Group Plans Koran Reading on Capitol Hill on 9/11

The Hill notes that a Virginia man has planned a visible response to all the Koran-burning talk this week: A reading of the Koran on the west lawn of the Capitol.

The reading will proceed even though Jones has backed off. A Facebook page about the planned 4 p.m. quiet reading says it is designed to “counter the forces of ignorance and intolerance.”

“This event is not about religious proselytizing, but about furthering understanding and tolerance (in fact, the people organizing it are all either Christians or Agnostics). Please join us for a few hours of quiet reading in the name of brotherhood and peace,” the website states.

To counter the forces of ignorance and intolerance, we are gathering near the US Capitol Building on Saturday, Sept 11 2010 to sit and quietly read from The Qur’an. This event is not about religious proselytizing, but about furthering understanding and tolerance (in fact, the people organizing it are all either Christians or Agnostics). Please join us for a few hours of quiet reading in the name of brotherhood and peace.

But one poster on the page’s Wall asks this:

I’m curious.. is there a possibility, of appearing insensitive and anti American, by reading only the qur’an? Why not read, from all religious holy books?

The organizer, by the way, turns out to not be exactly religious:

He said he has obtained some English-language copies of the Quran from an Islamic center in Virginia, and late Saturday morning was still seeking more elsewhere. Tribby – who describes himself as “basically agnostic” – said he’s unsure how many people will attend or how much press coverage it will receive.

    If the truth offends you, then you are in the darkness. The koran belongs in the middle east with its believers and imprisoned followers. Feel free to read it THERE, in your mosques THERE. Take your korans, your followers, your slaves and get out of our country. If you atheists, agnostics and satanists want to join them, feel free. We’d love for you to go away from this country you hate and want to see destroyed. I agree with GODSDOTR, “there is such a thing as evil and we are in a battle against it”. Check out Ephesians 6, guys, and many more verses in the Bible upon which THIS COUNTRY, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, was built. JESUS NEVER WAS AND NEVER WILL BE “POLITICALLY CORRECT”. That’s one reason they crucified HIM. It may be one reason “they” do away with “us” ~~~ we are NOT “politically correct” and we know who the enemy is: “a liar and the father of lies.”

    There is a documentary on Shalom TV regarding Islam. I think every American needs to see it to understand how much hatred these radicals have towards the “infidels” which is everybody who does not stand with them, including non-violent Muslims. Their numbers are growing as they continue to flood the world with their propaganda–it’s alarming. Reading the Koran on the Capitol will only make them laugh at the US–it will not soften their hearts in the least. Remember we are infidels in their eyes and their Koran instructs them to kill us to appease their God. These demonstrators have the right to stage their demonstration, but they need to be sensitive to the families who lost loved ones on 9/11. The only thing, in my eyes that they are demonstrated, is that wisdom seems to be lacking in this country. There is such a thing as evil and we are in a battle against it.

      It is dangerous to promote tolerance of something we have not come to understand. Sadly this is what they are choosing to do by reading the Qur’an. It is a blueprint for a holy war. (jihad) I agree with you that people need to take more time to study the reality of Islam.

    The truth is i don’t know or care if obama is a muslim. I don’t care if they read the koran to people or where they read it. It is time we all worked together to heal this world. Every religion has it’s own version of a bible and for the most part they all have much the same wisdom in them. A muslim can find wise words in the bible or the tora. And the others can find some in the koran. We have all wrought injustice in our pasts because humanity is an evolving thing. Some of us have moved past burning and beheading people but people are people and evil will always lust for the power of a holy robe. It is time for humanity to decide that life and justice are more important than any mans definition of god. If there is a god, We certainly were not created to have an endless bloodbath to define what his wishes are. I say to all muslims,, I believe in god. I also believe that it is my right to worship him in the way I see fit. It is the burden of my soul to choose what is right. I can hate no man that will treat me well. I return dignity and respect with the same. Live as a good example and no religion will need to be spread by the sword. But if the swords come for you, fight to defend what is right and good not in hate. True faith is putting all books on the table for a man to read and letting him decide for himself what faith he will follow. If you can‘t do that then you don’t really believe in the word of god, you just want a fight.

      That is exactly what they want. The Qur’an is a blueprint for a holy war. (jihad) I just wrote this elsewhere but after reading your blog I wanted to respond. There is no shortage of Muslim leaders who openly proclaim the necessity of imposing Islamic sharia law upon the world. They will do this by any means necessary so that “Allah is worshipped alone.” If we studied the Qur’an we would come to understand this truth. How can we promote tolerance of something we have no understanding of?

