Group Blasts Liberty University as ‘Extremist, Homophobic & Intellectually Narrow’

It’s a rare occasion that a gorgeous, 217-acre college campus is very literally offered up free of charge to a worthy party. Yes, that’s right — an entire higher education facility. The only stipulation is that the receiving group must be Christian in nature. While this is a generous gesture, the property, located in Northfield, Massachusetts, has some residents extremely nervous — especially considering that Liberty University, an evangelical institution that was founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell, is one of the prospective candidates ready and willing to move in.

The Rev. Jerry Falwell (AP)
Some people are so nervous about Liberty’s potential takeover of the land that a petition against the institution has been launched. In fact, alumni of the Northfield Mount Hermon prep school — the school that owned the site until 2009 — are petitioning against the potential Christian owners, alleging that Liberty is “extremist” and “narrow” in its teachings.
The New York Times has more:
More than 1,000 alumni of Northfield Mount Hermon have signed a petition calling Liberty “an extremist, homophobic and intellectually narrow institution” that clashes with the values of D. L. Moody, an evangelist who opened a school for girls on the property, his birthplace, in 1879.
“Whoever comes in there should have views consistent with the legacy of the place,” said John Howley, a Northfield Mount Hermon alumnus and former trustee who signed the petition, which is addressed to the chairman of the school’s board of trustees. He described Moody as a promoter of “big-tent” Christianity. “We don’t want it to go to a place that is not open-minded, not willing to listen to the views of others,” he said.
The petition calls for Northfield Mount Hermon’s trustees to publicly stand against Liberty’s potential acquisition of the land. That being said, the school’s leaders have proclaimed that they have no say in what Hobby Lobby does with the institution (the prep school is now consolidated at a different location). The former prep school students also write:
Thus we must register our principled objections to the proposed sale of the former Northfield campus to the institutional and patrilineal inheritors of the extremist, exclusionary, and authoritarian dogma of the Moral Majority in the 1980s and its role in consolidating the far right’s political will-to-power through the Christian Coalition as well as its allies and successors. These ambitions in fact have been made explicit for the entire Northeast according to Liberty University Facebook page comments on the sale of the Northfield campus. One comment enthuses: “To have such a light in the dark reaches of the Northeast would be great.”

The campus in Northfield along with its 43 buildings, is being offered for free to an orthodox Christian group who can come up with a solid plan to use it. (AP)
The land in question was sold by Northfield to Hobby Lobby, a craft-store chain that is owned by the Green family. While the initial plan was to give the institution to a foundation named after famed Christian writer C.S. Lewis, that plan didn’t pan out. The foundation was initially hoping to open a Christian college focused upon the study of books, however a down economy has shelved those plans.
So, the Greens are relying on help from Jerry Pattengale, a college administrator in Indiana, to find a reliable college that has the financial backing to take the property over. Liberty, to the chagrin of some locals, has the ability to manage such a massive campus undertaking. Plus, the Greens already seem to have a connection to the Christian college, as they donated $10.5 million toward the building of a law school at Liberty (they also gave $70 million to Oral Roberts University, another Christian school).
There’s no telling which institution will inevitably get the property, but if it is, indeed, Liberty, it’s likely that there will be some tensions. After all, the northeast is somewhat less evangelical and more unfamiliar than the south with the values that are held at the conservative school.

Do you mean like every radically left academic institution in the country?
The same ones who deny conservative speakers the right to speak?
The same ones who are rife with mentally deranged kooks who chain themselves together at the school auditorium to keep out those with different views than what the student fools have been brainwashed with.

Christians are persecuted and vilified when they are effectively shining the light of Christ on those who love the darkness.
When Christians feel safe, content, and free of controversy, then satan has completed his work in rendering them ineffective for the gospel.
Blessed are you when men hate you, And when they exclude you, And revile [you], and cast out your name as evil, For the Son of Man’s sake. (Luke 6:22)
If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before [it hated] you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. (John 15:18-21)

