Guess Where Obama Says He Gets His News: ‘I Think Jon Stewart’s Brilliant’

First there was Hillary Clinton saying that she considers the anti-American outlet Al Jazeera “real news.” Now there’s President Obama saying he gets some of his news from the comedy program “The Daily Show.”

Obama revealed his go-to information sources in a cover story for Rolling Stone magazine. In an interview, he was asked what outlets he likes to digest for news outside his inner circle. Jon Stewart made the list:

What do you read regularly to keep you informed or provide you with perspectives beyond the inner circle of your advisers?
[Laughs] Other than Rolling Stone?

That goes without saying.
I don’t watch a lot of TV news. I don’t watch cable at all. I like The Daily Show, so sometimes if I’m home late at night, I’ll catch snippets of that. I think Jon Stewart’s brilliant. It’s amazing to me the degree to which he’s able to cut through a bunch of the nonsense – for young people in particular, where I think he ends up having more credibility than a lot of more conventional news programs do.

I spend a lot of time just reading reports, studies, briefing books, intelligence assessments.

Newspapers?
I’ll thumb through all the major papers in the morning. I’ll read the Times and Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, just to catch up.

Do you read Paul Krugman?
I read all of the New York Times columnists. Krugman’s obviously one of the smartest economic reporters out there, but I also read some of the conservative columnists, just to get a sense of where those arguments are going. There are a handful of blogs, Andrew Sullivan’s on the Daily Beast being an example, that combine thoughtful analysis with a sampling of lots of essays that are out there. The New Yorker and The Atlantic still do terrific work. Every once in a while, I sneak in a novel or a nonfiction book.

I thought you were going to say Playboy.
No [laughs].

That’s the same Jon Stewart who compared the Occupy movement to the Tea Party and said “if this thing devolves into throwing trash cans into Starbucks windows, nobody’s going to be down with that.” And now it has.

    Paul Krugman is a Keynesian Socialist nut job Economist, these kooks dominate modern Economist thought of central planning and unlimited debt expansion.

    Krugman explains here in this vid that the threat of an invasion from space aliens would solve the Economic crisis… these people are lunatics AND THEY RUN THE WORLD, YIKKKESSS..

      @VOX_POPULI

      Explain how..

      It wouldn’t,
      The “socialist” Keynesian error is that the money/debt comes from somewhere and somebody’s labor, either now or in the future. The Government does not create any wealth, it takes it and redistributes it. So, by fighting the threat of aliens, capital/wealth is misallocated to wasteful purpose. While there would be short term activity, in the long run there will be debt to pay and it won’t be aliens paying it. Government spending is the most inefficient way to spend money.
      BUt, it keeps the elites in power.

      “There are four ways in which you can spend money. You can spend your own money on yourself. When you do that, why then you really watch out what you’re doing, and you try to get the most for your money. Then you can spend your own money on somebody else. For example, I buy a birthday present for someone. Well, then I’m not so careful about the content of the present, but I’m very careful about the cost. Then, I can spend somebody else’s money on myself. And if I spend somebody else’s money on myself, then I’m sure going to have a good lunch! Finally, I can spend somebody else’s money on somebody else. And if I spend somebody else’s money on somebody else, I’m not concerned about how much it is, and I’m not concerned about what I get. And that’s government. And that’s close to 40% (now over 100%) of our national income.”

      @Sue Dohnim Your explanation of Keynesian is at best sophomoric. Regardless of who borrows the money the federal government or business it is what the money is spent on that determines the over utility and performance outcome. If it is invested in longer term assets such as infrastructure and education that provide increase the size of the economy in the future then it is positive. If it is used to purchase weapons or offset inadequate tax revenue for government supplied services it is a negative. Clearly top executives and investors of military contracting companies gained a tremendous amount of wealth over the past 50 years. The US exemplifies that use of government spending on infrastructure, roads, ports, railroads, airports, educational and research funding that has dramatically improved the economy. There is nothing magical about business spending over government spending, it is all about what the spending is on. And there is no moral superiority in the “Free Market”, particularly in the situation where most of the time the free market is in one direction. If the US demanded free bilateral free markets and reasonable labor and wage policies as a condition of trade agreements we might have avoided the steady decline, in real dollars, since the 1980′s. The US economy was held up by government spending under Reagan and Bush Sr., capital gains under Clinton and debt under Bush. And now there is no way to fund the consumption levels that are necessary for economic growth

