Is first lady Michelle Obama turning obese children into targets for bullies?

The National Association to Advance Fat People Acceptance charged Monday that first lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign makes overweight children a target for bullies. (AP File Photo)
The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, an organization “dedicated to ending size discrimination,” says yes.
According to CNS News, the group has charged that Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign — aimed at tackling childhood obesity — “singles out” heavy children and gives “permission to everyone to condemn them” for their size.
Peggy Howell, the group’s spokeswoman, said the “well-intentioned but somewhat misdirected” campaign focuses too much on the bodies of heavier children rather than encouraging healthy practices for all.
“When children of higher body weight hear we have to wipe out childhood obesity in one generation, for them, those words translate into ‘we have to eliminate obese children,’” Howell said. “They hear ‘thin equals good, and fat equals bad.‘ They hear ’your body is bad.’”
Watch the video, via CNS News:
In the case of bullies who target overweight children, “the perpetrators feel justified in their actions because after all, the first lady said these kids have to go,” Howell said.
“I believe it was not the intention of the first lady to cause more pain and suffering for these children, but I believe it is also one of the consequences of focusing on reducing body size as opposed to improving health,” Howell said.
Howell’s comments come as the organization is trying to encourage lawmakers to add legal protection for heavier or shorter children to a proposed anti-bullying bill.
The Safe Schools Improvement Act, introduced by Sens. Bob Casey (D-Penn.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) in March, would require schools and districts that receive designated federal funding to adopt codes of conduct that specifically prohibit bullying and harassment. As it currently stands, the bill would protect children from bullying based on their race, color, national origin, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or religion, according to a statement from Casey’s office earlier this year.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 12:29amThis is ridiculous! No one should be bullied…PERIOD! Punish ALL bullying. I don’t care why. No group should have special immunity.
Report Post »As a person who was bullied Pre-K through 12 (and beyond, but by then, it just not called bullying anymore), I know how it feels. First they pick on you for one reason. Once you build an immunity to that, they’ll just move on to a different issue about you. It’s pointless! By making “protective classes” of the bullied kids, you might as well say, “I not okay that they picked on because of this, but they CAN bully you because of THAT.” Next thing you know, THAT is now a protective class. Keep it simple, stupid.
And don’t think for a second that I support that b****-jackal, MO (Michelle Obama, **shudders** It make me sick just to say that name). She ****** me off everytime I just LOOK at her. If she had HER way, she’d probably say that every child in the U.S. (excluding her own, of course, because she’s a “good parent”) taken from their parents to be “raised correctly” by her Marxist friends.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 7:55amAgreed. I got picked on when I got glasses (4 eyes) got picked on when I got braces (tin grin, railroad tracks, etc.) got picked on because my mom teased my hair for picture day (called hairspray – this was the 70′s). they’ll find something. But this does encourage the bullying for being fat. I think it was intentional. Look at the way they fan the fires of class warfare, race baiting, etc. It’s one more class to cause tensions with. I wouldn‘t think that if she didn’t have her 1700 calorie lunches and the fact that she doesn’t practice what she preaches.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 8:01amI agree with everything you said. If I found out that one of my kids were bullying another, they would get their butt warmed. I don’t know what exactly I would give them for a punishment beyond a spanking, but it would be one that they would not soon forget. There is no reason at all for bullying and no excuse. I think people need to love their kids enough to teach them not to bully in the first place. I was never bullied severely, and can only imagine how it feels. I’m sorry you went through that as a kid.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 12:55pmMrs. Obama should practice what she preaches. First have you seen her butt? Not exactly small. A few weeks ago my family visted a “famous” ice cram parlor in Dania Beach Florid. The Obamas vistied there in 2009 and there was a newspaper article on the wall that detailed what they ate that day including: Chili dogs, followed by Philly Cheesesteak sandwhichs (”Even though we are not from Philidelphia.”) and fries, all washed down with 32 oz (only one size here folks) root beer floats, This whole meal was completed with huge ice cream sundays for desert. I estimate the meal at well over 4000 calories. And she is telling my grand kids what to eat? What a hypocrite. Additionally have you seen what BHO eats every chance he gets while on the campaign trail?

First Lady Michelle Obama over the last year has spent a total of 42 days on vacation, or a little more than one out of every nine days, according to a White House Dossier analysis of her travel.
Her vacations, the cost of which are mostly borne by taxpayers, include trips to Panama City, Fla., Martha’s Vineyard, Hawaii, South Africa, Latin America, Vail, Colo., and her visit this week to her brother in Corvallis, Ore.
The total does not include a nine day sojourn in Martha’s Vineyard that the Obamas will enjoy this month. Nor does it include a trip she made to Ireland and Great Britain in May

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 12:17amafter teaching 4th and 5th grade for over 30 years, I can tell you that fat kids have always been teased and bullied. I can also tell you that, from my experience, all the emphasis on being overweight(Time for Kids, Scholastic, and other kid magazines have numerous articles on this and schools are being told to nag about it) will increase this as it draws even more attention to those who are overweight. I can remember the girls who dreaded the weigh and measure days with the school nurse, even though they were done privately and the results were not seen or heard by anyone else. I also can tell you that most of those same overweight kids when I saw them years later(I taught in the neighborhood in which I live) were no longer overweight. They lost the weight as they grew taller or watched what they ate more carefully as dating became an issue.

