Gov’t Will Force You to Watch Two New Ads Everytime You Turn on a DVD

In the wake of the uproar against anti-piracy legislation proposed in Congress and crackdowns by the U.S. government to protect copyright holders, you’ll now have to sit through two new ads before you make to your featured presentation.
(Related: ‘Chilling’?: Feds can seize any foreign .com run by a company on U.S. soil)
That is, you won’t be able to skip over the new FBI, Homeland Security Investigations and National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center ads on the latest DVDs or Blu-Ray discs.

(Image via Ars Technica)
Ars Technica has more on the 10-second ads that will run back-to-back:
An ICE spokesman tells me that the two screens will “come up after the previews, once you hit the main movie/play button on the DVD. At which point the movie rating comes up, followed by the IPR Center screen shot for 10 secs and then the FBI/HSI anti-piracy warning for 10 secs as well. Neither can be skipped/fast forwarded through.”
The idea isn’t to deter current pirates, apparently (the new scheme requires all legal purchasers to sit through 20 seconds of warnings each time they pop in a film, but will be totally absent from pirated downloads and bootlegs). It’s to educate everyone else. As ICE Director John Morton announced in a statement yesterday, “Law enforcement must continue to expand how it combats criminal activity; public awareness and education are a critical part of that effort.”

(Image via Ars Technica)
Ars Technica reports six major movie studios will begin using the ads as soon as next week.
“Our nation’s film and TV business is critical to our economy,” ICE Director John Morton said in a statement. “Its creativity and imagination have made American entertainment one of our greatest exports over the decades, but criminals are increasingly engaging in new forms of digital theft. Law enforcement must continue to expand how it combats criminal activity; public awareness and education are a critical part of that effort.”
On the bright side, this gives you one last opportunity to take a bathroom break or finish up popping popcorn before your desired flick begins.

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 2:15amWhat an inane waste of time, money and effort. The esteemed Department of Homeland Security is involved in this? Really? Please, tell me more about how individual piracy is even remotely a matter of national security.
I don’t really buy movies, but I encourage anyone with common sense to boycott the movie industry until things get better. They are trying to hold onto a dying business model through lobbying and government regulation. If you really think about it, if someone is dead set on illegally pirating a movie or any other form of entertainment, a silly, meaningless warning is not going to stop them. This changes nothing and only adds to further government waste and inefficiency.

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 7:56amI agree. Hollywood is vomiting out the most vile poison in history in a flood covering the globe. They inflame the middle eastern peoples, poison the worlds children with filth from the very depths of hell itself. They use their great wealth to destroy a once great American way of life. They have been promoting communism and working to destroy freedom for nearly a full century. Satan has had no greater ally in all of history. McCarthy saw it and tried to stop the destruction, only to be demonized by their swaying of public opinion so much it has made Him a figure history loves to hate. A history they largely wrote themselves. Reagan saw it and quit acting, changed parties, and became one of our greatest leaders. The point is long past where buying or renting movies has become an act which will be considered in the white throne judgment since supporting the industry implies you are complicit in the destruction of our future, our children, our once great way of life. Feeding these monsters is an act against those you love and their future, even against the God of heaven Himself. All will account for every bit of support they have given the forces of darkness and little is darker than what they represent. They spend billions to support those who would enslave us all. Satan comes in with a flood of lies and nowhere is this flood more evident than in every word they speak. The media is also a part of this flood of lies, just another tool of the great enemy of these the last days.

They target the wrong people who really commited piracy ?
The person who downloaded it ? No
The person who hosted it ? No
The person who ripped it and posted it ? Ding Ding Ding here’s a clue
If the movie industry started their own website that provided new releases on demand movies something like a Netflix site they might make a few more bucks people want to watch what they want when they want in the comfort of their home and not a theater.

They dug in and went after those pirate’s, they changed their unsecured business model to one that is secure at a large cost to them but a well thought out investment, a lesson MPAA and RIAA should review. Part of their strategy was lowing subscriptions costs, to a point is was cheaper subscribe vs pirate it. Hollywood should learn from this and reduce those blue-ray prices and introduce streaming with HDCP but it won’t happen, too much unioniz
