Gov’t Study Asks: What Happens if Someone Nukes D.C.?

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Washington, DC, suffered a nuclear attack? Apparently, some of DC’s higher-ups were wondering the same thing and, like everything else they’re curious about, they decided to conduct a study.

Turns out, 10-kiloton nuke would be very, very bad for D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland (shocker, I know).

“The study—‘National Capital Region: Key Response Planning Factors for the Aftermath of Nuclear Terrorism’—simulates and prognosticates a nuclear strike at 16th and K Streets, the heart of downtown DC and only a couple blocks from the White House. The kind of spot a terrorist would want to plant a bomb,” Gizmodo’s Sam Biddle writes.

However, as easy as it is to snicker at the study’s findings (What? D.C. would be destroyed? You don’t say!), the report also “paints a horrifying, incredibly detailed radioactive portrait” of what would most likely happen should someone detonate the nation’s capitol.

“Unlike the Cold War-era bombs of yore, which were designed to erase entire capitals, a ‘smaller’ bomb like the one in question here would, hypothetically, leave survivors. What happens to us?” Biddle asks.

First, as the 2011 study shows, there would be “Three Layers of Destruction”:

The Severe Damage Zone (half mile radius): Most buildings destroyed, hazards and radiation initially prevents entry into the area; low survival likelihood.

The Moderate Damage Zone (half to 1 mile radius): Significant building damage and rubble, downed utility poles, overturned automobiles, fires, and many serious injuries. Early medical assistance can significantly improve the number of survivors.

Light Damage Zone (1 to 3 miles radius): Windows broken, mostly minor injuries that are highly survivable even without immediate medical care.

All federal building in the “severe damage zone” (e.g. The White House, Treasury Department, the National Mall, etc.) would be totally obliterated.

And then, of course, there is the dreaded “fallout.”

“The study notes fallout patterns would vary wildly with the time of year,” Biddle writes, “in April, Washington’s affluent Bethesda suburb is hit with an enormous column of radioactive dust, while through much of the rest of the year, the city’s poorer lower quadrants and Northern Virginia are exposed to aerial poison.”

As the fall 2011 report notes:

Within 10 to 20 miles of the detonation, exposures from fallout would be great enough to cause near-term (within hours) symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.

The orange area depicts exposures of 300 to 800 R for those who do not shelter soon enough. Most would experience immediate health effects (e.g., nausea and vomiting within 4 hours), and some fatalities would be likely without medical treatment For those in the dark blue area who do not take immediate shelter, outdoor exposures (>800 R) would be great enough that fatalities are likely with or without medical treatment. Evacuation is not an option in this area because fallout would arrive too quickly (within 10 minutes) to evacuate.

Which is to say, if the initial blast doesn’t get kill you, the aftermath of the attack surely will.

So the obvious question is this: how do we avoid this? The best suggestion the report comes up with sound like it was written at the height of the Cold War:

DUCK and COVER: After an unexplained dazzling flash of light, do not approach windows, and stay behind cover for at least a minute to prevent injuries from flying and falling debris, such as broken glass.

We’re pretty sure that the “duck and cover” method is just as inadequate now as it was in the 1950’s. Personally, we believe best way to prepare for a nuclear attack would be to ensure that it never happens in the first place.

But how do you do that?

      We would not miss Washington DC. We would restore the Republic. Hopefully in the heartland with a small building no bigger than a schoolhouse… If I have anything to do with it then we will follow the Constitution and NOTHING ELSE!
      Many would mourn the loss of all the people. I am not sure how many would truly grieve though. DC is the pimple on our as@ causing us great pain. It is infected and needs to go…It would be too bad for the civilians and Military living there. I know I would mourn the loss of a couple of Politicians…but only a couple….

      Take emotion out of the post-detonation evaluation and attempt to quantify the amount of money saved by the elimination of the political class. On the other hand there ARE the entire list of negatives. Help me here………….

      As with everything, there could be a dark upside to such an heinous event. In the case of the functional loss of our more and more powerful, centrally controlled, command and control government and the fact that DC is also already too loaded up with pork swilling and beltway insiders perhaps out of necessity, the country would then return to the rule of Constitutional law and the power again rightfully placed back in the hands of the states (generally speaking where it belongs anyway). I am definitely not saying such and event would be a good thing however, out of evil can come something positive.

      If it was just confined to DC, I don’t think it would bother me much, frankly.

      I’ve lost no love for our politicians. They killed that in me many many years ago.

      I love our Constitution. I love our spirit. I love our way of getting along. I love our independence.

      Government “IS” about destroying that love. On one side or the other. Which ever it takes to get what “they” want. If our government vanished into the depths of h e l l tonight, I would NOT lose a moments sleep over it. No matter who was responsible.

      My life “IS” important to ME. It “IS” not, to government. And with that kind of disrespect as a baseline, I can’t muster a good spit for them.

