Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia: It Is ‘Necessary to Destroy All the Churches of the Region’

The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia has made some statements that have religious freedom critics bouncing between scratching their heads and curling up in horror. Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh recently announced that it is “necessary to destroy all the churches of the region.“ The ”region” he was referring to, of course, is the Arabian Peninsula (including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman).

Christians throughout the Middle East, of course, have responded sharply, finding themselves dismayed that such a statement could be made.

Russia Today (RT) has more about these comments:

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah made the controversial statement in a response to a question from a Kuwaiti NGO delegation. A Kuwaiti parliamentarian had called for a ban on the construction of new churches in February, but so far the initiative has not been passed into law. The NGO, called the Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage, asked the Sheikh to clarify what Islamic law says on the matter.

The Grand Mufti, who is the highest official of religious law in Saudi Arabia, as well as the head of the Supreme Council of Islamic Scholars, cited the Prophet Mohammed, who said the Arabian Peninsula is to exist under only one religion.

The Sheikh went on to conclude that it was therefore necessary for Kuwait, being a part of the Arabian Peninsula, to destroy all churches on its territory.

ArabianBusiness.com reported very similar details:

Speaking to a delegation in Kuwait, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, stressed that since the tiny Gulf state was a part of the Arabian Peninsula, it was necessary to destroy all of the churches in the country, Arabic media have reported.

Saudi Arabia’s top cleric made the comment in view of an age-old rule that only Islam can be practiced in the region.

In February, RT reports that Osama al-Munawar, a member of the Kuwaiti Parliament, was planning to submit official legislation that would remove all churches from the country. He later clarified that any church currently in existence would be allowed to stay, but that new houses of worship that were not Islamic in nature would not be allowed to be constructed.

What’s most interesting in this case is that al-Sheikh is calling for the houses of worship to be destroyed — a radical ideal to say the least. The proposal in Kuwait — a nation that he is not a resident of — calls, as stated, for a ban on any new buildings, not to destroy current houses of worship.

Elliot Abrams, Senior Fellow for Middle Eastern Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, though, explains why the Grand Mufti’s statement is unsurprising:

…the reported statement by the Grand Mufti came as no surprise to me. Nor is it a surprise, considering his interpretation of Islam, that the religious police make it so difficult for Christians even to worship privately, in their homes. In a better world, the UN Human Rights Council would be denouncing these violations of freedom of religion, as would the whole Organization of Islamic Cooperation—given that Saudi Arabia is the only one of its 57 member countries that absolutely bars churches. In the world in which we actually live, denunciations of the Saudis for this are almost non-existent.

In Saudi Arabia, Islam is the only permitted religion and there are no houses of worship for individuals who subscribe to different faiths.

Even if we could be energy independent (which we can), we still have allies who depend on Saudi oil.       I think it is amazing how Christians are shocked – That is like saying the Bible is Shocking – The Bible told us this would happen as clearly as when the Bible told a Savor would be born – that Jesus would die for our sins and would be Crucified.

      And the mosques keep popping up here in the U.S. left and right. Foreigners are buying up commercial space everywhere. And they are free to do so. While Christianity is mocked here and its places of worship defamed here and destroyed abroad by a people who HATE and live to HATE, no one defends the Christians or the Church. The only one worldwide who still speaks for it is the Pope and our President is seething to virulently continue his attack on the Catholic Church and Christianity. I don’t even think Obama took his oath on an actual Bible. Maybe it was, but it’s just a book to unbelievers like him and this Mufi.

The Bush family has made millions off their association with the royal family even though they are the main money-men behind international terror. But none of us are innocent. We get 12% of our crude from that country. We all no doubt have some of Saudi Arabia in our cars, boats, lawn mowers, and motorcycles.

      I had a good laugh over the responses from the others to your question!

      As far as I know, a mufti is some sort of regional leader in the muslim faith.

      Or, it is a beverage made by filtering hot water through a towel worn on the head for several weeks in very hot weather without cleaning it. Has a sort of “sweat” flavor. That’s “sweat”, not “sweet”.

    The Grand Mufti was being honest about what Islam teaches, the death, subjugation and/or eradication of all but Muslims.
    The deaths of Christians in the middle east and in Africa does not make the news.

      If Islam is planning on America being its next conquest, they would be wise to study history a little better. America, being a country comprised mostly of immigrants and their descendents, tends to look weak and corrupt to outsiders who look at only a small fraction of “America” and conclude that the entire country is that way, and much of the information they use comes from movies, TV, and journalists and their pretenders. Because those who produce movies, TV, journlistic opinions, rants and raves, tend to distort what America is, outsiders believe they can conquer an America made up of such weak, wicked and stupid people as they see through their terribly distorted lenses. Historically, however, once we are attacked, we band together for our common defense, the craziness and crazies so common in peacetime are brushed aside, and the “silent majorities” step forward and demonstrate what America is really about. Islamic extremists, from the left, middle and right, will continue to push us into a corner until we once again show what history has proven time and again: America is a country which stands for liberty, and freedom of individuals, which tends to be a messy, sometimes ugly philosophy to actually implement and practice. But it is a wonderful thread of gold which knits us all together when the fundamentals we believe in are in enough danger that the reluctant heroes among us finally say “ENOUGH!” and crush the enemies of democracy under their feet.

They are just checking to see if they have solidified their hold enough yet to get away with it now or if they should wait a little longer. The Arabian Peninsula is just the beginning. This is the plan. The only question is when they can pull it off.

      Crusade was a response to the brutal and bloody treatment of non-muslims in the Holy Lands. It was a response by Christendom to the process of Jihad be employed by muslims all over the region. And, to the muslims, The Crusades were a minor historical bump on the way to establishing their Caliphate.

      The muslims in Arabia are the most deeply deceived on all the planet. They sit at the center of the global Jihad. They control Mecca, singularity of evil that drives the Jihad.

      They have presided over a massive deception 1,400 years old. They have raised up a false idol, Allah, and presented it as the God of the Bible. They have committed great sins against all people of Earth behind this single deception. Massive sins. Sins on an epic, apocalyptic scale.

      We can begin “The Second Coming” simply by standing up to Jihad and providing safe passage to the tens of millions silently awaiting the day they can apostate and get as far away from Islam as possible.

    I have said it before but the Church thrives under persecution; and, the world of Islam hasn’t seen anything yet when the Church rises up and uses the power it has in the person of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ said that “the gates of Hell would not prevail against” the Church. The only problem is that the Church in this nation doesn‘t see the danger and probably won’t until the pernicious evil that Islam is is pounding on their doors. Not this believer! My God is greater than theirs. Theirs goes dark every month and mine lives and abides forever. Theirs wants to kill the “infidel” and mine wants all men to be saved and come unto the knowledge of the truth. The road to the end of the Book may not be easy at all, but the good news is that we win.

      Notice, the Earth is defiled by destroying God’s covenant and breaking His laws- not by global warming. This evil will spread across the globe, unless we have a major awakening as was seen in Nineveh.

      You are right- but our God is very powerful. We need to trust Him with all of our heart, placing full confidence in the saving Grace of Christ, and His protection and strength.

      We wait upon the Lord now, so that others will have the opportunity to hear the Good News before the end, when all must stand before God in their own sin. But Jesus has already stood in for us, and paid the price in full!