Report Post »No one should be teased or bullied…PERIOD. You might as well say, **sarcastically** “Well, geez. If you don’t like being bullied for being a nerd, you should just stop being a nerd!”
Bullying is unacceptable, regardless of what they’re making fun of. I am a nerd, a band geek, a loner, and I’ve been raising (NOT breeding) pet mice since the fourth grade. These are just a FEW of the bullying topics that I’ve had to endure.
Bullies are merely insecure losers who try to transfer their insecurities to you. It’s true that SOME people try to “fit in” (these children often lose their identities), but other suffer even more because they’re told to be themselves…but be like everyone else (so people will like them). These mixed messages often make the bullied kid even more isolated (case-in-point: my younger self). I’m 29 and, to this day, I’m still a social misfit because of the CRAP I still get from the bullies in the adult world. I refuse to change who I am to please someone else.
If you think that it‘s okay for kids to be bullied because you think that it’ll encourage them to change, I would have hated to be one of your kids (and my family and I would have made sure that you whould have hated having me as a student).

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 8:03amTalk to my mother-in-law about weigh-ins being private. She has always been tall, and was a bit overweight as a kid. She said they used to yell her weight across the room to the person taking down the stats. Even though she was also much taller than her peers, she dreaded hearing that number.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 8:41amI agree with you, Angelcat. Two childhood friends of mine happened to be “big boned” with what I now know as dense bone structure. They, along with myself, were teased unmercifully, but it got worse when there were lectures about “healthy eating” and “weight control”.
I think it’s kind of sad when kids are almost jailed for bringing candy bars to school as happened in Milford, CT or the BOE reduces the drinks to water or milk since fruit juice has naturally occurring sugar. After all, are these school students or prisoners? My mother worked in a high school cafeteria for over a decade and said that the days when most hot lunches were sold were pizza days. And this was in a very wealth community.

Should my son, who struggles with his weight because of a condition he has and medication he has to take, just mand up and take the bullying because his body is different? Do you think bullies differentiate between bad eating habits and medical problems? Perhaps you should rethink your callous disconcern for those who are not “perfect” in your eyes, and who you think deserve a little bullying to get them on track. Perhaps you should fix the ugly on the inside of your own soul and spirit and you might not be so obsessed with the fleshly aspect of other people’s lives. Posted on August 12, 2011 at 8:07amBullying needs to be addressed. My younger son is thin as a rail, but smart as a whip (top 1%) and he gets bullied because he’s smart. He uses words adults don‘t know the meaning of and he’s 12. If you let kids bully because someone is heavy, they’ll say eveyone is heavy. I told my son to tell the teacher 3 times he was being bullied, and the 4th time knock them to the ground and pound their faces in. He won‘t get in trouble because I’ll stand toe to toe with the schools and say they didn’t do anything about it, so my son took care of it.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 8:32amA lot of the obese kids are children from lower income famiiies who are not being fed at home. Our largest city in the state recently had a case where someone from the federal breakfast and lunch program caught a child (2nd grade) who was hiding food in his/her backpack to take home to younger siblings. And that child was not the only one doing it. Sadly, it’s not a lack of money in most cases, but an issue of parental neglect. Think I’m kidding? Look at the YouTube of Felonious Munk about “MommaB**ches”. I‘d have thought he was off the wall on that except for the fact that I’ve seen the “weekend” food packs distributed to students who might not be fed properly at home.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 1:07amI agree that we really need to do something about the obesity in this country, and I hate that everyone is so against what Michelle is doing, when really… childhood obesity is a very REAL problem that needs to be addressed. However, I don‘t think it’s the children’s fault at all. I think we need to educate parents on how to ensure that their children have a healthy lifestyle. And of course, excessive weight isn’t the only thing kids get bullied for.. I was teased for being too skinny when I was younger and others get bullied for being “nerds”. Bullying is a whole other issue that we need to get to. I see where you’re coming from, but it really isn’t as “plain and simple” as you say.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 1:25pmActually, the Bible states that “Bodily training is beneficial for a little, but godly devotion is beneficial for all things, as it holds promise of the life now and that which is to come.” (1 Timothy 4:8).
And it also says “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body,” (1 Cor. 6:19-20).
Yeah, don’t spend your life focusing on your body, but that doesn‘t mean it’s cool to stuff your face and ignore your health.

Standing up for yourself is part of growing up. While, I sympathize with children who become targets – it is the parents and churches who need to teach children to be confident and strong in who they are. Michelle Obama IS a bully. Take a look at children’s programing these days. Fat kids are portrayed as dumb, parents are portrayed as stupid, and older people are portrayed as not worth listening to or taken seriously. It is very sad. I was watchiing a kid’s show the other day, where a older lady was lying on the ground, and a kid just drove away on his bike laughing. The progressives have taken over Disney.
