Gruesome Trend: Out-of-Wedlock Infants Burned, Stoned and Abandoned in Pakistan

Children born outside of marriage are shunned in the conservative Muslim nation of Pakistan where the Associated Foreign Press noted Monday that infanticide — or the killing of newborns — is on the rise. According to estimate by the Edhi Foundation, more than 1,000 infants — most of them girls — were murdered or purposefully left to die in Pakistan last year.

The Edhi Foundation is working to reverse the grim trend but reports finding 40 dead babies left in garbage dumps and sewers in Pakistan’s biggest cities in December alone.

Edhi Foundation manager in Karachi, Anwar Kazmi, told the AFP of gruesome discoveries by volunteers, including the burnt body of a six-day-old infant who had been strangled. Additionally, Kazmi said another child was found on the steps of a local mosque after having been stoned to death on the orders of an extremist imam.

“Do not murder, lay them here,” reads a sign hanging outside the charity’s Karachi base where it has left cradles in the hope that parents will abandon their unwanted children there, instead of leaving them to die.

“People leave these children mostly because they think they are illegitimate, but they are as innocent and loveable as all human beings,” says the charity’s founder, well-known humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi.

Most children found are less than a week old.

The charity collects the bodies of hundreds of dead infants and buries them in tiny unnamed graves.  “We acquired this land to bury children after another plot was filled with hundreds of bodies,” Khair Mohammad, a 65-year-old graveyard watchman said.

Kazmi estimates that nine out of every ten babies found are female.  “The number of infanticides of girls has substantially increased,” Kazmi says, a rise attributed to increased poverty across the country.  Many Pakistanis see women as larger economic burdens than men as they are not permitted to work and are considered to be the financial responsibility of their fathers and husbands.

Fortunately some newborns are spared from the horrific practice.  According to the Edhi Foundation, up to 200 babies are left in its 400 cradles across the country each year.  These children are then put up for adoption to meet the demand of the thousands of requests the organization receives from childless couples.

Pakistani law holds that anyone found to have abandoned a child may be jailed for seven years and anyone who secretly buries a child may be imprisoned for two years.  Murder is punishable with life imprisonment, but infanticide crimes are rarely prosecuted and many police stations do not even acknowledge the cases, AFP reports.

      Sure! Stoning babies to death is used as a metaphor for abortion which is now performed and paid for by tax dollars under the health care bill.

    This is wrong but are you telling me the women who are pregnant are able to survive 9 months after having sex out of wed lock? I mean are they hiding in basements for nine months then leaving their babies a week or more after birth ? Don’t tell me families are protecting the mothers because how many articles have been posted here about fathers killing their daughters for things like becoming too westernized. I DO NOT condone dumping children and killing them but this article doesn’t make any sense at all.

    This is why; “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” is a dangerous strategy. Look at what they do, not what they profess to be. When God had the Israelites enter the Promised Land it was commanded that all the inhabitance be destroyed. They practiced religious murder including sacrificial murder of the high priestess’ child to bring in a good harvest.
    A group professes one thing than by their group actions show them selves to be something else, what are they? What they profess or what they do?
    If it is what they do, is it something you want to be a part of? Islam can be a very dangerous religion. Christianity invented the word Bastard and poor treatment of them and love child to soften the abuse. Thank to progressive’s policy here, unwed berths will be the norm not an exception. I wonder what will happen, when those wanting Islamic law, want children and unwed mothers stoned?

      Maybe it’s late but you did not make any sense to me.
      Im guessing by “ unwed berths” you meant children born out of wedlock and not single places to tie up a ship. Even so I still missed your point. And who is asking for Islamic law (. Aside from maybe Muslims)?
      Yes the Jews fought and killed the peoples living in the area to create their homeland. What was your point?

    It is said that a culture is judged by the way it values life. This is just another indication of the absolute depravity of their society.

    Is it any wonder that this happens when you consider that they can kill, maim, behead, and stone to death members of their own families.

    Theirs has become a culture of death, and the burqa a symbol of it.

    It is shocking!

    Is there no humanity in these mideastern savage countries? It is further proof that the muslim religion practices are impossible to civilize. Those who question Christians might want to think twice about the force that drives them. If having faith, believing in the ten commandments and the golden rule were followed by all, the world could actually live in peace rather than turmoil. Criticize if you will but remember at the end of the day, those who live by the laws of God pose no threat to mankind.

Let’s see…back in, what was it 1973 or 74 when abortion was legalized (I believe the very first state to do so was New York)…the rationalization they presented at the time was, “of course we will only permit abortions to be performed early in the first trimester”…Oh how “far we have PROGRESSED”…My Grandma used to say, “Once you’ve let the Devil in the front door, you’ll never get him out the back”…murder is MURDER!

      Azdebi – indescribable pain for the baby exists in both forms of murder. Abortion is not a “clean” surgery. Babies in the womb can feel. Abortion destroys their bodies. Think about it.

      Unfortunately, I think these children were damned from the moment of conception. Would you have them raised in abuse, neglect and malnutrition only to abuse and kill off their own offspring? It is a culture of a lack of sanctity for life that is largely at issue here. These children which were killed have been spared a misery we cannot know. It’s an awful thing to think of but I fear it is true.

    You don’t realize how far back some areas of the world are receding until you read stories about primitive behavior like this. I keep saying that I see more and more signs that the human race is devolving. These sorts of things keep happening despite the massive efforts of the “do-gooders”.

      God must really wonder how badly screwed up we are down here. In this a Christian nation, we have murdered some 50 million babies since the inception of Roe v Wade. The Chinese murder many of their female babies because of Chinas one child policies. The Muslims have their religious reasons for murdering babies, and on and on it goes.

      I agree with you. We live in a Culture of Death. Our Dear Leader even praised Planned Parenthood for “all of the good work” that they do. Our taxpayer dollars at work at home and abroad. We are giving the Pakistanis more than 1.5 BILLION dollars a year for the nest 5 years….and they won’t use any of that money to save these babies from the horror of being slaughtered by their own parents. It is sad beyond belief. Perhaps it is a sampling of that “Smart Power” that our State Dept. is using.

      Interesting Religion. Having a child out of wedlock is considered so reprehensible that it warrants the death penalty. But MURDERING a newborn seems to be….. so so

      LADYBUGSTX, glad I read it after breakfast, for sure. Of course they don’t say how many babies were born out of rape (that would be a good place to start if jail time is involved), hard to read anything that has to do with the involuntary death of a child. And I can’t imagine the emotions the mother most feel, the fine line between fear and anguish must be unbearable.

      What a peace loving and compassionate religion….hmmmm. For all those that shun Christianity and embrace Islam….This is the real face of Islam. Look at other headlines in Muslim countries this is not new. Islam is a legalistic, mercy starved religion, that enforces its precepts by aggression, force, fear, and coercion.
