Govt Shutdown = Paid Vacation For Some Workers?

Government Shutdown. That’s the topic du jour in the Newsiverse. But is a government shutdown as terrifying as these talking heads are leading us to believe? Maybe it is a very bad thing if you are one of the people about to be furloughed, then again, maybe not.
There are some 800,000 government employees who are considered ‘non essential’ and they are all being told of their status today, just in case a last-minute deal is not struck.
Who qualifies as essential and gets to stay on the job?
Our troops, air traffic controllers and postal workers are considered to be ‘essential’ and their work will continue.
The non-essential workers will be asked to turn in their government IDs, blackberries and stay home until the funding is approved. They also won’t be getting paid, at least not during the shut down. However, the minute the government is back on the job, the ‘non-essentials’ will return to work and also receive retroactive pay.
Yes, you read that right. In a perfect example of the screaming inefficiency of our government, the people sent home and told not to work, will be getting paid for not working. So, who is really getting hurt by the shutdown? NOBODY! The non-essentials will be given paid days off, and we the taxpayers will foot the bill.
Seriously. Fox News’ Neil Cavuto and John Stossel explain it all for us (the retroactive back pay is about 3:40 into the clip);
Back to the shutdown. Is it really as dangerous and deadly as we are hearing?
It must be. The President is so concerned, that he left DC to spend time on the campaign trail in Philadelphia and New York City. (There’s an election in 20 months you know.) Oh sure, before he left town Obama asked the leaders in Congress to ‘act like adults’ and get a budget approved. One wonders why he did not make that demand back in 2009 when a budget for this year should have been passed.
In spite of all the fear alarms ringing over a possible shutdown and the attendant blame-storming filling the cable news outlets, there is a little something called reality staring us in the face. Any shutdown will likely not last very long. On February 24th, a full six weeks ago, we learned from a frequent MSNBC guest, Charlie Cook, just how (not so) terrible this shutdown might be:
“Most Americans would never even know it if there was a two or six, or one day shutdown.”
If most Americans would not notice the short shutdown, who would feel it the most? The dreaded ‘non-essential’ worker? Oh wait, I forgot, they get paid for every day they don’t work.

Submitting your tip... please wait!

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 12:06amShut it down. Democrats should live by principles if they had any, propose an amendment to Ryan’s budget taxing 75% of the income from all registered democrats with income over $200,000 and nothing is deductible and no tax credits allowed. Next they could impose a 25% tax on the remaining democrat voters to be fair. They have no principles, period!
49 million people pay no taxes and I wonder what that ratio is between Dems and repubs on that number. Let’s assume 30 million are Dems (probably low) then add 15 million illegal aliens you end up with 45 million democrat voters.
Amend the right to vote, you are not allowed to vote if you receive any payment from the govt except SS and you are not allowed to vote if you pay no taxes. This alone would save the country and stop the users from being abusers of our once great ideal.
Shut it down since we don’t have a budget do to their incompetence to begin with especially Mr Ried.

Posted on April 6, 2011 at 10:24pmWisconsin isn’t a sure thing. The margin of votes is about 300, which is about 0.02% of turnout, so a recount is pretty much inevitable. Even if the vote swings to the Dem, she won’t be seated until August, and the Court is likely to hear any appeals before then. Also, according to Charles Franklin, a UW-Madison poli-sci prof, one of the sitting Dems is as likely to vote one way as the other.

Amazing the ignorance on this board. Just because someone who is labled as “non_essential” doesn‘t mean they don’t have a job to do. Non-essential personnell are people mostly in administration so that if there is inclement weather or whatever the case may be the only people that have to be at work are the essential people. You don’t really need administration workers in bad weather or severe weather, however in a hospital you still need your doctors and nurses to show up for work. I hope that clears things for you guys.
And I love my country, very patriotic and still willing to die if necessary to fight all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. Don’t lump me in with socialists and commies, if it wasn’t for the collapse of the economy I would be working outside the government. And let me put to rest about the crap I have been seeing about paid vacations. I worked on the outside all my life except for now here in government. I was allowed on the outside to accrue up to 240 hours of paid vacation, then I would no longer accrue vacation time. Guess what, same here with the government I can only accrue up to 240 hours then I go to use or lose status. Start asking questions instead of assuming at least you would seem to be wiser.

Essentially the same thing the Charles Krauthammer said about the original bill. Just post the same bill again so that it meets all of the laws that the courts are deciding on now. Since there is a majority and since it does not matter if there is a quorum. they just pass it again with all of the court issues addressed. Then there can be discussion about what to do from there.

Prosser, who was backed by all the big Republican money and big out-of-state financial interests that out spent Kloppenburg more than two to one, is likely going down in defeat. Kloppenburg was backed by vested interests on the side of working people; Prosser was backed by vested interests on the side of the parasitic financial ruling elite.
All the Republican propaganda mouthpieces on rightwing radio couldn’t pull it out for Prosser. All the out-of-state parasitic financial money couldn’t pull it out for Prosser. All the Kochster and WMC half-truths couldn’t pull it out for their boy. It was the people of Wisconsin who finally said Enough is Enough who won it with their dedication, organizational talents and commitment to justice and workers’ rights. They triumphed over big Republican money and the rightwing radio propaganda machine. The people defeated a sitting Supreme Court Justice!
Walker, Belling, Sykes, the WMC and the Koch brothers kicked a hornets’ nest known as genuine democracy and they felt the wrath of the stings last night.
Even if GOP subterfuge and intimidation ultimately sways the recount in their favor it’s still a tremendous victory for middle class families and working people in Wisconsin.

Posted on April 6, 2011 at 11:20pmI can in part answer that. Even some of the “non essential” personnel work revolves completely around military strength support. Myself for example (although in fairness my dept. will be working because our money is allocated directly from the Navy at the beginning of the fiscal year) I work for Naval Facilities at Great Lakes NTC. We take care of most every facet of maintenance and repair to their buildings, utilities, GoV’s, even a steam plant. We are for all intents and purposes we are considered non essential even though our job is to directly support Naval training operations. I can confirm that it has happened in the past and in some cases will happen this time if there is another shutdown. It’s not right but it does happen. But even still there are some non essentials who really are quite essential especially to military operations.