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 1:37pmYou are utterly CORRECT. They truly believe that they have some supreme authority to simply PROCLAIM that “open minded” means “agrees with our liberal ideology”.. They love tolerance, and will not TOLERATE anything that disagrees with their invented definition of “tolerance”.
Report Post »I still wish someone would demonstrate that the belief that homosexuality is immoral is somehow “phobic”. They know full well that is a bull shee-ite term that is intentionally misapplied.
They also teach that heterosexual fornication (outside of heterosexual marriage) is immoral – New England doesn‘t seem to have an issue with Liberty’s stance on fornication. they teach that adultery is immoral – don’t see the New England “open minded” so-called intelligentsia with their tightie-whities in a bunch, calling them “marital infidelity-phobics”, or “forniphobics”.
It’s a total bull crap “power word” they invented to imply irrationality to something that certain people have a rational opposition to. If it violates a tenant of one’s religious beliefs, it is absurd to call it a “phobia”…that’s just liberal bully tactics. Liberals love to tells lies, for example. Liberty University’s stance is that it is sinful to lie. I sure don’t hear Bill Clinton or Nanci Pelosi calling them “deceit-a-phobics”. Objecting to something does not make one phobic. It means that someone has “diferent views”, and the left, ultimately, is the side being “close minded to other views”.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 2:14pmHarvard, Princeton and Columbia Universities were all founded as Christian Biblical colleges. William Blackstone set the foundations of legal teachings at Harvard Law School and they were based on the Bible and Christianity. After Darwin came out with his theories (not law) in 1859, Harvard had a new Dean come into power in 1869 who idolized Darwin and the rest is history – or should I say historical revisionism. Our Country was founded as a Christian Nation no matter what Obama or his minions would have you believe. All schools from elementary on up used the Bible and the New England Primer to teach our children. We have all been duped with the myth that the founding Fathers meant for the separation of church and State the way it is presented now. When they spoke of religion in our beginnings – they meant Christianty and only Christianity! Find out everything you can about the truth regarding the founding of this country and it’s original Universities. Watch The Truth Project series and that could be a good starting point.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 8:38pm@Marine25 – Check out CreationMinistries.org and the teachings of Russ Miller. I believe you will find that the real truth is that our Earth was ‘Created’ and did not evolve over millions of years as we have all been led to believe. The Theory of Evolution is just that – A theory that the left, socialist, progressive thinkers in our time have hi-jacked to promote their own form of religion. If Liberty is teaching the truth about Creation and how old the Earth really is, then I’d say they are one of the best Universities in this country! Try this on for size – DNA Code Barrier plus Gene Depletion plus Natural Selection = Zero Macro Evolution. There is no way it could have happened.
How about something more simple. Imagine before the invention of the watch a Man is walking through the woods. He comes across something shiny – It’s ticking, has figures at various points on it’s face with hands to indicate a position. It’s smooth and carved with intricate detail and as the Man studies it, he realizes that somehow it is keeping track of time as it ticks and the hands move. Now do you think this person would come to the conclusion that somehow, over billions of years, the sap, the leaves, the branches and bark from the forest, the dirt, elements, rain, heat, cold have all somehow come together to form this wonderful intricate creation?? It would be obvious that there was intelligent design even in a watch. God’s word is true – He is our creator which cannot be

You don’t want to have to hire a bunch of local, whiney, entitlement minded, liberals to work at the university and cause trouble. LU should move to a state with no state income tax like Tennessee or Florida, or one with a strong state economy like Texas or North Dakota. It would be better for their employees as well as their graduates, who should be encouraged to settle in those states for their own careers and to build conservative majorities there. I wish Glenn, Rush (actually the collective group of conservative hosts) would get together and open “Liberty Prep School” in some of the inner city areas so these kids would have an alternative to progressive liberal public education (if you can call it an education). The Progressives have tainted education, beginning in kindergarten, and it is time to turn the tide. 3/5 of my grandchildren are in public high school and it scares me to death. Fortunately their parents are conservative and have taught them good values and common sense. Thank goodness there is Liberty University!

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 9:39amGRANDMAOF5 That is an excellent idea. Rush wanted to get involved in an NFL team but what better endeavor for him and Sean Hannity (New Englander) and Mark Levin than to put up the money for the Limbaugh Liberty Institute. It’s time to take on the old school schools.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 12:06pmThanks, BECKSTER2, it would also be a win/win for good teachers who are trapped in the progressive/unionized system. I bet there are plenty of empty buildings that would fit the bill in inner city areas. There could also be “community school” for parents who have hit a wall in their education, or lack of education.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 7:59amIn a state that is so liberal that a Christian university is feared and opposed, I guess Mitt actually was “severely conservative”.
