Gov’t Thinking About Taxing You Based on How Much You Drive

The government is entertaining a new tax, one that’s based on how many miles you drive. And not only would you have to pay the tax, but you would also be required to install an electronic device in your car to track your miles, and the government would have to create a whole regulation office.

Sounds great, doesn’t it?

The plan is a part of the administration’s Transportation Opportunities Act, an undated draft of which was obtained this week by Transportation Weekly.

News of the draft follows a March Congressional Budget Office report that supported the idea of taxing drivers based on miles driven.Among other things, CBO suggested that a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax could be tracked by installing electronic equipment on each car to determine how many miles were driven; payment could take place electronically at filling stations.

Obama’s proposal seems to follow up on that idea in section 2218 of the draft bill. That section would create, within the Federal Highway Administration, a Surface Transportation Revenue Alternatives Office. It would be tasked with creating a “study framework that defines the functionality of a mileage-based user fee system and other systems.”

According to the White House, the bill is not an official proposal and hasn’t been widely circulated.

“This is not an administration proposal,” White House spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki told The Hill. “This is not a bill supported by the administration. This was an early working draft proposal that was never formally circulated within the administration, does not taken into account the advice of the president’s senior advisers, economic team or Cabinet officials, and does not represent the views of the president.”

    Good idea, then our already overloaded prisons will be filled with tax evaders using tax dollars to pay for their incarceration, makes alot of sense.

    Meter this. No agency will I willingly let modify my vehicle. They may already have most of you with you On Star and GPS systems. I know it sounds corny, but don’t most of their laws sound just as outlandish?

      They won’t make you modify your vehicle. They’ll just pass a law that no vehicles without this mileage-monitoring/older than a certain number of years may be operated on public roadways.

      You can keep your older/classic car. You just won’t be able to legally drive it.

      I said the day that OnStar c r a p came out that it was a govt tracking scheme to follow your travels. I can’t believe that millions of people bought into the baloney under the guise of “if you have an accident we can find you quickly or If you lock you kid in the car, we will open the doors.” What a crock.     this is someone at the gov figuring out that if we have more efficient cars that means lower gas tax revenues. Then some Phd form harvard thought and thought and walla a milage tax.

    First we have testing folks with user acceptance, please.

    Cash for clunkers make sense yet, can’t have old cars around wiht broken meters.

    Can’t wait for them to tell the southern boys they want to meter their trucks.

      Exactly right. They drive up the price of gas to force us to buy more efficient vehicles, then tax the miles we drive to make up the difference. Same as with electricity. They outlaw incandescent bulbs to reduce electricity use, then the electric companies raise the rates to make up the lost profits.

      All part of the UN’s Agenda 21. Force us all into “20 minute communities” so we have no need for cars and are limited to travel within our little communities. Take a look at their maps showing “human-free zones”, that include areas currently occupied by small towns, farms, ranches, etc. That‘s why Obummer’s pushing high speed rail. That‘s to carry folks between the little communities so people don’t contaminate the “human-free” zones in between.

      It wouldn’t matter because we taxpayers pay for the limo, the entourage, and all the expenses, anyway. I want to see the END of all the government employee transportation PERKS! No more government vehicles, gas cards, private gas pumps, etc., ad nauseum. Let them ALL buy and afford their own vehicles, transportation, private jets, fuel, insurance, repairs and all the other associated expenses on their OWN dime, NOT MINE! And pay the TAXES they impose. Just like the rest of us working slobs do! And that goes for ALL government employees at what ever level. Including flotus’s shopping trips to Europe.

    It sounds like another way to get at the capitalist-minded, hard-working Americans in our society. This would have devestating consequences, but that doesn’t matter because the Progressives can tout they created more jobs.

    I‘d imagine many ******** wouldn’t care because they’re perfectly happy being a lame professor sharing faux-life experiences at a university riding their bike to and from work. I always loved my professors who never worked a day at a real job telling me how much they knew about the industry.

    Just another way to “spread the wealth around” – A new liine on the tax forms will give the “poor” a refundable transportation tax credit…

      instead of cash for clunkers, why didnt we have cash for naural gas conversion? even older cars that were paid for could be converted! instead of taking a new car-loan for a new car? battery powered cars that go 80 miles on a charge? how many laptop batteries caught fire? we had that with pintos catching fire when hit in back! see it was for big banks to sell loans and broke auto co, who wasted their money on surplus white and blue collar employees! so the gov. could collect all the sales tax on new cars! see, nat-gas conversion would highly reduce need for importing oil! also we have alot of natural gas here in the u.s.!

      This story began in the Pacific NW a couple of weeks ago because they said they were losing so much money do to the citizenry driving hybrid vehicles. They were proposing a $100 per year fee for hybrid owners because they weren’t buying gas.

      Soon non-smokers, non-drinkers, and pedestrians could face similar fees. Notice that these are FEES, not Taxes.

      Actually that may not be far away. Consider that the bigger (fatter) the person the more we might breathe and so they apply a tax based on weight because we consume more than thinner people. Very realistic in the near future.

      I believe the part you are talking about is Washington State or Orgeon seeking the charge on those who own hybrids; there are also articles in, I think it is Montana, where they are already studying the prospect of taxing you on the milage you drive in state, seperate from any federal milage taxation.

      I was not aware that driven miles created income. It does not, unless you have a commercial driver license. I wouled be penalized for driving to the grocery store, to meetings, to a friend’s house.

      The government has absolutely run out of things to tax, and the Progressives STILL cannot stop spending!

      The gas tax is plenty enough tax on the miles we drive.

