Greece Proposes Border Fence to Stem Tide of Illegal Immigrants; EU Says Not So Fast

Greece has decided to build a 12-kilometer fence along its border with neighboring Turkey — an attempt to curb illegal immigration into the European Union.
According to Greece, the influx of immigrants has taken a burdensome toll on the country’s economy. Greek Public Order Minister Christos Papoutsis announced the decision, calling it a “necessary” step as the country “can no longer tolerate such high numbers” of illegal immigrants.
The proposed fence will be built in one of the busiest thoroughfares for illegal traffic, along the country’s only overland border with Turkey. According to the European Union border control agency Frontex, in October 2010, this area saw an average of 245 people illegally crossing into Greece every day. The other areas of the Greece-Turkey border are covered by a river where illegal migrants usually cross into the country on inflatable boats.
The Communist Party of Greece has joined international humanitarian groups in denouncing the measure, calling it “barbaric.” Activists also have expressed concern that the fence will prohibit asylum seekers and others looking for safety.
The proposed border fence is a “strong measure,” says Kalliopi Stefanaki, the UNHCR protection officer for Greece, but every country has a right to protect its own borders, she says.
“We agree that Greece in entitled to enhance security at its borders in any way it sees fit,” she said. “What we are concerned about is that the rights of those who want to cross this, or any other border, to request protection are protected.”
Meanwhile, the European Union has approved the border fence as a “short-term measure,” but is dismissing plans for a permanent fence:
An estimated 90 percent of all illegal immigrants who enter the European Union do so through Greece.
Daniel Esdras, the head of the Greek office for the International Organization for Migration, says the border is not Greece’s to protect. “The idea of building more walls around a Fortress Europe is outdated,” he says. “These are not just Greece’s borders, but also those of the European Union. And people will carry on trying to reach a better life unless conditions in their home countries are improved. This is something governments should together be focusing on.”
No official timeline on the border fence‘s construction has been given and Greece’s Public Order Ministry says the proposal is still at an initial stage.

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 12:03amOf course the moronic Commies would call a country protecting its border from illegal incursion and its countries attempt to curb the mis-use and misappropriation of resources by those who are not legally contributing into the country or being a productive part of it…
This from the Commies who shot and killed anyone sneaking into their countries or trying to flee their countries…
For all those ignorant little 20 somethings out there who weren’t around to watch live news broadcasts of Germans trying to flee Soviet occupied Eastern Germany to make it to the free part of Germany and the freedoms from Communist oppression….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwQsTzGkbiY
Escaping Communist North Korea…

Another product of Communism:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAQE7kDwPZY
If you thought the Nazi’s were brutal killers, the Soviets made them look like amateurs…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GTVV6XHfP4
So all you young, naive kiddies out there who are remotely buying into this whole “revolution” nonsense, that “I collect baseball cards and I’m a Communist” crap and the other nonsense being shoveled around like cow s**t, understand that when ALL of these communist countries first started out, it was all the same way…. people offering you everything your heart desired – Justice, Equality, Hope, Change, and so on….
EVERY and I mean EVERY one of these countries, in the end delivered on their promises, but their vision of
Justice – meant that those who obeyed, could live – that was their justice.
Equality – everyone would be poor, they got what they wanted.
Hope – you could hope all you wanted, you’d get nothing for it, but you could hope all you wanted.
Change – oh, you got your change alright, everything changed, just not the way you were conned into thinking it was supposed to change.
So if you actually think, working a low pay starter job and having to work your way up, earn your way up and strive for what you want isn’t fair, then Communism is for you: You work or your killed.
You want Equality – you think you should make a six figure salary right out of high school, get a car, fully paid college, charge up credit cards and not have to pay — Communism is for you – you‘ll be equal because you’ll have nothing like everyone else, you’ll go to the same substandard school like all others, same substandard healthcare, same poor existence and life – enjoy! You get what you want.
So before you jump onto the “Revolution” bandwagon, go read up on the decades of chumps before you who all did the same thing, all fought against business, the govt, the hardworkers…. caused chaos and destruction because they all wanted a change, they wanted more…. go read up on every one of those “Revolutions” and see the pathetic misery those “Revolutionaries” and their descendants are now living in.
You want a Revolution, its not about taking to the streets, setting fires, breaking windows and causing chaos… its about looking in the mirror and looking at your self and having a personal revolution – a personal revelation – time for change is within yourself. If want more? Then work harder, can’t go to college, you may have to put off a year, two, or more. Take a few classes here and there, work in entry level positions in the field you want to become your career and get some basic exposure and hands on experience. Instead of looking to buy the latest cellphone, ipad or Xbox, maybe you look to squirrel away that cash or buy some books and do some self-study courses…
Make your own destiny and stop following the fools that think chaos will actually make things better, it only destroys people, lives and futures…

Posted on January 4, 2011 at 10:37pmInteresting how the communists in Europe, along with humanitarian groups (more communists) are against the fence. And Greece finally admits that part of its economic problems stem from illegal immigration. Well, the same could be said here in the USA. Democrats and humanitarian groups (communists lite) ALSO hate the idea of a fence EVEN THOUGH our economic woes, some at least, can also be traced back to ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. The crap needs to be fixed pronto!

Posted on January 4, 2011 at 10:33pmDear Greece, If you’re going to build a fence, make sure you actually complete it and make sure it is properly secure with guards, barbed wires, and maybe even make it electric. I wish I could do the same but I’m run by a bunch of bumbling idiots who want a borderless society. Sincerely, America

Posted on January 4, 2011 at 8:11pmWhat right does anyone have to tell any country that they can not protect their borders? Obviously the economic strain of illegals is a problem everywhere. I am not a fan of Greece but watching the problems that the progressives have caused there should set off a red flagg to our nation. Free handouts can not continue without collasping an economy, illegal entry into countries are a financial burden to it’s citizens, and government control does not work. People here need to pay close attention to Greece and the UK. If allowed the progressives will take this country down as well.

I was Stationed in Germany in the 80′s and majority of the germans I knew hated the Turks that came to there country and was given handouts from the German government. Countrys Like us (USA) Germany, Canada could be the leaders of the world if they shut the flow off comepletey of illeagals. The United States has roughly 1,000,000 illeagals flowing into this country every year with the majority coming from Mexico and Latin American countrys.
