Green Bay Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Wins NFL Most Valuable Player Award

Aaron Rodgers Wins NFL MVP

(AP) — Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has won the 2011 Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award in a landslide.

Rodgers earned 48 votes to two for New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. The Packers star is the first Green Bay player honored since Brett Favre concluded a run of three straight seasons as MVP in 1997.

“It means a lot to be recognized as a consistent player and contributing on my team,” Rodgers said. “I think it’s an award that relies on a player having the support of his teammates, obviously, guys blocking, guys running, guys catching, guys making plays. But I’m very honored to receive the award.”

Rodgers received a standing ovation after his name was announced by Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, the league’s only four-time MVP. The award was presented on the “NFL Honors” primetime special Saturday night on NBC.

“We’re all really excited to see you back on the field next year,” Rodgers told Manning.

Rodgers led the NFL in passing with a 122.5 rating built on 45 touchdown passes, six interceptions and a 68.3 completion percentage as the Packers went 15-1 and won the NFC North. The Packers were beaten by the New York Giants at Lambeau Field in the divisional round.

“People really count on me to be consistent each week, to play well. Knowing that my performance, the fact that I touch the ball every play, I have a direct impact on the game, the way I play,” Rodgers said. “And if I‘m playing consistent and doing things I know I’m supposed to do, we’ve been able to have some success because of it.”

He joins former Packers Bart Starr, Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung as MVPs.

Rodgers is the third consecutive quarterback voted MVP, joining New England’s Tom Brady (2007, 2010) and Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning (2008, 2009).

There are more Lombardi trophies in the near future. Just get the defense to rank in the middle teens and watch out.

I will fly my Packer flag (In Florida) for another week longer after the Super bowl, in honor of the MVP.

And have the new one flying with anticipation at the start of training camp. Below the Stars and Strips of course

You know who I miss a lot? Mr D, the Preacher of pain, Mr. sack attack. Reggie White. The packers needed a pass rush this year to go further. #1 Offense and #32 Defense does not cut the mustard.

Great Job Aaron, looking forward to next year.

I do miss the Minister of Defense and he did anchor that defense like they have not seen since. When the Saints were knocked out I knew I had still had my Pack to get the trophy. Once they were knocked out, my season was over. I’ll watch the game tonight of course but only because I love football. Really wish we had the Saints or Pack in the game though.

Yeah, I was actually hoping for the Broncos to get the other side of the ticket. And either the Saints or the Giants if the Pack lost. You guys and the Giants were the only ones to give us a run this year.

Yeah, I will watch and cheer for the Giants I guess. Dag nabit!

Really? Aaron Rodgers? With the exception of passer rating and INT’s he lost out on every other category to Drew Brees. I won’t even mention their post season stats (which I realize are not considered in voting).

Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge Rodgers fan and root for GB any time they are not playing the Saints but I really thought that at the very least, the honor should have been shared.

Aaron Rodgers did not best Drew Brees numbers in the rest of the categories because he was sat down in the middle of the 3rd quarter or the 4th quarter of most of the games this year (and didn’t play at all in the last game of the season). Had he stayed on the field, his numbers would have been much better, including breaking the all time single season touchdown record. He was phenomenal this year, and his quarterback rating speaks for itself. Any other year Brees would have had this, but Rodgers was amazing in the 2011 regular season.

Since you’re from Detroit, I’ll make this simple for you. MVP Covers ONLY the regular season. In the regular season, Rodgers had statistically one of the best seasons ever by a QB. He broke the passer rating record for a season, which is the standard to a QB’s effectives. It basically means he had the BEST season ever by a QB in terms of efficiency, in only 15 games.

That enough for you Skip Bayless?
