Guess Which Company Paid $0 in Taxes (on $14.2 Billion in Profits)? Hint: Its CEO Works for Obama

Half of all Americans don’t pay federal taxes on their income. And neither, apparently, does General Electric, the multi-national company that reaped $14.2 billion in profits last year. Though G.E. is the largest corporation in the U.S., it did not have to pay a dime in U.S. taxes, according to the New York Times. In fact, the company claimed $3.2 billion in tax benefits.
That may be hard to fathom for the millions of American business owners and households now preparing their own returns, but low taxes are nothing new for G.E. The company has been cutting the percentage of its American profits paid to the Internal Revenue Service for years, resulting in a far lower rate than at most multinational companies.
Its extraordinary success is based on an aggressive strategy that mixes fierce lobbying for tax breaks and innovative accounting that enables it to concentrate its profits offshore. G.E.’s giant tax department, led by a bow-tied former Treasury official named John Samuels, is often referred to as the world’s best tax law firm. Indeed, the company’s slogan “Imagination at Work” fits this department well. The team includes former officials not just from the Treasury, but also from the I.R.S. and virtually all the tax-writing committees in Congress.
According to the Times, “one of the most striking advantages of General Electric is its ability to lobby for, win and take advantage of tax breaks.”
These tax breaks are incredibly important to G.E.–so important that G.E.’s head tax man got down on his knees and begged Rep. Charles Rangel to let a particularly lucrative one extend past its expiration date in 2008:
The head of its tax team, Mr. Samuels, met with Representative Charles B. Rangel, then chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, which would decide the fate of the tax break. As he sat with the committee’s staff members outside Mr. Rangel’s office, Mr. Samuels dropped to his knee and pretended to beg for the provision to be extended — a flourish made in jest, he said through a spokeswoman.
In an interesting sub-section of the article, the Times claims that G.E.‘s tax strategy flies in the face of Ronald Reagan’s legacy:
In the mid-1980s, President Ronald Reagan overhauled the tax system after learning that G.E. — a company for which he had once worked as a commercial pitchman — was among dozens of corporations that had used accounting gamesmanship to avoid paying any taxes.
“I didn’t realize things had gotten that far out of line,” Mr. Reagan told the Treasury secretary, Donald T. Regan, according to Mr. Regan’s 1988 memoir. The president supported a change that closed loopholes and required G.E. to pay a far higher effective rate, up to 32.5 percent.
That pendulum began to swing back in the late 1990s. G.E. and other financial services firms won a change in tax law that would allow multinationals to avoid taxes on some kinds of banking and insurance income. The change meant that if G.E. financed the sale of a jet engine or generator in Ireland, for example, the company would no longer have to pay American tax on the interest income as long as the profits remained offshore.
President Obama recently tapped G.E. CEO Jeffrey Immelt as his liaison to the business world. Immelt also serves as the chair of the President’ Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. The story is that Immelt and Obama may discuss reforming the corporate tax code–not that Immelt has any incentive to!

I restate what I said earlier: If you have a large company and pay taxes you need better accountants. The largest companies in the US do not pay taxes and it’s nothing new.
“Between 1998 to 2005, GAO found that about 72 percent of large foreign controlled companies and 55 percent of large U.S. controlled companies reported zero tax liability for at least one year. About 57 percent of foreign controlled large companies and 42 percent of U.S. large companies paid no taxes in two or more years, and a third of the foreign companies and one quarter of their U.S. counterparts paid no taxes for at least four of those years. Just 45 percent of large U.S. companies and 28 percent of foreign companies reported a tax liability for each of the eight years. The report defined large companies as those with at least $250 million in assets, or at least $50 million in receipts”

If more people could actually think their way out of a paper bag, they would see the stupidity of a business tax. It’s a hidden tax on the consumer. It’s an item in the “liabilities” column of the balance sheet of any business. To make the bottom line healthy, they must charge an amount that offsets the liabilities. This is something one used to learn in 5th grade, but public educators realized the danger of logic and have stopped teaching children real-world truths.