      This is simply an excuse to put tracking devices in our cars to prepare us for the chips that are eventually to be implanted in our hands.

      I am prepared to die–and I have thought of this long and hard–I am prepared to die before I will accept three things coming in the U.S. if we do NOT change course.

      1) Smart grid allowing the government to control my appliances and namely how warm or cool I can be. I will politely ask the first person who comes to install a device that monitors what appliances I am using and giving the government authority to turn them off or on at will to leave. If they refuse or come back with help me or them one will die right there.

      2) I refuse to pay the fine imposed under Obamacare. It will be me or them when they come to get me. I will not go willingly nor will I sit idly by during some assest forfeiture because of an IRS levy on my property for refusing to pay the unconstitutional $1500 fine. .

      3) This mileage tax (paying for my own tracking tax). I will refuse to pay this tax if it is passed. I am prepared to accept death before I accept this tax.

      I encourage all Americans to refuse to peacefully go along with these three things because I can assure you that if you do, we will have tracking chips in us within 10 to 15 yrs.

      Also, the sad thing here is who do you think will enforce these regulations? Will it be the Communist Radicals who are in control of Washington and are coming up with these New World Order Elite Controlled Utopia (for them–sucks for us)? Who will install the “Smart Thermostat”? The Communists or the $40k a year power company worker? Who will auction off your house if you do not pay the $1500 Obamacare Fine? Will it be the Apollo Alliance who wrote the bill? Or will it be the realtor the IRS contracts to hold the auction? If you drive “illegal” miles will it be the thieves in Washington coming to take you to jail? Or will it be the local police and sheriff’s who are supposed to keep you safe?

      I encourage all people to really think about how just what they may be asked to do really is. I will not live under Communism. Its sickening that these cowards will hide behind good people but that is what they do.

      I plan on refusing communism and encourage every American to do the same. What happens if nobody pays the $1500 fine, or everybody just drives anyway without the tracking device on their cars? What happens if everyone turns away–at gunpoint–the power worker who comes to install the smart thermostat giving the government control of your home’s appliances? It can’t be 1 in 10,000 it has to be 1 in 10, or 1 in 5. They can’t jail us all though they very well might kill some of us hoping others will tow the line after that.

      Don’t they already tax us by how much we drive? The more we drive, the more gas we use. The more gas we use, the more gas we buy. Each gallon is charged a tax. Why am I being DOUBLE taxed for the amount I drive?

      This falls in line with a U.N. directive that member countries pull in their urban sprawl, and concentrate people in re-vitalized urban areas. I promise you, go to the U.N. site and read it for yourselves.

      This is a way to tax all those people stupid enough to buy the 40-100 mile per gallon vehicles. Ah Ha they may not get you in the price of your gasoline but they’ll make up for it by taxing the miles driven. Of course they can also keep up with where you go and when. COMMUNIST!!!!!!!!!!!

      If this gets any traction, I’ll quit being a musician. Bars and clubs have been paying less and less to bands due to higher taxes and Obama’s stupid smoking ban, which has caused business to dwindle. So I’m earning less money for a gig, while paying more money for drumsticks and heads because shipping costs of these goods has risen with the gas prices. And now I might start getting taxed even further when I drive to the gig??? The fact this if even a discussion makes me sick. This country is getting more unbearable by the week.

      Yeah it began in the the NW but it was Oregon that started the per mile tax and it was rejected by the population in a referendum I think. Now our Democratic Gov realizing that Hybrids and high mileage cars reduce the purchase of gasoline, which in turn reduced the amount of money coming to the state for its social programs etc. She now has to reduce spending and maybe more with the price of gasoline going higher forcing more and more people to spend less on sales tax items and gasoline taxed fuel, where will it end???

      I think we could finally find out what is actually going on in Washington if we installed a wireless camera and microphone on every senator, supreme court justice, and the president. That would probably solve our debt crisis right there, once they knew every word they ever speak, and every place they ever go will be instantly available on the internet. TOO INTRUSIVE?       I have said it once and I will say it again. And gas tax or mileage tax that is a solution for raising revenues of bankrupt States because of their wasteful spending on entitlement programs and supporting illegal foreign invaders simply plunges the middle class into poverty and the lower class even lower. It targets all working people especially in rural areas that have to drive much further than a guy that has public transportation, a bicycle or quick ride to his job in the city. It also is a way to push those in the country and more conservative rural areas to urbanize and be diluted by the liberals and foreigners in the big cities which add to liberal and foreign influence at election time. No more TAXES! Kick out the millions of thieving illegals and their ancwhore babies from this country first!

      with GPS capabilities im sure. soon they wil be able to tell when and where you were speeding running a stop sign etc. then before you can register your vehicle you must pay the tickets. BE PREPARED COLLECT: food, water (filters), ammo. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

      my brother and i have converted a 1988 suzuki samuri to electric instead of hydrocarbons. i use this car to drive to work or run to lowes its an intown grocery getter. you can build one yourself. lets see the administration try to get me to pay at the pump. you do not need a goverment car company ran by a bunch of union thugs. the stock holders be damned….. the price of a gallon of gas $3.68 last night. it cost me about $7.00 a month to charge my battery pack.

      If I drive 500 miles per month, and my neighbor drives 50 miles…I should be expected to pay MORE (highway related) taxes than my neighbor. The problem is that this tax will HAMMER those who travel to deliver goods, repair appliances or technical equipment, and those who travel to provide medical care. This is just ANOTHER ridiculous, blood sucking by our “elected” officials. God bless America. May WE get our heads extricated from our rectums!
