Greeces Descent Into Chaos: Resignations, Violenct Protests, and Austerity

Greece’s future in the eurozone grew increasingly precarious Friday as violence erupted on the streets of Athens and dissent grew among its lawmakers after European leaders demanded deeper spending cuts.

“Violence has broken out again, with hooded youths throwing stones and police firing grenades in Syntagma square,” Business Insider’s Simone Foxman reported earlier this morning.

The protests, of course, have been organized by unions unhappy with the announcement that public sector jobs will get the ax.

The country’s beleaguered coalition government promised Friday to push through the tough new austerity measures and rescue a crucial €130 billion ($170 billion) bailout deal, as six members of the Cabinet resigned.

Prime Minister Lucas Papademos promised to “do everything necessary” to ensure parliament passes the new austerity measures that would slap Greeks with a minimum wage cut during a fifth year of recession.

The attempt to push through austerity measures has been met with massive push back.

In fact, according to a letter obtained by Reuters, Greek police unions have called for the arrest of EU and International Monetary Fund officials. The crime? Daring to impose austerity measures and threatening union jobs.

The letter states:

Since you are continuing this destructive policy, we warn you that you cannot make us fight against our brothers. We refuse to stand against our parents, our brothers, our children or any citizen who protests and demands a change of policy…

We warn you that as legal representatives of Greek policemen, we will issue arrest warrants for a series of legal violations…such as blackmail, covertly abolishing or eroding democracy and national sovereignty.

Of course, they would need a judge to sign off on the warrants (which wouldn’t seem very likely), but the threat is still there nevertheless.

“It is absolutely necessary to complete the effort that began almost two years to consolidate public finances, restore competitiveness and economic recovery,” Papademos told an emergency Cabinet meeting.

Debt-stricken Greece needs the bailout money before a €14.5 billion bond deadline on March 20 and strike a vital debt-relief deal with bond investors.

He said the bailout and a related debt-reduction deal with private creditors would return Greece to growth next year, and deliver 4.5 percent primary surplus in 2012 – better than an earlier official prediction of 1.1 percent of gross domestic product.

“A disorderly default would cast our country into a catastrophic adventure. It would create conditions of uncontrollable economic chaos and social explosion,” he warned.

“Greeks’ standard of living in the event of a disorderly default would collapse, and the country would be swept into a deep vortex of recession, instability, unemployment and penury. These developments would lead, sooner or later, to exit from the euro.”

Earlier Friday, a small right-wing party in Papademos’ coalition said it would not back the new measures and four of its officials in the cabinet resigned, including the country’s transport minister.

Two Socialists cabinet members have also quit.

Greece has promised to approve the new austerity measures by late Sunday, despite deep public resentment.

Violent clashes broke out in front of parliament earlier in the day, amid mass protests organized by unions, which launched a 48-hour general strike.

      More and more of our younger generations of citizens will not and do not understand all of the “old” people talking about freedom. Freedom to them is playing Wii whenever they want to. It will seem unfathomable to them that maybe more of their “neighbor’s” blood will be shed in order to ensure that the United States remains free. For if we are not free the right to worship God will be a long forgotten memory…..for starters.

      In fact, it implicitly says that the federal government only has the powers specifically GIVEN to it by the States. I’m waiting for a State to really get their toes stepped on by the Fed. I will not at all be surprised to begin hearing talk of secession.

      There are already more and more States working on legislation to tell the Fed they will no longer listen to them nor accept what they say as law. What the fed gonna do…arrest a whole State?

      The current administration seems to think they have enough power to do anything they want so we’ll see.

The Federal Gov’t has powers only as they are granted to them by the consent of the States and the people. perhaps you skipped over amendments 9 & 10 and apprently the whole entire Constitution itself. The Constitution spells out what the Fed can do. Anything not specifically spelled out is the express right of the people and the states. pay close attention to the order..9 comes before 10 so even the states get their rights from the people. And we the people get our rights from God Almighty . Here is the order of things God, people, government. Contrary to the meme of the left the order is not Gov’t, people, God.

      Regarding ENCINOM’s comment: Sure, the Feds have supremacy over the states, but only at the point of a gun. The states got together and formed the Fed. Gov, which since Lincoln has evolved into a monster. The states did not dump all their sovereignty into DC and walk away and hope for the best. The Feds took it by force of arms, and dares any of them to try to take it back. Until we have governors and local officials willing to again say NO to Washington, we all live as slaves.

