Gov’t Report: ACORN Improperly Awarded $450,000 FEMA Grant

Oops.
That’s what the government is saying after a Department of Homeland Security report shows that a New Orleans ACORN affiliate was improperly awarded nearly half a million dollars by FEMA in 2007. The money was awarded based on lies and ACORN programs that didn’t exist, and was doled out against the advice of an evaluation panel.
FoxNews.com reports:
In the findings, obtained by FoxNews.com, the inspector general’s office said that FEMA went against the advice of an evaluation panel to hand out the $450,484 grant to the ACORN Institute in New Orleans. From there, not all of the money could be tracked.
“We concluded that the ACORN Institute should not have received these funds, did not fully implement and evaluate the program as approved and could not substantiate all its grant expenditures,” the report said.
The report said that ACORN applied for the fire safety and prevention grant — meant to fund efforts to distribute and promote the use of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers – by claiming to operate programs that did not yet exist. The institute claimed to have partnerships with local fire departments through the “Urban Fire Initiative,” when in fact, that initiative “did not exist prior to the grant application.”
FEMA reduced the grant request from its original $1 million. But the report said the institute could not provide documentation to support how it spent nearly $161,000 of the money it did receive.
ACORN filed for bankruptcy in November, after Congress voted to cut its funding in light of voter fraud accusations.

Posted on December 1, 2010 at 8:54amIt should go beyond just a finding of fact by the Inspector General’s report; those that filled out the application and received the funds should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, receiving both prison time and large fines for all involved. We also should know who approved the grant and initiated the payout against the panel’s recommendation. Was it an Acorn fifth column insider in the agency? You know like the political appointment appointee in the Justice department who declined to prosecute the Black Panthers in Philadelphia for voter intimidation? The American people must demand that all such actions and all malfeasance in the use of our money be prosecuted to the hilt. Enough is enough! The laws are there–we need prosecutors who go after all wrong doers regardless of party, race or anarchist-group affiliation….

Better question: Being that you have to apply for Federal grants, any “improper award” would have been applied for by ACORN.
Oddly enough, applying for grants that you know you don’t qualify for would be called fraud if you or I did it, but somehow ACRON keeps getting “oopsed” into Federal money and nobody goes after them.

I’m still waiting for charges and arrests from all the Wall Street types who were scamming the system, all these so-called feel good organizations who feed off the Government and get grants or funding never being held accountable to where the funds go. After all there is a lot of administrative costs to running these progressive ACORN types and Congress can’t throw OUR money at them fast enough. Once they get one dime it seems they are never cut off, even when there is massive fraud and graft involved. ACORN and other similar groups just change their names when the heat is on.

It would be nice and appropriate to have the House of Representatives have a hearing on this matter under oath in January and ask the questions–(1) Who is responsible? (2) Did they get fired? (3) has the Dept of Justice received notice of the fraud and lack of disclosure of where the funds went (4) if the answer to item 3 is no then back to question 1 and repeat loop until someone gets the message.
