Greenpeace Activists Stage Elaborate Prank to Protest Barbie ‘Destroying Rainforests’

I know this is hard to hear, but Ken dumped Barbie.

That’s at least according to the radical environmental group Greenpeace. The organization recently launched an elaborate marketing campaign protesting the iconic doll’s maker, Mattel, and its alleged use of packaging that contributes to deforestation. The group’s anger lies with the Singapore company Asian Pulp & Paper (APP), which Greenpeace accuses of clearcutting rain forests and destroying endangered species’ habitats.

So to make its point, Greenpeace put together an animated video where Ken finds out that Barbie is really a saw-wielding, crazy woman who hates rainforests and cute, cuddly tigers. The fake interviewer even calls her a “serial killer:”

But that was just the beginning. The group also launched a Facebook campaign that allows people to use an “Angry Ken” profile picture, and includes posters such as “unlike Barbie:”

Greenpeace Activists Stage Elaborate Prank to Protest Barbie Destroying Rainforests

And then last week, activists repelled down the side of Mattel‘s headquarters to unfurl a banner heralding Ken and Barbie’s breakup. The stunt even included a Barbie impersonator showing up in a pink bulldozer:

Initially, Mattel responded how you might imagine. Consumerist explains they dismissed the campaign as “inflammatory:”

The announcement was a change of pace from Mattel’s initial response to the Greenpeace action, which was to call their actions “inflammatory,” disable comments on Barbie’s Facebook wall, and shut down on trademark grounds Greenpeace’s Facebook ad campaign about the breakup.

But that only lasted so long. The latest news is that Mattel has capitulated and caved, suspending its relations with APP:

“While Mattel does not contract directly with Sinar Mas/APP, we have directed our packaging suppliers to stop sourcing pulp from them as we investigate the allegations,” the company announced on their Facebook page, which is usually reserved for promoting things like World Wish Day and cross-promoting Cars 2. The company also announced a new “Sustainable Procurement Policy” for all of their products which “will require packaging suppliers to commit to sustainable forestry management practices.”

That’s problematic, since APP vehemently denies Greenpeace’s allegations, noting that its paper products contain 95 percent recycled material:

Greenpeace has issued a 45-page report that boldly claims that some packaging that uses our paper contains mixed tropical hardwoods.  It goes on to attack the toymakers who use this packaging. It also resurrects long-discredited allegations about Asia Pulp and Paper Group (APP) and our products.

All materials in APP carton box packaging, as well as all other APP produced paper products, come from a pulpwood supply that is verified to follow the legal guidelines of the country of origin, including Indonesia and any other country that APP imports pulp supply from.

Despite Greenpeace’s unsubstantiated allegations, the facts are that our packaging materials contain more than 95% of recycled paper sourced from around the world. Less than two percent of the pulp in those carton boxes comes from legal and sustainable Indonesia pulpwood plantations.  And the remainder is from PEFC certified forests.  APP is one of the few companies in Southeast Asia, which has been working hard to promote the production of this type of recycled carton box packaging.  We are happy to share the scientific analysis of our packaging materials with anyone who wants to review it.

Can we really be surprised that there’s so much drama surrounding a story about Barbie?

Brazil, you’re a dumb as, lumber companies can’t survive if they destroy their supply of the product they sell, I have worked in the lumber industry and every clear cut was replanted with good healthy trees evenly spaced so they grow health and strong, that’s why we call it a renewable resource. The land is not left to farmers because that land is designated or owned by the lumber companies and they don’t just give it to goat herders to use. The land may sit for a year or two while it waits to be replanted so you might see animals grazing there but that isn’t the end result. You are a brainwashed treehuggin fool. That land is on a 50 year rotation of planting and regrowth so it’s a slow process you use to lie and capitalize on your liberal agenda.

Greenpeace leftist worry about a tree, but have no problem with the ATF Fast and Furious program that sold gun in Mexico that are turning up at murder sites. Program a complete failure, agents told to stand down from arresting people, a huge scandal involving ATF, Treasury Dept., Justice & Homeland Security and no one is covering it. A scandal being hidden easily as big as Watergate or Iran Contra.

As much as I hate these folks, I think it is time we do put pressure on these companies to stop wasting so much in resources for their products. I just bought something at the store the packaging was 80% of what I bought for something small. I think the protest groups go too far and should stop trying to shock everyone and just make a good and fair argument and people will more likely listen to make changes.

Greenpee is just another bunch of wild eyed spoiled children that have a unhealthy grudge against anything they term “big corporations”. It used to be “the establishment” in the 60′s. “Military Industrial Complex” in the 50′s. But they’re the same no matter what invisible, imaginary enemy is popular at the time. Whenever I hear “Environmental”, I’m reminded of the all encompassing term “Global (you know what)”. Which has just as many fanatics supporting it. Even the EPA admits that they don’t have enough inspectors to cover every blade of grass, so they have to make misleading statements regarding pollution to keep interest up and get funding. Greenpee is a malcontent “union”

Brasil has been cutting/burning down the rain forrest more for American and European corporate greed, than for food, back in the 60′s Florida had a bad “freeze” and lost large orange crops, as a safe guard towards future lost crops, American companys paid Brasilians to replace rubber/coffee with orange trees, the problem is when Florida has a very good year, the Brasilian farmers eats a bullet.

About the rubber trees, rubber before plastic, was the cash crop of the 1950′s, just like cotten was in the 1800′s, that’s why France wanted to keep Vietnam the cash crop of the rubber trees, I’m sorry to say, that 60,000 American’s, plus the “Devil’s Guard” from France, ex-SS soldier’s from Germany, died to keep Vietnam, why ? I used to work in the paper industry. APP is widely know for cheap, crappy recyled pulp.

Greenpeace, however, is an environmental TERRORIST organization. I love it when the Japaneze whaler boat ran into them and sank them! They should have left their crew for whale bait!

“@Brasil2520 Exactly at least one person here actually gets it.”

From my point of view… at least two people here don’t get it…

Let’s not forget the cutting/burning down the rain forrests for the cocain and maryhoochie fields. But will these activists from greenpeace to hollywood quit the blow? Nah, let’s just blame the corporations and feel better about it.

Brasil2520, maybe you should talk to your socialist/communist leaders you’ve elected to find out why they still are attempting to fix their poverty problems by giving free land in the Amazonian rainforest. The “farmers” clear the land, farm for a couple of years and then move on when the soil is played out. The only thing that is left is for the land to be used for cattle, again the policy of your government.

Class envy is an ugly thing. Things a little tough in the Favela?

Isn’t it amazing how having no sex organs makes one so wise. Grow a pair, Ken!