Totally irrelevant: They are not the only company receiving these tax breaks so talking of preferential treatment is nonsense.
“The fact that you put up that 55% of companies that dont pay taxes with out proof is illrelavent.”
More than half of the largest US companies not paying taxes and not being best buddies with BHO is not relevant somehow?
“What I wrote you already know because its the truth. He does and works for the president and the company that use to be part of GE-MSNBC was a large if not the biggest chearleader for Obama. Quid pro quo.”
Sure, GE doesn’t pay taxes. I know that. I’ve known that for years. Let me repeat myself: That is not unusual. They do not receive preferential treatment. They’re just using the tax code to their advantage, and legally too. They can pay good accountants.
Quote Government Accountability Office:
“From 1989 through 1995, a majority of corporations–both foreign- and U.S.-controlled–paid no U.S. income tax. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data GAO reviewed indicate that newer corporations were less likely than older corporations to pay taxes. Another significant difference between large foreign- and U.S.-controlled corporations was in their distribution across industrial sectors. In 1995, large foreign-controlled corporations were more heavily concentrated in the manufacturing and wholesale trade sectors and less so in the financial services industry. Aggregate ratios of costs to receipts for all large corporations differed significantly across industrial sectors.”
(Source: http://www.gao.gov/products/GGD-99-39)
There is a 24 page PDF report too if you’d like to take a closer look.

Posted on March 26, 2011 at 12:08amAnd you ignore the other article from the GAO?
Also, they’re called tax loopholes for a REASON. They’re abusing laws obviously intended for different reasons to the sole effect of paying lower taxes. Willfully creating large losses in the USA and raking in incredible profits overseas is one of the many loopholes companies like to use. What you can see in the table are the loopholes the companies have used, not some emergency or shortfall the companies had because of bad planning or misfortune; we’re talking about Fortune 500 companies here. All this information is in the article I posted which you did not read, apparently.

Posted on March 26, 2011 at 12:20am“Plus you cannot claim 55% of american companies dont pay taxes from statistics 12 years ago.”
Is it? How so? I could understand if you wouldn’t accept statistics from 50 or 60 years ago, but tax laws from 12 years ago haven’t changed significantly. If you’d like to argue that things have changed in some fundamental manner (i.e companies suddenly started to pay 100% of their taxes), I’d like you to present proof for that. Otherwise all you’re doing is moving the goalposts.
I made the assertion that a significant number of companies use creative ways to dodge paying taxes. I presented conclusive proof, from a government source no less, and even the names of specific companies. Articles on this topic are on the net everywhere, all you have to do is use Google if so inclined.
As I enjoy irony, I will post you a link I got, from Google, about a certain company that avoided paying billions of dollars in taxes: Google.
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/google-loophole-dodge-corporate-taxes-bloomberg-report/story?id=11939752
Another popular tax loophole:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-12-29/dodging-repatriation-tax-lets-u-s-companies-bring-home-cash.html
Please accept that among companies, especially from the Fortune 500, tax dodging is RAMPANT. We’re losing billions of dollars in tax revenue because of tax loopholes but somehow no politician grabbed an accountant yet and asked where these loopholes are.
Or maybe those politicians are being paid very well not to care (for which I, of course, have no proof).

I completely agree with all of you that GE should pay their fair share of taxes if not more.
This is what happens when you give all the tax breaks to the rich and corporate companies.
You can cut all the taxes you want for the rich, they won’t take that extra money to create jobs.
All they do is take that extra cash and hide it in off shore accts.
Glenn Beck stated yesterday on his show that he has 10 people on his payroll to do his 1 hour show on Fox. Do you think if we cut his taxes that he will hire more people to do his show?
Bunch of liars and crooks.
—————————————————————————————————————————————
I’m going to go out on a limb here, but I‘m going to take a wild guess that you don’t listen to Glenn’s radio show. He currently has 52 (give or take 1 or 2 from his last quoting) employed by Mercury Radio Arts (his and his partners radio and production company) and he has recently brought on board new employee’s and is in the process of hiring more. SO yes he has and will.

