Greek Youths Firebomb Police During Anti-Austerity Protests

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Groups of youths on the edge of a major anti-austerity protest in Athens threw rocks and firebombs at police outside Parliament, where the struggling government sought support for new cutbacks required to avoid a debt default.

At a rally of more than 20,000 in the Syntagma Square, police responded with tear gas to push the protesters away from barricades erected to protect the Parliament building and the lawmakers arriving to debate the new austerity plan.

Other demonstrators who had been part of the previously peaceful gathering also clashed with the violent groups of hooded youths, trying to eject them from their rally.

The protests were part of a 24-hour general strike against the new cutbacks, which the country must pass in order to continue receiving funding from a euro110 billion international bailout that is preventing it from defaulting on its debts.

A large part of central Athens was closed to all traffic and pedestrians as police mounted a huge security operation to allow lawmakers access to Parliament by car. Some 5,000 officers, including hundreds of riot and motorcycle police, used parked buses and crowd barriers to prevent protesters from encircling the building.

“Resign, resign,” the crowd chanted outside Parliament. The protesters included both young and old, and many brought their children, hoisting them onto their shoulders to shield them from the crush.

Two separate marches organized by trade unions joined the rally in Syntagma. Such demonstrations have often turned violent in the past – three clerks died when rioters torched their bank in Athens last May.

But the latest austerity drive has brought many people onto the streets for the first time.

“What can we do? We have to fight, for our children and for us,” said Dimitra Nteli, a nurse at a state hospital who was at the protest with her daughter. “After 25 years of work I earn 1,100 euros a month. Now that will drop to 900. How can we live on that?”

Her 26-year-old daughter, Christina, said the situation in Greece had led her to leave for the U.K. to study conflict resolution.

“I have no job here. There are no prospects,” she said.

Police spokesman Athanassios Kokalakis said 10 protesters were briefly detained. About a hundred people booed and heckled as cars carrying Prime Minister George Papandreou and President Karolos Papoulias swept past for a meeting.

The general strike crippled public services across the country, leaving state hospitals running on emergency staff, disrupting port traffic and public transport, and forced radio and television news programs off the air during the morning. Journalists’ unions called off their strike to cover developments in Athens.

Flights were also operating normally after the air traffic controllers’ union dropped out of the strike.

“They keep asking us to give more,” said Ilias Iliopoulos, general secretary of the civil servants’ union ADEDY. “Now, again, they will cut our salaries and bonuses, from the little that we have left.”

The government needs to pass a new 2012-2015 austerity program worth euro28 billion ($40.5 billion) this month – or face being cut off from the rescue loans from European countries and the International Monetary Fund.

To meet their commitments, Papandreou‘s Socialists’ abandoned a pledge not to impose new taxes and have drawn up a four-year privatization program worth euro50 billion ($72 billion) – further fueling protests against austerity by public utility employees and other affected groups.

Some governing party lawmakers have publicly criticized the new cuts. One of them defected on Tuesday, reducing Papandreou’s parliamentary majority to five in the 300-seat legislature. Another Socialist lawmaker said he will vote against the bill, which is set for final approval by early next month.

Papandreou faces an open revolt from his own party and a refusal by the main opposition conservatives to back the new austerity bills, despite EU pressure for cross-party support.

Papandreou met with the president to discuss how to solve the crisis.

“A national effort is required. Because we are at a historically crucial moment and a time of crucial decisions,” Papandreou told Papoulias, adding that he was still in contact with opposition party leaders in an effort to garner cross-party support for the austerity drive.

“But on the other hand, everyone has to assume their responsibilities,” Papandreou told the president, according to a transcript of their conversation released by the prime minister’s office. “In any case, we will move forward with this sense of responsibility and the necessary decisions” to pull Greece out of the crisis.

The statements calmed concern, voiced mainly in the local media, that the prime minister might have been considering calling early elections.

The Socialists’ popularity plummeted in recent weeks over the new austerity plan. A weekend opinion poll gave the main opposition conservatives a four-point lead over their Socialist rivals, the first time the party has been ahead in surveys since 2009. The next general election is scheduled for October 2013.

With its credit rating deep in junk status, Greece is being kept afloat by the EU and IMF bailout, but will need additional support to cover financing gaps next year as high interest rates will prevent it from tapping the bond market next year, contrary to what the original bailout agreement had predicted.

On Monday night, Standard & Poor‘s slashed Greece’s rating from B to CCC, dropping it to the very bottom of the 131 states that have a sovereign debt rating. That suggests Greece’s creditors are less likely to get their money back than those of Pakistan, Ecuador or Jamaica.

The radicals here in the United States are salivating at their turn to emulate the Greek youth. I’m sure the unions and other socialist based organizations are set and just itching to get out in the streets to create chaos.
The big question is, are our intelligence and law enforcement agencies geared up and keeping an eye on them? Another question is, will Holder’s DOJ interfere with efforts to stop the radicals?

The EU should pull out, and let this infantile nation see the consequences of short term thinking, and selfish parochialism. Problem is, the EU was a socialist project, and the goal was a net that included all, covered all, and controlled all. One ring to bind them.

