A.D. And untold Muslims because if you no longer want to kill for Allah and you leave Islam you will have a death threat on your head because the cost of leaving Islam is death.

    For your information our first foreign war was waged against the Muslim Barbary Pirates in 1805. Thomas Jefferson didn’t want us to be paying the tribute any more, in order to prevent the Muslim Barbary Pirates from kidnapping and killing or enslavening and castrating Americans and taking their wives as booty, so he bought a Quran and read it. After reading the Quran he realized that we would have to go to war to stop them. And he did. And he won. That’s when we stopped paying them the tribute (Muslim tax) for letting Americans live when on the high seas.

    The Muslim Barbary Pirates also had the habit invading Britain. They’d scoop up everyone in the coastal regions there and kill the men or enslaven them and take their women as booty as well. The Islamists are the greatest enslavers of all time. They‘re still enslavening people in Africa and all over they world where they think they’re entitled to their male Supremacy.

    Read the Quran why don’t you?

    In any Islamic country you would be treated as a 2nd class citizen and stoned to death for what male Supremacists do on a daily basis. Under Sharia your testimony in court would have half the weight of a man’s testimony. You would be treated like a child under Islam and beaten on a regular basis for looking at a man in the wrong way.

    Again, read the Quran.

    And to say that “no Muslim has ever killed an American because he wasn’t a Muslim?!” What do you think 9/11 was all about? What do the think the Fort Hood murders of our finest was all about? The guy who killed our soldiers at Fort Hood was a Soldier of Allah and he yelled “Allahu Akbar” as he killed them. What do you think the Christmas Tree would-be bombing and the Times Square would-be bombing was all about?

    And for you to refer to the “racist policies of Israel” is beyond belief. What racist policies would they be when all they are doing is defending themselves against the Islamists who want to wipe them of the face of the earth and have said as such.     This is EXACTLY what the progressive lefties were hoping for. They are not upset about this. They are probably celebrating! They want to go after the last administration over this and always have!
    These are prisoners of WAR. The war on terror exists because they tell us, “We will win because you value life and we value death more.” Torture is too good for some of them, but they think to die as a martyr is a reward. I say keep them there forever and torture as may as need be to stop as many attacks on INNOCENT people as possible! THINK OF THE TYPE OF TORTURE THEY IMPOSE ON US! THE POOR VICTIMS OF 9.11 HAD TO MAKE THE CHOICE TO BURN OR JUMP TO THEIR DEATHS. How much more cruel can it get?

    I don’t see anything wrong with what the US is going. We need to do everything in our power to stop these terrorists even using torture. I personally have no problems with Torture as when you go to war you go to win and you do what’s necessary to win even if you have to use Torture or other methods.

      What liberals fail to comprehend is: When we refuse to use enhanced interrogation techniques (supervised by doctors in most cases), we hand the bad guys over to people like the Egyptian secret service and have our CIA guys ask questions while the Egyptians get medieval on them. If you really cared for the safety of the detainees, you would want the U.S. using enhanced interrogation techniques on them. I bet the detainees would agree.

    My guess is Obama purposely released these documents! He had been very outspoken about what he feels about the detainees and will do anything to discredit the Bush administration since many people have stood up to support the Bush efforts on the “War on Terroism” specially since Obot has done nothing but put our country more at risk with his stupidity!       Gitmo is a non-issue, anyone who thinks it matters has no idea of what truly does.
      Gitmo is a distraction and used by politicians to manipulate your vote to grant them the permission and power to pursue their self-interests.
      It’s the distraction that causes you to look at it, thus taking your eye (mind) away from or off of the real issues.
      Wake-up, what’s happening to Muslims in GITMO is nothing compared to what happens to them in Muslim countries

    The “War ON Terrorism” is a “War FOR Terrorism” upon the United States. It is destroying the country, a tool to take away freedoms bit by bit. Much of this is orchestrated for regulation, oppression, taking away our freedoms in the name of “safety”.

      If political correctness was set aside, more progress would be made on fighting Muslim extremists. Instead of focusing on who is really commiting these acts, the government suspects everyone could be doing it so every American’s rights are violated in the name of security. Why is it that when the government went after the Mafia they didnt spend their time investigating people with Swedish last names?

      As much as I would like to think that Bush was inept and the government corrupt, you have to admit the fact their haven’t been any major attacks here since 9/11. Coincidence? Don’t say we would have heard about them. That’s not how it works. You want to keep them guessing as you rendition terror cells into the ether. Can’t believe BHO wants to use the justice department to handle terrorists. Look how effective they are against the criminals in this country that aren’t trying to destroy us on a large scale.