Report Post »Do you think if the rich and big corporations taxes were raised, that then they would create jobs? BHO likes GE so much he put Imelt, the CEO, on his economic panel. GE has been a net exporter of jobs, keep large sums in off shore accounts, and have even gotten subsidies from the govt. The progressive idea seems to be to get as much money as possible from tax receipts and redistribute it to their cronies. It is not about jobs or the middle class, except to get the vote.

Okay, that’s bad, I agree. Let’s close those loopholes. By my irony/hypocracy meter has pegged out. Don’t conservatives want to cut corporate taxes to “create jobs” (even though that’s false, jobs are created not when owners have more money, but when there are more people who can pay for their products). So a lot of companies, not just GE, aren’t paying taxes. Isn’t that what you want, no taxes for corporations or the other rich? So they can create jobs? This is bad? Explain.

Posted on March 26, 2011 at 7:21amThe Obama REGEME is less transparent and more corrupt than any I can remember in my lifetime that spans the presidential offices of 13 Presidents. The Obama & Holder (O&H EXPRESS) team are railroading the American people and the nation into total colapse. Unfortunately, the three branch system of American government, executive, legislative and judicial that our founding fathers establihed is not doing what it’s suposed to do, that is, keep each branch functioning according to the US Constitution.
Obama is in his 26th month of a 48th month term in office and he hasn’t received any repremands from congress or the senate for his unconstitutional actions or even a simple slap on the wrist. If a Republican conservative and WHITE President had tried to do the things that Obama has done he or she would have been severely sensored or impeached by the senate. Obama’s gangster style administration needs to be reigned in and checked before he completely destroys our democracy and country.
Of course this is and has been the strategy from the “gitmo” or beginning of Obama’s presidency, ” Obama’s “ Fundamental transformation of America ”, simply means the destruction of the old conservative capitalistic system to replace it with a liberla progressive ( communist ) system. It’s hard for me to believe that this is what the majority of honest and hard working American citizens want. I refuse to accept the idea that Obama is doing what is best for our nation. Nothing could be further from the truth. God Bless America !

2 things here
1) Lower taxes for businesses ARE a good thing, people with money create jobs not people with no money. With that said businesses, especially ones that are so obviously in the pocket of the government, should not get away with paying no taxes at all. You misunderstand others distaste about this.
2)The others on here are wondering where the outcry from people who adamantly decried about businesses getting any tax cuts at all. That resounding thud of silence from those people pegs my hypocrisy meter. Basically echoing the seeming mantra of the Obama administration “do as I say, not as I do”

Posted on March 26, 2011 at 1:05pmRedneck, I said I thought it was wrong before I even read your post. So I’m with you on that.
But two things: according to Politifact: Between 1998 to 2005, GAO found that about 72 percent of large foreign controlled companies and 55 percent of large U.S. controlled companies reported zero tax liability for at least one year. It’s pure partisan nonsence to single out GE, and say they’re getting tax breaks because of him. They probably weren’t paying taxes under Bush either.

Posted on March 26, 2011 at 1:47pmcapitalism at its best. part of the reason we are broke is because the people and organizations with the most money, can also afford to figure out ways to not pay a friggin dime in taxes. GE isn’t the only one that gets away with this.

Posted on March 27, 2011 at 4:55pmWeird; this is so much like a book I read once where the sneaky owner of a big company uses strong-arm techniques and government favors to give himself tax breaks that his competitors don’t get…just replace the name “Jeffrey” with the name “Jim” (or maybe “Orren”) and the name “Charles” with the name “Wesley,” and it practically would become a page right out of the book. The author uses the phrase “The Aristocracy of Pull” to describe this phenomenon, of businesses’ success shifting from ability to produce to number of friends in Washington.