    Prior to around 587AD (after the death of Christ) there is no record of islam, PERIOD!

    Our Founding Fathers were predominantly Christian. Any sympathy for islam was misguided and uninformed.

    have a permit approved! We will be able to gather right on the West lawn of the Captiol Building from 4-7. Please spread the word and get everyone you can to come down, even if they can only be there at the beginning.

    I am so sick of all this. If you go look at all the law suits out there about the obamas citizenship and really research it, he is not an american and he lied about a ton of stuff. And why after spending millions defending all these cases doesent he just show he is legal. I have spent the last 3 months researching all the sites possible and im telling you this is really scary guys. I am a independant and have mostly voted dem. but I am an AMERICAN and this guy has controll of the strongest military in the country. Please look into this stuff Please please please then put pressure on your news outlets and representitives. Im telling you you will be shocked. And what Judge will finaly have the guts to allow discovery and finaly hear this case. Guys we are all Americans d or r Please I have 3 children and I only want the best for them as all of you do to.       Alright, PEPPERANNE, you said I was “just insane” and you suggested I “try reading some real history books.” Afterward, you went on this rant about how you don’t think President Obama is not even a legal American Citizen! I think the credibility you showed as having, or lack thereof rather, speaks for itself.

      I am a person of faith, I am a well educated individual. I know my American history, I know my Christian history, and I know my World History. Rather than actually take on the facts I presented in my initial comment, you decide to to insult me.

      Do you not know what “ecumenical” means? Ecumenism generally refers to initiatives aimed at greater Christian unity or cooperation. In other words, the Founding Fathers were very interested in interfaith DIALOGUE & MUTUAL RESPECT! They thought this was important because they remember very vividly the sectarian civil wars that plagued England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland where they were originally from. The UK still struggles with these issues with the Irish Republican Army. So the Founding Fathers believed that interfaith dialogue and MUTUAL RESPECT was much more constructive than allowing sectarian warfare to plague the Republic. That’s WHY we have separation of church & state.

      As for my comment regarding modern American Evangelical Christianity, I’m pretty much spot-on. Research this for yourself, when you’re done perusing websites that promote that Larry Sinclair Obama Kenyan Muslim conspiracy theory. Modern American Evangelical Christianity (the kind that constantly thinks the end of the world is going to happen in 5 years, reads the whole bible literally, and believes in “the rapture”) is only about 106 years old. In terms of its roots, modern Evangelicalism CAN be traced to about the 1800s, but THAT is mostly in what today is called the United Kingdom with Edward Irving & John Nelson Darby. Today’s Evangelicals, most notably Tim LaHaye and Hal Lindsey, basically MAKE it up as they go along.

      If you want a Christian faith that is grounded in rational thought & honest relationship with God, you really need to turn to something with hundreds or even thousands of years of established wisdom and sanity. “Pentecostals,” obviously, don’t make the cut. I suggest turning to one of the Mainline Protestant denominations such as Lutheranism, Methodism, Presbyterianism, or even Anglicanism. Catholicism has a good deal of well-established history to back up its theological structure as well. The Eastern Orthodox Churches, especially the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, actually are a very good reference to what Christianity looked like in ancient times.

If you want to have an actual real conversation with this I will be happy to talk with you on line or over the phone. I dont care about politics I care about the welfare of our Country. Trust me the document on the link you gave me which is a liberal site means absolutly nothing. I dont mean to sound politicaly onesided but you really need to research with an open mind. Answer me this with even Brian williams asking him the question recently why will he just not show his birth cert. educational records, why is his mothers passport records been destroyed and why does he use a ss card of a person that would be 120 years old today all documented evidence. Please I am not trying to make this personal I am an american that deserves answers!!! Thank You

      The fact is, you send a link of a picture of his birth cert. I‘m supposed to believe because you sent a link that that’s his authentic birth cert?
      Is there even a raised seal on it?
      Look at my link, Mr Becklies and tell me there’s not a possibility that fudging in 1961 COULD HAVE happened. The possibilty remains that it’s not an official birth certificate. And just because you say so and post a link that has a “photo” of it doesnt make it so.

