Greyhound Bus Driver Abruptly Abandons Passengers — Strands Them for Eight Hours at Truck Stop

Think you’ve had bad road trips? Wait until you hear this:

Forty-five passengers were stranded in the middle of nowhere for eight hours by their Greyhound bus driver.

It happened when they were only halfway along their route from Memphis, Tennessee, to St. Louis, Missouri.

“A 45-year-old veteran driver parked her bus at a truck stop outside the small town of Charleston, Missouri, late Friday and left after kicking an unruly passenger off the bus,” reports the Daily Mail.

After the driver kicked off the “unruly passenger,” as all Greyhound drivers are trained to do, passengers started to object loudly. Maybe that’s when she decided she had enough.

Stopping in Cape Girardeo, Missouri, about 3 hours into the four-and-a-half-hour trip, she allegedly told the passengers, “Guess what? I’m going home.”

The driver then got off the bus, locked the passengers inside, and waited on the side of the road  for someone to come pick her up.

The annoyed and confused passengers quickly called the police who got in touch with the driver and told her that she had to get back on the bus and resume driving.

The driver complied.

However, she turned the bus around and headed back towards Memphis, driving for about another 45 minutes, before she pulled off and parked the bus at a Pilot truck stop.

After she had finished parking, she exited the bus and took off in a vehicle that was waiting for her.

“In my tenure with Greyhound, I have never heard of something happening like this,” spokeswoman Maureen Richmond told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “It’s inexcusable and certainly unprecedented.”

It took a full eight hours for another bus to come along and pick up the stranded passengers.

Instead of getting into St. Louis at about 1 in the morning, as originally planned, they did not arrive until about noon the next day.

“I was upset. I was scared because I didn’t know if a new bus was going to come. They kept saying a new bus was going to come, but no buses came so we had to spend the night on the bus,” passenger Ashley Ahart told KSDK TV in St. Louis.

At this moment, Greyhound officials are not sure why the driver (who has worked for Greyhound for almost 7 years) decided to abandon the passengers. It might be safe to assume the altercation with the unruly customer and the subsequent objections from the other passengers prompted her otherwise erratic behavior.

At this moment, Greyhound officials say that she will face “disciplinary action.” One can’t help but assume that said actions will include a pink slip.

Good for this driver, maybe this driver felt threatened by the crowd, maybe she just felt fed up with the mealy mouthed idiots she was driving, maybe she just said“ Take this Job and Shove it”

A higher percentage of the general public are testy and threatening to customer service reps than ever before; without so much as a hint of provocation. Even elderly Wal Mart greeters are mistreated and disrespected without cause on a regular basis. I service their stores and hear about it every day. I bet this driver just broke down and couldn’t cope with the stress any longer. It’s possible she did the passengers a favor by leaving them stranded. Perhaps she recognized that by having a nervous breakdown, their safety could be compromised. Who knows?? Inmates are running the asylum that’s for sure.

Secondly, what the heck does people taking public transportation(things that tons of well-off people do to commute into major cities) have to do with this story? Greyhound buses are not public transportation.

      Wow.

Nowadays, Christians who don’t want to risk the choice of arrest, starring as a porn star in the TSA’s “virtual stripper” x-ray booths, or want to have someone putting their hands down their pants and arrest them can’t fly any more… unless they can afford a private jet.

So basically, your only choices are to drive, take the train, take a bus, or walk. Sometimes the bus is the only reasonable option.

Baddoggy’s post is right on. I remember one night being parked next to a Greyhound bus in the terminal while the police were removing somebody who OD’d. The needle was still in his arm. This was during the 1990 strike. I also remember striking drivers on the picket line giving me the old 1 finger salute and hollering ‘scab’ and cursing as I drove into the station, even though we didn’t work for Greyhound and were non-union. These were guys who used to sit with us in their break room & BS about the good old days! (http://www.angelfire.com/al/silverball/strikes.html)

For those who might be interested, here‘s an excellent site dealing with Greyhound’s downfall. (http://www.angelfire.com/al/silverball/strikes.html) As a former charter bus operator I’m fully aware of the conditions Greyhound drivers work under. My company was a non-union interline carrier for Greyhound, eg. we accepted tickets from Greyhound passengers for routes that we operated. I have two former co-workers who went to work for GH without realising what they were in for. No regular routes for them-having to work the ‘extra board’ for several years before being allowed to bid on a regular route, NEVER getting enough sleep! To cap this unholy scenario drivers no longer have the authority to control their environment that they used to…..I feel that the driver in this situation just ‘lost it’!

she just did what a lot of us have wanted to do,as a great poet once wrote “”‘ take this job and shove it,i ain’t working here no more, you better not try to stand in my because i am walking out the door, take this job and shove it,i ain’t working here no more,”"‘
    johnny paycheck.

some times you just have to say screw it, you can only take so much B.S. and i guess she had shoveled her last shovel full of crap.takes a lot of guts to do what she did, but we have all wanted to do it and some of us have, maybe not the smartest thing to do, but when you have had enough, enough is all that’s left.

If this driver has a stellar 7 years, I would hope Greyhound would give her the benefit of the doubt before firing her. We put up with too much from people who do not have the safety of the public in their hands, but will sue if there is an accident caused by the unruly passenger. Perhaps next time, if there is a next time, she should just call the police to remove the passenger and subsequent complainers.

I hate to be the one to say it, but since I’m from that area, I feel qualified. It was probably a black person who was disruptive and all the others on the bus tried to defend him/her. It wasn‘t someone from Cape GIRARDEAU because they don’t have a bus station anymore.

You idiots, it’s spelled Cape Girardeau. I’ve been able to spell it since about the third grade. That’s my home town, and my grandma was born in Charleston. And it’s not the middle of nowhere, except for the fact that there is no longer a bus station there. It got closed down. That’s the same bus station that I left from in 1984 to be taken to the AFEES to join the Navy.