      Be careful what you wish for… It is quite possible that the Progressive Liberals (and that DOES include RINOs) see a different situation where they feel they can’t cut for fear of social unrest. I suspect that you and I see the same picture: “Stop spending now before we get to where Greece is” but I fear that the Progressive Left sees “Use their anger to further our agenda!” After all, Barry and Pigloski support OWS which is nothing but thinkly veiled attempt to destroy the free market system.

      Not defending the OWS, but it seems to me that they could be the next bubble to bust. Not OWS itself, but the students that make up such a large portion of it. Tuition hikes in the last 20 or so years have gone through the roof, and the courses taught do not involve hi demand occupations. Liberal arts, political science and etc… are not really hi demand occupations, and not many are able to earn enough in the field to be able to repay the loans that are handed out like candy. Although I’m Canadian, I worked like crazy to pay off my loan, eventually had to declare bankruptcy. U.S students don’t have that option. Must pay or else… There must be a few OWSers who drank the koolaide and are now having to face the music that they are unable to repay massive amounts of student loan debt. Their ability to repay has been removed from them, by the very ideologies they were indoctrinated with in their training, and that fact must infuriate them. So the education bubble may be bursting, just not as fast or obviously as the housing bubble, financial bubble, or the dot com bubble.

    Last night I was watching a “The Nightly Business Report” on PBS where the President of a Wall Street Stock firm was being interviewed. The Stock guy expressed great concerning over the events happening in both Europe and The US economies. The interviewer asked , “Is it time to buy gold yet?”, and the Wall Street guy replied, “No, bottled water, food, shotgun shells, and scotch whiskey”. From the look on his face, I would say that “HE WASN’T KIDDING”.

    So, union leaders. What are you going to do when your nation defaults and the checks stop because their is no money? I ask the same question to the government employees and the pensioners. National default and penury are right around the corner. Where are the innovators and cheerleaders for the common good who will find a way through the mess and exhort their countrymen to put a shoulder to the wheel. Where are the people who refuse to acknowledge defeat and will do what it takes to rebuild a money-making economy for Greece? Sadly, there don’t seem to be many at all. It is easier to throw a tantrum, hold their collective breath and demand that mommy Europe give them a $100 billion euro lollipop.

    Even more sad, this is what lies ahead for us if we fail to force our government off its reckless spending.

      The people of Greece and other countries being dragged down by socialism are moving towards a truly miserable existence. Our country is not far behind if we don’t fix the problem now. Please when the riots start, wear a bright red shirt with a picture of a Molotov cocktail on it.

This has nothing to do with people or skills that could be obtained by any reasonably intelligent 10 year old demanding jobs where, whether or not they produce anything with any real market value, they are entitled to be paid just for their efforts or where people take no responsibility for the direction of their lives because they long ago handed that chore over to their nanny state. This has nothing to do with top heavy government producing nothing of value instead simply recycling value minus their cut of course!       You don’t really address my point about the Euro. It was a sham of a currency, to be sure. I mean, to naively but into the rationale that all European countries could be considered equal; of intelligence, motivation, drive, education, etc., holy just fell of the turnip truck, Batman!!!

      Well, like usual, the people that pay the bills in Europe have to cover for the progressive elitists that completely screwed them over.

      STRTGY 101 Many stand with you. We understand the meaning of “give me liberty or give me death” and it actually has meaning in our lives. The ones like Molo will be begging for help and support as they are being stalked and eaten by the hungry hordes.

      Of all the things our government will do to us it will not succeed in disarming us. That is the absolute, final line in the sand if that line is not drawn even before then. With 200 million plus weapons in these United States and much more ammunition we will not go quietly into the night and allow OUR Country to be taken from us by force.

      I hope and pray this never happens but those of us who truly love this Country will stand up for it.

      Molotov cocktail would be one of the early casualties if and when a true revolution begins. It’s people like him that are screaming everyday about the inequalities that are present today in the U.S.. It’s people like him that make up the Occupy Wall St. cry babies. It’s also people like him that NEVER served in the military in a combat situation or any other position. He doesn’t understand the resolve of those of us that have sacrificed for our families, friends, and neighbors to protect deadbeats like him. When all hell breaks loose, it will be people like yourself and other true patriots, that will shoulder-to-shoulder on the frontline. Thank you for your service and sacrifice for our country.