      @Becklies, With all due respect, I’m tired of people throwing the Certification of Live Birth out as a Birth Certificate. If you did any reading on the subject, you would already know that you do not need to be born in the United States to have one. Only the Long form certificate proves where he was born. I personally don’t care where he was born. I don’t think he qualifies as a “natural born citizen.” because his father was not a US citizen. And before you say it, being born in the US only makes you a citizen, not natural born, as stated in the 14th amendment(read it). In it, citizen cannot mean “natural born” because a naturalized citizen can never be “natural born.” Natural born is a special requirement needed only for the presidency. Anyway, why would I trust ANY politician without proof ?!?!?! They are all liars. We saw McCain‘s where is Obama’s?

      Professionals actually involved in the certification of birth & death records know this is not the real deal.

      Information is being protected. But why? IMHO the ability to divide the nation is greater than what ever an original certified copy would reveal. (?)

      Take note- NO ONE has signed this record & location is omitted as well as other pertinent information.

      The man you protect appears not to “open” & leads to then believe he is not being honest.

      CHAI, thankyou very much! I’m also a proud Catholic. Thankyou for pointing out the fact that Catholicism is the very first Christian Denomination ever! I too do not like what Martin Luther did to Christianity. I often times say that Peter is the Rock upon which the Christian Church was founded, and Martin Luther is the Rock that human pride threw at the Church, forever shattering it into tens of thousands of pieces.

      The Eastern Orthodox Churches actually are much more similar to Catholicism. The only thing separating the Roman Catholic Church from the Eastern Orthodox Church is ancient Byzantine politics.

      As a Catholic, you need to be informed that the Evangelicals that Conservatives align themselves with HATE us Catholics. They call us the Whore of Babylon & a manifestation of the Great Apostasy. Evangelicals do NOT consider Catholics to be Christian. Just look up what John Hagee has to say about us.

      And, yes, it’s perfectly possible for progressives to LOVE America. It’s why I refuse to be the proverbial “yes man” and pretend as though America has no room for improvement the way so many conservatives do. Check out Dorothy Day!

      I live in Hawaii and can supply these tidbits about the birth certificate; what was published was a computer printout not the actual birth certificate. They look quite different. Also, opps, the state of Hawaii accidently destroyed all birth certificates for the time period in question last year.
      Even if they had not destroyed all the original birth certificates, it would be a moot point because…..before becoming a state, Hawaii was a kingdom and then a territory. No birth certificates were required or issued and no birth records were kept. When we became a state, defacto birth certificates were issued to anyone who applied for them for the next 10 years. There was little consistency in the form, nor proof of residency/immigration/birth status required. It can never be proven one way or the other if he was born in Hawaii or elsewhere. Because the state of Hawaii has chosen to authenticate his birth certificate, absent concrete proof to the contrary, he is an American citizen.
      Having said all that, this should have been addressed before he was elected POTUS. Could you imagine the upheaval his impeachment would cause at this juncture? And is everyone clear on the fact that Joe Biden would be POTUS and Nancy Pelosi VP? Be careful what you wish for. You might get it.

    NEVERMIND the fact that the Founding Fathers of this country actually had a deep respect for Islam. The Founders of this nation explicitly included Islam in their vision of the future of the republic. Freedom of religion, as they conceived it, encompassed it. “A Mahometan,” wrote a Boston newspaper columnist, “is excited to the practice of good morals in hopes that after the resurrection he shall enjoy the beautiful girls of paradise to all eternity; he is afraid to commit murder, adultery and theft, lest he should be cast into hell, where he must drink scalding water and the scum of the damned.” Benjamin Rush, the Pennsylvania signer of the Declaration of Independence and friend of Adams and Jefferson, applauded this feature of Islam, asserting that he had “rather see the opinions of Confucius or Mohammed inculcated upon our youth than see them grow up wholly devoid of a system of religious principles.”

    They want to be intolerant & they want their intolerance vindicated by what they believe is American
    history & “christian” values.

    Tea Party members would rather close their eyes, cover their ears, and insist on believing what they want to believe about the Founding Fathers. Most of the Founding Fathers today would be appalled at the ignorance & lack of respect we have for Islam. It‘s worth noting that the Evangelical Christianity of today’s America is a VERY NEW phenomenon in Christianity’s history. In terms of Christian history, today’s Evangelicals in America can trace their roots back to the Azusa Street Revival of April 14, 1906. It‘s a religious denomination that’s only 104 years old!!! The Protestant Reformation was about RATIONALISM. Today, the only RATIONAL Christian denominations are the Mainline Protestants, the Catholics, and the Eastern Orthodox Churches.       We’ve got a preacher who just pulled back from a Koran-buring and an uproar about a mosque in NYC near the WTC site. This is a peaceful reaction to those things.

