Group: At Least 500 Dead in Riots After Election of Christian in Nigeria

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria (AP) — A civil rights group says at least 500 people died in rioting that followed Nigeria’s presidential election.

The Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria said Sunday that the worst hit area was Zonkwa, a town in rural Kaduna state, where more than 300 people died in rioting. The group says other killings took place in Zangon Kataf, Kafanchan and the state’s capital of Kaduna.

The group has called for a federal investigation into the killings.

The violence erupted as election results showed Christian President Goodluck Jonathan had won the vote. Many in the predominantly Muslim north of Africa’s most populous nation felt the next president should have been from their region because a Muslim president died last year before he could complete his term.

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) — At least 11 recent college graduates who helped run polling stations as part of the country’s national youth service corps have been killed in postelection violence in northern Nigeria and other female poll workers have been raped, police said Sunday.

Authorities have sought to reassure members of the National Youth Service Corps that it will be safe for them to take part in Tuesday’s gubernatorial elections being held in 29 states.

Police have arrested 68 suspects in connection with the deadly riots that were sparked by the April 16 presidential election, Bauchi Police Commissioner Amana John Abakasanga told The Associated Press.

The violence erupted as election results showed Christian President Goodluck Jonathan had won the vote. Many here in predominantly Muslim north of Africa’s most populous nation felt the next president should have been from their region because a Muslim president died last year before he could complete his term.

Retaliatory violence by Christians soon followed, and officials say more than 40,000 people have now fled their homes. Authorities are fearful that releasing any official death toll will only prompt more fighting, but witnesses believe hundreds have been killed across the north.

Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps is a mandatory yearlong assignment for all Nigerians who graduate from university before the age of 30. Most serve as teachers, but the April national elections have brought extra responsibilities — and danger — to their work.

Ironically the founders of the program created it in 1973 to promote national unity in a country with more than 150 ethnic groups and to help reconcile Nigerians after a 31-month civil war claimed as many as 1 million lives. By encouraging young graduates to explore new parts of the country, the goal was to dispel negative stereotypes.

At least four of the young poll workers were killed in Bauchi last week when an angry mob locked them inside their youth hostel and set it ablaze. The vote for governor has been delayed in Bauchi state until Thursday because of security concerns there.

    Hey Ya’all; I remember right after we were attacked on 9/11 I figured, why not just start loading giant cargo lanes with hog guts and blood and stuff and start dropping it all on Muslims. It‘d be pretty cheap compared to all the other stuff we’ve tried, that didn’t seem to do any good at stopping these idiots.

      You seem angry that this story was reported but another wasn’t. What is the point you are trying to make. If every story is not reported on then none should be reported on. The Ivory Coast elections were held last year and I am not sure of the date but did read that recently Chrisstian Laurent Gbagbo was arrested from groups loyal to Muslim Alassane Quattara.

      I think I remember this being reported on during that particular period. I have no idea if the Blaze reported on it or not or if the Blaze was in existence during this particular time. I am too tired to do a full reasearch and am only voicing an opinion.

      Just seems strange that you are more interested in reprocity more than this one particular story. You seem more upset about a story that may or may not have been covered than you do that innoncent people were killed during riots that broke out over the election.

    Elsewhere in the world over 30,000 N.African cultural enrichers are flooding into Italy from Libya. They are coming on extremely over crowded boats. Surprisingly there are few women and children until interviews revealed that the cultural enrichers were jettisoning them when they got worried that their boats were being swamped. Islam: its not just a religion, its a way of life… errr I mean death.

    And the forces of cultural strike once again!! and in MY home town, a cultural enricher was convicted of beating and raping his wife, and slicing the throats of his four children. He got mad at his attorney ( court appointed) because the shyster couldn’t sell his defense of his home being invaded by 3 men , and he being held for $10 Million ( said with a Dr. Evil leer) ransom. And when he didn’t cough up the cash, these 3 strangers raped his wife( although she said it was him) and killed his children. There isn’t a hole deep enough in hell for this POS.

      I know the movie is long to watch, and over the years I just watched part of it on YOUTUBE, but to watch from start to end was excellent, the clan to save the white woman, as the music from STAR WAR‘S play’s on, that was extraordinary for the time, at the end I wanted to cry / cheer !       I could be mistaken, but wasn‘t Birth of a Nation the racist movie that was screened at the White House during Woodrow Wilson’s presidency? This was mentioned more than once when the Progressive Movement was being discussed on Glenn Beck’s TV show.

      For those praising this movie, perhaps some soul searching may be in order.

      What‘s extraordinary about the movie is it’s vision into the future, The Birth of a Nation, was made a 100 years ago, a time when Lilly white people didn‘t even lock’s there front doors, the movie predicted all of today‘s problem’s, the riot’s of the 1950″s 1960′s 1970″s 1980‘s 1990’s, the movie showed us what happen’s in a all black world, extraordinary anticipation of crime for 1915.

      Look at crime at mostly black cities, they are always highier than the national average.

      The movie was the highest grossing film of the silent film era, and yes Woodrow Wilson was the first President to view a movie at the White House, after the movie he supposedly said the film was ” like writing history with lighting. And my only regret is that it is all so terribly true ”

      My mother and I have been victim’s of crimes in Jackson Heights, Queens. My wife was a victim in Tacoma WA. It‘s like blacks and Hispanic’s are hunting us down like prey.

      So ya when I saw this movie, at the end I want to cry with pride, GO SAVE THE WHITE WOMEN ! ! !