      @JROOK

      I disagree, you are giving the Keynesian textbook answer and considering that nearly all academia, media and Gov is dominated by this perverted thinking it is no surprise. You use the word “if” this and “if” that, the truth is the theory seems sound but in reality it is a scam. It is theft of future labor, spent inefficiently now.

      You have it half correct, the economic utility of spending is also a factor of WHO is spending it and WHOse wealth is being spent.

      Modern Keynesians believe that ANY Government spending has economic utility. This is why the US is bankrupt.. Keynesianism is a massive failure and has caused the economic crisis we find ourselves in now.

      Keynesianism = PONZI scheme

      The “wealth” that you claim was produced was simply “redistributed” stolen from the future. That future is now.

      However, You miss the context, Krugman is a hard core Keynesian. claiming that creating a fake alien invasion will fix the economy is sophomoric. This is not building useful infrastructure. Keynesianism itself is sophomoric, it is ponzi economics which gives Governments psuedo-academic cover to legitimize expanding the State and utilize Central Planning through debt expansion. Government spending redistributes wealth, it does not create it. The scam is that it redistributes wealth/productivity from the future.. to be wasted now.

      To claim that proper spending on the right infrastructure is a naive defence of the real application of Keynesianism.

      Do Christians not see that we have a civic duty in the very least as Romans 12:20 points out to: “Be not overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good”?
      These are excerpts from the speech given on March 23, 1775 by Patrick Henry (Christian farmer)to the legislature.

      “This is no time for ceremony. The question before the House is one of awful moment to this country. For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery; and in proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate. It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should
      consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings…”…There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations; and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in
      submission and slavery! Our chains are forged!… Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace, but there is no peace. the rest is here: http://www.dailyjot.com/dailyjot/The_Jot.html

      @JROOK

      On more point..

      The Keynesian dogma.. that there is no difference between Gov spending and private spending is a clue to this perverted thinking.

      A business spends its own resources for its own interests, they risk the failure of their business if they are inefficient. Forced efficiency through voluntary investment and risk to business.

      A Gov spends future citizens labor and risks nothing, there is no built in efficiency, money is spent politically and without the risk of failure. No efficiency through forced investment and no risk to Gov.

      When the Government bails out a business that made poor decisions and is failing that creates a market distortion which effects future decision making. Moral Hazard.

      Keynesianism is the promise of a heaven without hell. In the long run, it just doesn’t work.. There is no free stuff… somebody is paying… eventually

      WE now live in a world of moral hazard, decisions are distorted by the expectation of Government intervention and enablement.

      Keynesianism is “economic socialism” free stuff and promises now that you can’t afford. When the bill is due, the party is over. Collapse the currency/debt and start over..

      1st, in response to the Al-Jazera thing. I’m a Marine, I’ve served 2 combat tours to Iraq, and worked in the middle east for 2 years on top of that on other assignments. Al-Jazeera is a legitimate news source. I guarantee the people who dump on them have never seen one broadcast. News stations these days are a lot like MTV…..They started doing one thing, then spun off and wound up doing something else. Al-Jazeera is actually a station that (gasp) broadcasts news.

      2. Jon Stewart isn’t offensive. I disagree with most of his social stances, but as a person he’s pretty funny, and there’s one thing that he does better than most people, and that is point out stupidity.

They post only stories that will divide the Right, divide the Christians from the GOP, the whites, form the blacks, making sure we all have someone to hate.