      Alright, ORKYDORKY, this should be pretty obvious to anybody who has been following the news, but I‘m pretty sure the point of reading the Qur’an in Washington DC on September the 11th is an act of good faith and reverence toward Islam during a time when Islamophobia has fueled controversy.

      Think of the Park 51 Mosque that has been INAPPROPRAITEY named the “Mosque at Gorund Zero.” That’s an instance where people have been allowed to vent their hatred for Islam.

      Think about Pastor Terry Jones, a Pentecostal. Think about how even the mere threat of burning the Qur’an has sparked outrage in the Muslim community here at home & abroad. I mean Jones has every right in the world to burn Qur’ans, provided he takes proper safety precautions to avoid fire hazards, but the point is that there has been SO MUCH DISRESPECT that has been allowed to prevail against Muslims in this country.

      So the POINT is to make an act of good faith to the Muslim community and sort of “apologize,” (i know that’s a four-lettered-word among the Tea Party), for all the disrespect.

      ALSO, the Muslim Holiday of `Eid ul-Fitr , which comes after the Holy month of Ramadan coincides with today. It means “Festivity of the conclusion of the Fast.” It’s basically been the Muslim version of Easter Sunday for the past 3 days. It began on Thursday & it ends today. It’s considered one of the Holiest days of the year for Muslims. But this is a COINCIDENCE. Please don’t read too much into it. The Muslim Calendar is completely lunar, which means the feast days migrate backwards roughly every eleven days year after year in relation to our Gregorian calendar.

      Besdies, hundreds of Muslims ALSO died on 9/11.

      Become informed. TEA party means Taxed Enough Already and everyone can participate. This is related to economics. As to our Founders, watch Glenn Beck. His guests bring actual copies or replicas. Our country was founded on Christian values. These are two different issues, but the press has confused them as usual to keep the uneducated in their fazed out state.

      RONRICO, what makes me sick is when conservatives & Tea Party members act as if the only people who could possibly Love America are ONLY those people who agree with THEM. I’m a proud liberal and progressive BECAUSE I love my country & I want it to live up to its full potential!

      The concept “anti-American” is an interesting one. The counterpart is used only in totalitarian states or military dictatorships. Thus, in the old Soviet Union, dissidents were condemned as “anti-Soviet.” That’s a natural usage among people with deeply rooted totalitarian instincts, which identify state policy with the society, the people, the culture. In contrast, people with even the slightest concept of democracy treat such notions with ridicule and contempt. Suppose someone in Italy who criticizes Italian state policy were condemned as “anti-Italian.” It would be regarded as too ridiculous even to merit laughter. Maybe under Mussolini, but surely not otherwise.

      Alright, SINGER. Thanks for the “crash course,” but I’m already pretty well informed. The Tea Party actually began as part of the Ron Paul movement, which was popular among anarcho-Capitalist Free Market libertarians, many of whom were conspiracy theorists. That‘s where you get that Gadsden Don’t Tread on Me Glag. However, when Obama won, the Tea Party movement received it’s official name as an anti-tax movement, which is a horribly misguided effort of populist fervor.

      As for the Founding Fathers, they were VERY tolerant of other religions, even to the point of ADMIRING other religions such as Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism. They would have found blatant disrespect for any religion trashy & unwarranted. The founding fathers were rationalists. I also don’t like how Glann Beck took the ancient Christian values of Faith, Hope, and Charity & twisted them into his own ideology of historical revisionism to suit modern right-wing trends.

      As for America having been founded on Christian values, this gets to the heart of what I’ve been saying the whole time: Yes we were of course founded on Christian values, BUT we were not founded on those values of the modern right-wing Evangelicals who call themselves “christian.”

Cause I’m pretty sure they all agree that the only way this country would continue to prosper was to follow the Bible, the Holy Bible. Islam is not a peaceful religion and it’s followers all over the world want to see Americans die. Don’t you remember 9/11/2001 AT ALL?? Muslims killed thousands of Americans in the name of Islam and there was celebration in the streets of Muslim nations around the world over the attack.

