Grandmother Carol Field Admits Starting 18 Fires Across Maine for Attention | Pleads Guilty

Carol Field, a 66-year-old grandmother and former nurse, has admitted to setting 18 fires across Maine in what is being reported as a desperate cry for attention.

According to County District Attorney Angela Cannon, the grandmother said when questioned that “all her life she cared for everyone else, and nobody cared about her or paid attention to her.

She reportedly faces five counts of arson in Cumberland County and another five in York County, after setting fire to, among other places, a garage, a barn, and a 177-year-old church.

Though the fires allegedly caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage, no injuries were reported.

J.P. DeGrinney, Field’s court-appointed attorney, questioned the validity of Field’s confession to all 18 fires. He said she was subjected to a prolonged interview in which her answers may not have been voluntary. The suppression of her statements would have been the subject of a hearing next week.

After her arrest, Field went to the state-run Riverview Psychiatric Center in Augusta for evaluation and treatment. Although she suffers from anxiety and depression, she was essentially given a clean bill of heath in terms of criminal responsibility, Superior Court Justice Roland Cole said during the proceeding.

Field is a former nurse who worked most recently at a sandwich shop. Her prior criminal history includes convictions for shoplifting groceries, furnishing liquor to a minor and impersonating a police officer, more than 30 years ago.

Field did not speak at any length during the hearing. She answered clearly in response to procedural questions from Cole, and as she said “guilty” to each of the six counts. [Emphasis added]

Field could be incarcerated for two years for the crimes, according to reports.  While arson carries a maximum penalty of thirty years, because no one was injured, her sentence will likely be much shorter.

      “Though the fires ALLEGEDLY caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage, NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.

      Because when you are “rich” hundreds of thousands of dollars isn’t very painful, a scratch really…
      Someone burns down your $200-300k family home with everything in it that cannot be replaced and granny gets a mental pass because “no one was really hurt…”

      I know exactly what you mean. I take care of a handicapped son, who is now 22 so I’ve been doing it for 22 years. I sometimes feel like there’s no one to take care of me, then I pick myself up by my bootstraps and go on. I don’t light fires and cause damage so someone will take care of me. Stick her in prison where they take care of her….tell her what to wear, what to think, etc.

      95% of women think they’re some kind of queen when they hit their mid-60s. It’s all too common.
      I’ve taken care old family members most of my adult life. The old guys ask very little, appreciate what you do for them and eventually quietly just die. The women on the other hand almost always become some selfish beast that demands attention and believes they have it so bad. They will lie to other family members to try and draw some sympathy, even if you wait on them constantly. They will go out of their way to make everything you do for them more difficult. They will have nothing good to say about their care givers, male or female, but will go on and on about how wonderful some family member is, even though that person has basically abandoned them. I feel for anyone having to take care of an old woman.

      Teddrunk, you’re right. They will walk around and carry on conversations with pictures of relatives, too. As the saying goes; Old men talk about the weather, and old women talk about old men. When I visited my grandfather in a rest home, the old women would walk around yelling, carrying dolls and stealing from others, most from the men. I do feel sorry for old people. If I’m lucky, I’ll be there some day.

      Southern Maine is well developed with many opportunities
      to engage in activities that would fill the hole left by retirement
      there are many organizations that would have welcomed her with open arms
      hospice elderly centers ect to be so selfish that she acted out by starting fires
      eliminates all sympathy i might have felt for her she needs to be locked up for good.
