$8 Million: That’s How Much the Wis. Budget Protests Will Cost Taxpayers

This is what the price tag associated with “democracy” looks like.

Wisconsin-based think tank The MacIver Institute has just released a video detailing some startling fiscal information: the Wisconsin budget and union protests earlier this spring cost the state over $8 million.

According to a state report, the major cost belongs to the extra security needed:

$8 Million: Thats How Much the Wis. Budget Protests Will Cost Taxpayers

But there were other costs too, like the money that will be needed to repair the Capitol. Paraphrasing a restoration expert hired by the state, MacIver says the building experienced “three to five years of wear in that one month:”

$8 Million: Thats How Much the Wis. Budget Protests Will Cost Taxpayers

And finally, there was another six-figure cost associated with repairing the lawn:

$8 Million: Thats How Much the Wis. Budget Protests Will Cost Taxpayers

How did protesters respond to the damaged property? They posted some signs on the lawn letting other know:

$8 Million: Thats How Much the Wis. Budget Protests Will Cost Taxpayers

Watch the full report below:

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has detailed some of the costs, too:

• Capitol police: $458,406. The figure does not include the normal salaries that Capitol police officers would have received anyway. It represents overtime and other staffing costs for extra hours they worked during the demonstrations.

• Other state law enforcement agencies: $3,034,088. These agencies include the Wisconsin State Patrol, the University of Wisconsin-Madison police, wardens from the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Justice. Those costs also are limited to just officers’ overtime and other added expenses, not the cost of officers’ regular salaries.

• Local law enforcement: $3,904,919. A total of 202 law enforcement agencies, from town police to sheriff’s departments around the state, agreed to staff the Capitol protests and most have billed the state for their wage, travel and damage costs. Thirty-two law enforcement agencies have not yet submitted bills.

• Additional supplies and services: $422,252, for such expenses as food for officers on duty.

You can read the report here.

I agree…sue the unions. They will then increase union dues to pay for it and then maybe those who want to exercise their right to protest will do it with a little more respect for the property of others! You have the right to protest, you do NOT have the right to destroy property.

No, I don‘t have a pension and I must admit I’d personally feel a bit uncomfortable asking my fellow residents, who not only footed the bill for my unnecessary government job, but to also to fund a 30-40 year retirement that hinders these residents own ability to retire anywhere near the age I was able to retire at.

Government work is a complete joke and it’s one thing for you losers to have the job – that’s fine. But to whine that your fellow residents object to somewhat lavish retirements to boot? You people best grow up in a hurry. You people have really put the puts to your fellow residents. What can you do for your state – not what can your fellow residents do for you???

How is Walker a “dishonest dealer?” Once he was elected, he proceeded to do exactly what he promised he would do during his campaign. I’d say that makes him a very honest dealer.

As for the protesters, I think their behavior was deplorable. I support their right to protest, but there was no need to destroy the lawns and cause damage to the Capitol. I agree with others who suggest the unions be charged for the repairs.

The Democrats incited this destruction when they walked out and fled the state. Just like when the El Quada declared war on the USA back in the 1990s, it was ignored. The state workers have declared war on the people of Wisconsin and this is being ignored. If they get away with this they will escalate their attacks on the people. Wisconsin’s are at war.

This is why people with child-like minds have no business voting – ever.

We’re talking about 22 year old people with the mental capacity of sausage.

It should be like it used to be: Only property owners had a right to vote.

At the end of the day and the dust has settled, what do these idiots think they have accomplished? What they did was essentially disregard the will of their fellow citizens; not that the leftist judges in that backwards state would have voted any differently, but maybe the progressives that fled would have returned and honored their obligations so Walker didn’t have to take matters into his own hands. All these idiot kids did was ensure they will have a less secure future, and their children (God help us all) will most certainly be living hand to mouth.

When will the people in this country man-up and act like traditional Americans?

They forgot to add how much the state of Wisconsin had to dish out to protect Sarah Palin.
The state should just bill Gov Walker and the rest of the Republican officials that caused this.

It’s okay, many of the Republican senators are going to be recalled later this year for their anti union busting laws they passed through. They will all be undone and there will be nothing Gov Walker can do about it.

6-5.5%… from 19.6% to 25% public contributions to police pensions.

Mayor Frank Jackson just laid off 82 police officers because WE’RE BROKE, and I’m glad.

What i think is being missed here is the socialist agenda for spending America into “needed” social structural change. These costs either were calculated into the “protests”, or was a “happy accident”( -Bob Ross). This is one reason these unionists don’t care about Wisconsin and other states going broke to pay for their pensions, health care, etc, they WANT the state to go broke.

Means to their vile end, and the end of America as we have known her.

He won by a good majority, the unions and left-wing power groups spent big money against him, then against the judge, and still lost both times! Walker is going nowhere, the republican senators are going nowhere. the unions have started giving up on the state. Now, the unions also understand that as soon as people start paying their own union dues and start paying attention to where that money actually goes, the union will suffer even more. when people have an option to join a union or not, the unions will loss a even more power.
wake up. what ever your political opinion is, left/right/center, does not matter at this point. Walker won, conservatives won, and based on polling and on vote count victories, they are going nowhere anytime soon. if you wanted to be smart and still left, start working on 2012 race for president. President Obama is looking at a lose evven if it is a weak republican opponent, and a major beat down if there is a strong candidate such as Palin, Rubio, Cain, or some other person that may still come out of right field. I see Reagan landslides in the future.

I’ll bet that the majority of the protesters are part of the 49% of Americans that do not pay taxes.
SO they could care less about the cost or about the damage.
The rest of the protesters are the teachers who stick it to the taxpayers through their almost free health care and pensions and tell our kids not to listen to their parents because they are stupid. In fact they may have something there, as we keep employing them and either do not vote in school elections or we keep putting the same loser board members back in.