      We are treated with contempt and hostility at every turn. And you want me to care if DC turns into ashes? Good luck. You’re going to have to do a LOT better than that.

      I find it odd this story is getting the amount of attention since the History Channel went in depth on what would happen and how will it be handled.       I like it…

      It is time to start over with the basics. Too much corruption, too much power in too few hands. Like a computer that is so virus and worm ridden it cannot be salvaged, I think our country is now there. We need to wipe the hard disk, and reload the original O/S (US Constitution) and start over. And I would start with some new Constitutional amendments:

      The first new amendment would ban a central bank.
      The second new amendment would establish term limits (maximum two per office – total), with a 10 year term limit for Supreme court judges.
      The third would be a limit on taxation to only support those items explicitly defined in the Constitution, and then only by a flat sales tax. Want to fund something else on the federal level? You first have to authorize it with a constitutional amendment.

      With these limits set, Congress should be in session no more than two months a year, as there will not be much to do. States and counties will regain their place in the pecking order – with the City/County as most powerful, State next powerful, and the Federal Govt. the smallest and weakest.

      It could only get better. We as a country have always had good and decent people rise to an ugly occasion. None of these professional politicians will be missed- we were not supposed to have career malingerers in positions of power any way. Like the fires in Yellowstone reveal the resurgence of nature when left alone.

    I wonder if they are trying to ask us, would you miss any of them??? I honestly would not! They are all crooked lawyers to begin with! From the ear marks down to the lobbying! By the way, why don’t I get any say on where our hard earned tax dollars goes??? Not like I want it going over seas to some crazy people who really hate us to begin with! We should pull all of our money out of countries that hate us to begin with and shove the UN out of the US!

      ICBMs would do NK or Iran no good, they can be shot down easily, and those guys wouldn’t be able to produce enough of them to get any through (why do you think the soviets produced so many?). But it would be reasonably easy to float one in by boat or carried in across the southern border. It would be nearly impossible to detect or stop with out prior knowledge of the plan.

      They wouldn’t need one & they already know it. All they need is a fairly small nuke on a rocket launched from a freighter just off of either coast. Shoot it up a couple of hundred miles up just outside of our 12 mile limit & detonate it. It would put the USA back to the 1800′s or early 1900. EMP would devastate our electrical grid by blowing up transformers, relay stations & substations. It would probably disable most cars unless you have one old enough to not have electronic ignition or a computer. Many appliances, TV, Computers & cell phones would be fried or usless because the networks that they depend on would be damaged or destroyed. North Korea & Iran both know we are vulnerable to such an attack. The only hardened equipment in the USA is Military equipment & mush of that would be intact. Refrigeration, heat & other things we consider necessities, would be unusable without electricity. Our Government knows this is a threat but doesn’t think it will ever happen. That might be a mistake. Some people are already prepared for such an advent, most aren’t.

      Difficult to say who would want to nuke us. Iran, China, North Korea, Venezuela, Cuba, Pakistan, or even from within. Our government has many enemies. Most would be fine if State governments are intact and an EMP only is on east coast. Just like in One Second After, there would be more likely three EMP nukes to through the whole country in chaos. We we never know who did it. God that was a good book.

    Something to consider in this case – first of all the History channel has done this scenario many times over the last few years.

    Now then, if a terror group or rogue state were to set one off in DC the best time would be during an inaguration event, just as the new POTUS is sworn in. That would achieve the ultimate effect on the chaos of government, phychological shock (of the weapon and the act itself) plus garner the most drama out on TV as no one could be sure who survived, who is in charge and so forth.

    The probability would be very high of the strike for all intesive purposes decapitating the entire government in one shot.

      Indeed, we could see, with the usage of one device, the complete collapse of our country. Or we could see the rising from such a strike the uttermost rage of the citizenry upon those who dared to use such a device on our own territory.

      The matter of nuclear devices now – since the cold war has ended, and since that idiot Obama and his Zero Nukes plan (to dispose of all of ours) makes it a matter of when, not if, one is used.

      No, there would be no martial law because there would be no one to declare martial law. Sure, people would be panicing, but if it was just on DC, then things would calm down over time if there wasn’t a new attack. It would be our time to re-establish the Constitutional Republic we once had. And it would be a good time to modify the Constitution to get rid of the Central banks as someone else suggested! I think good times would be ahead for all of us, because then we could prosper financially, and not be slaves to our gov’t and The Fed. I don’t think anyone would mourn their loss!

    Well, the only thing that would be left is cockroaches, The silicon from Nancy Pelosi’s face, probably half of Moochells butt (it would take 2 nukes for the whole thing), I think the Teleprompter may survive, Bidens hair plugs, and of course Barney Franks Butt plug (that thing has to be able to handle anything, if it goes up his butt).
