Granny Get Your Gun: 65-Year-Old Woman Thwarts Robbery Using Her Pistol and 2 Rounds

A 65-year-old woman fired two rounds from a handgun at five masked men after they attempted to rob her jewelry store in Garden Grove, Calif. on Sunday. Her shots sent the men fleeing in such a panic that they literally tripped over each other trying to exit the store, KTLA reports.
The woman then went running after them down the street, still gripping her pistol. And all of it was caught on surveillance camera.

In fact, the would-be robbers were in such a frenzy from her gunfire that their white getaway SUV actually left three of the suspects behind. They were later picked up roughly a block and a half away.
Police are still looking for the suspects.
According to KCAL, the five men entered the store wearing masks while some wore hoods. Police have confirmed that at least two of the men had guns.

Lt. Jeff Nightengale of the Garden Grove Police Department told KCAL that three of the men were also carrying pillowcase, most likely to carry their loot. But they never got that far — and they certainly didn’t expect the old woman to fight back so fiercely.
“They demanded everyone get down on the ground. They asked for valuables inside the store,” Nightengale said.
Moments later, the 65-year-old owner whipped out her handgun and shot two rounds at the group of thugs, sending them scrambling out the front door.

“She felt her life was in jeopardy. She felt it was appropriate action to protect those people in the store,” Nightengale added.
The store owner declined to comment on her heroic actions.
Police say the suspects could be the same men who tried to rob another jewelry store at the Asian Garden Mall in Westminster one day later.
In that heist, the store owner shot a suspect in the face.
Garden Grove police say it may be the same crew, but they caution store owners about defending themselves with guns.

This is an idea case for that… an armed robbery by 5 men, and let’s say one is killed by the owner of the store. The remaining 4 perps would be charged with murder. Also, we have a good Samaritan law that would protect the owner from legal consequences if she could say she was trying to protect someone in her store. If she was protecting me and accidentally shot you, no criminal charges for her. The whole thing about don’t use guns is just trying to prevent the public from defending themselves. They are saying “Just let the police take care of this”. When seconds count the police are minutes away.

And trust me, buck shot is the only way to go when we’re talking personal defense. And even if you go with smaller caliber buckshot your spread isn’t likely to increase by more than an inch or two. There is absolutely no way in hell that you’re going to hit 5 guys at the same time even if they are having a group hug, and even hitting two is as likely as not.

While it‘s true that buckshot has decent penetrating power and it’s possible for it to enter a second target after it exits the first, it‘s unlikely that it’s going to retain enough kinetic energy to do significant damage to the secondary target. There was NO purchase of an “assualt rifle”. The AR 15 is a semi automatic weapon… pull the trigger goes bang once. Accurately classified, “assault weapons” in the “rifle category are capable of selective fire…. fully automatic or perhaps 3 round bursts… but an assault rifle would not be semi automatic. The AR does NOT stand for assault rifle. It stands for Armalite, the initial developer of the rifle. Secondly, 6000 rounds is not a large purchase for those who shoot regularly at the range and represents a bulk pricing advantage for regular users. By comparison, a government agent may shoot that many rounds in practice in a couple of days.
Please try to post factual information rather than distortions. You will have a greater impact if you are accurate factually as opposed to making emotionally laden statements for impact. You sound like Bill O’Reilly who has no clue about guns and accurately describing them.

Your knee-jerk response is completely misplaced. The police didn‘t say that store owners shouldn’t arm themselves. Advising caution with one’s weapon is not the same as advising not having the weapon at all. The police officer was merely reminding gun owners that they should be careful when making the decision to shoot because they are responsible for where the bullets end up down range. For example, if the old lady had hit an innocent bystander in her effort to defend herself she would be held accountable for that.
