‘Greetings From Exile’: Olbermann Sends First Post-Suspension Tweet

There is only so much you can do with 140 characters or less:

Greetings From Exile: Olbermann Sends First Post Suspension Tweet

The message comes as Politico is reporting that Olbermann was suspended after refusing to give an on-air apology:

Olbermann told his bosses he didn’t know he was barred from making campaign contributions, although he is resisting saying that publicly. Olbermann may not hold as many cards as he thinks. He makes $7 million a year and MSNBC‘s prime time is not as dependent on him as it was before the addition of Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell, who make considerably less.

Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher, meantime, is exploring they hypothesis that this might all be a cooked up publicity stunt:

One wrinkle that hasn’t been explored is an intriguing notion that a colleague of mine floated to me. Could the whole thing be an ingenious part of MSNBC’s re-branding effort, a publicity stunt with the dual purpose of drawing a sharper contrast with rival Fox News? Was 11/5 an inside job?

Deliberately or not, the Olbermann suspension is accomplishing great things for MSNBC. First of all, this thing is generating enough publicity to make P.T. Barnum look like Greta Garbo.

Mediaite also used the kerfuffle as justifiable reason to bring back a little Keith Classic:

What point is everyone trying to make between what MSNBC says their contracts are with their employees and people at Fox and who or what they support. Are you saying FOX and MSNBC contracts are identical? Why not find out the real reason behind his suspension, that would make more sense.

if they were actually concerned about profits as they should be due to their responsibility to their shareholders instead of spreading the God awful tripe that they spread, then they would do the wise business move by putting reruns of Gomer Pyle or The Jeffersons in that spot. The ratings and profits would quadruple.

If this is a trick by MSNBC for ratings I don’t think it is working – I didn’t see too many people outside of the standard MSNBC bobble heads standing up for him. This is not a Juan Williams injustice outcry – he broke a contract and it’s hard to defend. Juan was doing what others at NPR was doing and the fact they singled him out was what made it outrageous.

I think there is more to this… some people think that Olbermann may have messed with the wrong person at MSNBC. I don’t think so. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I wonder if firing Olbermann for a relatively benign offense (considering MSNBC’s standards!) is really for another reason? Right after Olbermann was fired, Rachel Maddow discussed Sean Hannity’s donations and endorsements in comparison. Perhaps the goal is so that pressure builds to fire Sean Hannity? Do you think he is a fall guy? Just sayin.

Just thought this looks more like a publicity stunt. Juan Williams got so much attention when he had his issue with NPR, maybe MSNBC is hoping that Keith will generate the same type of attention/outrage. The only problem is, Juan is better at what he does, and is well liked and respected, and even though he is a Liberal, he is much more likable, and STABLE than KO, IMO!

First of all, Keithy wasn’t fired. The word that has been presented is “suspended”: probably, a temporary procedure to ascertain the status +/- of his worth/significance as to his viewing constituency’s opinion. Hey, $7M per year for screaming inane, obnoxious, mindless untruths/drivel nightly is v-e-r-y “LARGE”.

Second, it is my understanding that Hannity or any journalist can donate to any organization, candidate, and/or charitable cause up to a particular amount of money as long as it is divulge to the principals…… in advance.

Fox is NOT GOING to fire Hannity soooo don’t start salivating breathlessly with palpable anticipation.

It is my opinion that this entire Olberman episode is a drama test shoot for “Desperate Blowhards”. Ole Keithy may be wwaaaaayyyy better suited for this type of venue.

I think people have to think this “issue” through. Keith Oberman was paid by GE(NBC”s Parent Company, for now at least.) People like him and and all of the host on Fox News a after pm are paid to express their Opinions. I am going back to see if opinion shows are included within NBC’s Practice regarding journalists and the prohibition of election contribution in the name of objective journalism.

I do not think that these restrictions could possibly pass !st Amendment muster.

His mother is dead. She died of advanced cancer that she never knew she had. It was discovered after she collapsed and never regained consciousness. His father fell out of bed and suffered a series of painful, lingering complications and infections before dying after six months in the hospital. Keith lost both of his parents within a year. Go ahead, make some joke about it. It spurred Keith to work towards health care coverage, and the ability to have “end of life counciling”. His family never knew if they acted in his mother’s best interests, she had never discussed the issue with them.

You misunderstand. Keith‘s mother died because she didn’t want to bother anyone and kept her symptoms to herself. She was only diagnosed after she collapsed and went into a coma. Keith’s father was insured, he got the best care that money could buy, but he ran into people at the hospital who didn’t have health insurance, and couldn’t afford the help they needed. He was very clear about why he wanted to help get health care through. He asked his viewers to front the costs of 6 free health clinics. They treated 10,000 people, many of them hadn’t seen doctors in years. At least one woman left without treatment because she was dying and couldn’t be helped. Keith doesn’t think that anyone in the greatest nation in the world should be in that position, neither do I. But I guess the freedom to die of treatable illnesses and to have your teeth rot head is something to be protected at all costs!

I find it too co-incidental that Olbermann publicly takes the high road, after how many years of “Worst person of the Week” he abruptly announces he will suspend the segment, then days later he is caught-up in a policy issue that suspends him indefinitely.

If he were suspended temporarily OR permanently, it could be viewed as a discipline action, a measured response to a defined offense, but an open-ended penalty with no explanation, other than “he broke the rules,” well, that has a hard time passing the smell test…

I don’t think it was a ratings ploy, I think instead it was a way for his boss to act immediately, but not commit to a particular time frame for the suspension. I do believe the length of the suspension, and the amount of money saved (what would it be, $7M divided by say 200 days is what, $35K/night?), will be weighed against audience reaction – the more free press, the longer the suspension. When the noise level drops, Keith will be back, breathing new life into this non-story.