      I actually said the Founding Fathers were actually tolerant of many different faiths, Islam included. I said they’d be ashamed of all the ignorance that prevails about Islam.

      As for Thomas Jefferson’s devotion to his Christian faith, let me tell you that the Christianity of Thomas Jefferson‘s day was definitely NOT the Christianity of today’s fanatical Evangelicals who constantly think the world’s about to end in 5 years & who read the whole Bible literally thinking the world is literally 6,000 years old. The Founding Fathers were devout Christians, but, philosophically, they were alson Rationalists. Re-read what I said about the Protestant Reformation being driven by the Enlightenment Era principle of Rationalism.

      I think Islam is a religion like any other religion. You can get fanatical about it. You can be rational about it. It’s worth noting that religious fanaticism is symptome of a de-politicized society or impoverished social conditions & not the inherent religious ideology itself. People read into religion whatever they want.

      No, the mosque in NYC is not a show of them prevailing. There are many different establishments within a 2 or 3 block radius of Ground zero & right-wing extremist ideologues simply cherry-picked this issue. Such ideologues need to get a life. The mosque is simply a mosque. Nothing more. Even the Imam involved with the project is a Sufi. Sufis are pretty moderate, even liberal in their interpretation of Islam.

      TEXASCOWBOY, i absolutely am not making up my own facts. The Founding Fathers were Christians, yes, but they were not fanatical extremists about it either. The Christianity of the Founding Fathers was absolutely not the Christianity of today’s Evangelical fanatics who read the whole Bible literally & who constantly think the world’s about to end in 5 years.

      Our country‘s prosperity linked with our country’s chosen religion? Perhaps there actually were some Founding Fathers who believed this. However, the Founding Fathers were devout yet tolerant & open-minded about different faiths. They would have compared the Holy Bible to the Koran & looked at the similiarities & differences. The Founding Fathers were ecumenically inclined.

      The violent extremist fanatics who call themselves Muslims are really two different thing:
      1. one aspect is the fact that religious extremism is a symptom of a de-politicized population, or population that is in deep poverty.
      2. the other element in this is the use of a religion or philosophical ideal to justify extremist actions. In the case of these people, it just happened to be Islam.

      Of course I remember 9/11/2001. However, I harbor no ill-feelings towards or against Muslims. Whether Islam is a religion of peace or violence & hatred is up to the individual who internalizes Islam & either peace or hate: People read into religion whatever they WANT to read into it.

    My late father (1st Marine Div.) would say that this is EXACTLY the reason landed on Okinawa, Easter Sunday, April 1st 1945 and risked his life so that others could be free. He was compelled to tell many Viet Nam protesters the same thing in the 60‘s and 70’s.

Between Imam Rauf telling us if they move the mosque it would create more violence, the koran burning creating more violence and now this person reading the koran on the west lawn.       When did the Capitol become the whitehouse? The west lawn of the Capitol overlooks the national mall, which is a public park. I don’t know if the west lawn is park of the nat. park or not. @Tess you can read whatever you want and people often have groups meet there for various activities. Typically the east side (the Capitol steps) is where the Christian minsters gather and scream at passers-by that they are going to hell.

      The whitehouse faces north-south, so there really is no “west lawn” of the whitehouse, at least since the west wing was built.

Non-Muslims are not equal to Muslims under the law. They must comply with Islamic law if they are to remain safe. They are forbidden to marry Muslim women, publicly display wine or pork, recite their Scriptures or openly celebrate their religious holidays or funerals. They are forbidden from building new churches or building them higher than mosques. They may not enter a mosque without permission. A non-Muslim is no longer protected if he leads a Muslim away from Islam. 14. It is a crime for a non-Muslim to sell weapons to someone who will use them against Muslims. Non-Muslims cannot curse a Muslim, say anything derogatory about Allah, the Prophet, or Islam, or expose the weak points of Muslims. But the same does not apply to Muslims. 15. A non-Muslim cannot inherit from a Muslim. 16. Banks must be Shariah compliant, and interest is not allowed. 17. No testimony in court is acceptable from people of low-level jobs, such as street sweepers or bathhouse attendants. Women in low-level jobs such as professional funeral mourners cannot keep custody of their children in case of divorce. 18. A non-Muslim cannot rule even over a non-Muslim minority. 19. Homosexuality is punishable by death. 20. There is no age limit for marriage of girls. The marriage contract can take place any time after birth and consummated at age 8 or 9.