When you travel far down the wrong road, it takes time to retrace your steps and make a new decision. This is painful. But it is necessary. What else do you need to know?

These children can pout and scream all they want about how life isn’t fair. The reality is that their cozy benefits have not been fair to much of the rest of the nation–and to their children, who are already suffering the consequences of their parents abdication of responsibility–and that what is happening now is in fact not only fair, but apparently needed to teach them some basic lessons about life.

Firebombing police is an act of insanity. Whatever else, those are their countrymen, and to try to physically maim or kill is beyond me. Times are going to be tough everywhere because of the actions of socialist leaders, but we (thet) voted for those people, now we have to clean up the mess. I hope they ure out how to help each other. band together, pool their resources and bring their country back-without socialism, because that is what is ruining Europe-and the left it trying it here. With a high school drop out rate around 75% and most of the city population depending on government assistance for food and housing, the riot will happen.

Or govt. cronyism and human greed at it’s worst. I wouldn’t get to feeling too high and mighty over the Greeks. The U.S. (and arguably the world entire) aren’t going to escape this decade unscathed. When the cuts inevitably come here, you will see the same drama play out. Sure, it’s the unions and govt. employees who will lead the charge, but once Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security start to evaportate, every entitlement loving American will be ready to hurl words, rocks and Molotovs. This is like watching your neighbor’s home burn with a “better you than me attitude”… while your psychotic family plays with matches in your living room.
I could be wrong, and as a parent of three teens, I pray to God I am, but any student of history can see the groundwork is being laid for one of those enumerated global conflicts that tends to result when peoples are fed up with their govts. and govts. start looking for an out. Throw in Islam, a dash of illegal immigration, resurgent nationalism, a smidgeon of govt. expansionism, and ideologies that can‘t play nice with each other and you’ve got the WWI era redux.
Human beings tend to destroy things in their frustration. I have faith humanity will be true to its tribal nature. Then again, I’m generally a misanthrope and trust VERY few of you. My crazy rant may amount to naught in this decade, but the crush WILL come at some point.

      @Sinista
I believe we agree again. Though I detest socialist hippie leeches, pigs are worse. Disliking pigs does not make you a leftist, Beck. It’s actually one of the few things leftist get right. (no pun intended)

Is there any doubt that it will not come to this here? Civil unrest is coming. When that happens pig sycophants (like Beck) will understand once again (like in Wisconsin and Pittsburgh G20 protest) where the pig loyalties really reside. Unconstitutional, jack-booted, union thugs… oh yeah, let’s support that.

This is where public employee unions ultimately end up driving the country off the deep end. No one wants to take a cut. I understand that. But we just can’t continue the current rate of spending. Everything has to take a cut. Start with Welfare, food stamps, medicaid, medicare, and social security.

Ugh… eveyone is anti-socialism… except when it comes to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and health care in general. I’m anti-socialist because of those programs and the mindset that the collective, not the individual, owns individual health. Nothing (save maybe some organized religions) brings out the ugly more in people than when an entity asserts that it must limit or withhold entitlements people believe they are owed and/or have earned. Any parents here? Renege to a child… and watch the drama unfold.
I know a lot of ‘conservatives’ who readily defend Medicare and Social Security as untouchable rights. Even Medicaid is often lumped in as the third sacred cow, giving us the Holy Trinity of the Third Rail in Politics.
I am stunned by the level of hubris that is asserting “better Greece then us.” I know some of you folks aren’t naive, but when some 60% of the Tea Party says the Holy Trinity is not to be addressed in cuts, you’ve lost me. You are clearly not serious about curtailing your own fall from on high.
I expect to be told to shut up and go away; denial is an expected defense. Fine. I admit that thru some divine intervention, I could be wrong. But to assert that the system of govt. here in the U.S.and the general population is too savvy and responsive to not go the way of the Greeks is suicidally arrogant.
Throw around labels, blame ‘-isms’… it’s all history repeating itself.

NO US money for Greece!!!! Those lazy people have no sense of their reality. We have no money to send to these lazy, self-entitled people.

While I completely abhor and despise riot clad goons that protect criminal politicians, I completely loathe and want to extermninate leeches that believe that they are entitled to the earnings of others.

The core problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people’s money. That hour has arrived.

protestirs goign crazy (reminds me of WI) the goverment in greece saying they may have to privatiz, did i read that right, wouldnt that mean if i read it right that they are embracing capitalism to get out of there socialist problems and uncontrolled spending and benifets.just proves how bad unions are, they did have a purpose, right up untill they got so greedy with the private sectors money in the form of tax.Want beetr education, get rid of the unions and teach real history real science, math english art music etc. Instead they keep no good workers who work half as hard as anyone in the private sector and make twice as much plus we pay for their retiement and heath care in most cases, then they throw a fit when you say they need to pay more. , dont people see that taxes are overly high do to these sweetheart unions and federal jobs and the theft from private sector in American…hmmm Im sure ill take heat from the soros junkies for this one, bring it i say. people with common sense can see the truth thru your lies anyways.
