Gun Battle Erupts on Texas Border

In a sign that the border is still not as safe as some U.S. officials would have us believe, a fierce shootout erupted on the Texas-Mexico border on Tuesday. In fact, reports say that armed gunmen crossed the border into the U.S., although its unclear if the men were criminals or Mexican law enforcement.
The Monitor reports witnesses saw several American law enforcement agencies, including a SWAT team and the U.S. Border Patrol, respond to the incident near Escobares. The outlet reports a shootout broke out just south of the Rio Grande earlier:
The shootout reportedly began shortly after noon but details were not immediately available. Residents on the U.S. side reported seeing members of the U.S. Border Patrol and Starr County Sheriff’s Office securing the area near the border.
Border Patrol spokeswoman Rosalinda Huey said agents had been tracking a suspected drug load near La Rosita and pushed it back to Mexico.
Border Patrol alerted Mexican authorities of the suspected load and then found an injured Mexican national on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande, Huey said. Emergency crews rushed the man to an area hospital. His condition remains unknown.
The man, a suspected cartel gunman, had been shot by Mexican authorities, a separate U.S. law enforcement official said.
The official confirmed a group of as many as 15 gunmen had crossed the Rio Grande, though it remained unclear whether they were Mexican soldiers or cartel gunmen.
One witness, ranch hand Ricardo Guerra, said his brother’s ranch became the epicenter for over 100 law enforcement officers.
“Yeah, you worry when that happens,” Guerra said. “We all went back inside the house. It looks like there was something going on over there (Mexico); we heard four or five shots from the helicopter. It looks like the (Mexican military) helicopter was shooting at the people on the ground over there.””

Posted on November 9, 2011 at 10:22amPicture the small tribes from hundreds of years ago. One tribe of 150 strong have maintained their lands and hunting within a healthy balance. They farm the land and hunt when they need to. They provide good housing for their families and take care of their sick best they can. They trade with other tribes in the area and are the envy of all. Who would not want to get into this system? The problem is that a healthy balance has to be maintained for the 150 they already have. Sorry charlie, there is no more room without expanding into others territories and steal from them. America is in that position today. We cannot forever be the caretaker for all peoples around the world. We could be if things were shared and we had less greed in this country but you would still need to earn you own way within our borders.

Posted on November 9, 2011 at 1:18pmI don‘t think most people don’t understand the gravity and potential threat of the cartels in Mexico.
Am investigative Mexican journalist who is an expert on the gangs there estimates total cartel members at about 100,000 boots on the ground, with each one armed with an AK 47 or M-16, mostly fully automatic assault rifles bought mainly from the black market and the stockpiles inundating Central and South America for years, due to their numerous armed conflicts.
The lefties here lie about these arms being furnished by sources in the US, but that’s a lie they use in order to bring pressure for abolishing guns. The cartels also have land mines, APC Carriers, rocket propelled grenades, M-60 machine guns, claymore mines, hand grenades and night vision equipment…..and more. It’s rumored they even have a drone now.
Economically, the gangs have more puchasing power for arms and ammo than most countries in the world, and while the entire globe is falling economically, the cartels are earning explosive profits on drugs. They’ve also expanded over into the prescription drug market, now selling Oxycontin and other pain killers which have surpassed cocaine as the drug of choice for many users.
The cartels have also expanded into the US, setting up at least 200 points of distribution per Janet
Napolitano’s calculations. Cartel members are edging into local governments.
As the US economy weakens, the cartels are growing stronger. Beware if the gangs unite.

The manner in which these absurd liquor laws are broken breeds contempt for law in general. Posted on November 9, 2011 at 9:56am@ Poor
Higher quality SKS rifles have decent accuracy and use a very common ammunition round. AR-10 and AR-15s are more prolific in the US, and use more common ammo, but you won’t go wrong with any of the three. Plus, with an SKS, it is easy to get a modification kit that allows you to turn it into a semi-tactical rifle with detachable magazines and folding/collapsible stocks. Or you can keep it vanilla, your choice :)

Posted on November 9, 2011 at 10:08amIf you get an AR style weapon, make sure it’s of the piston style and not the original gas impingement system. Report Post »Rothbardian_in_the_Cleve
Posted on November 9, 2011 at 10:13amIt depends on your budget I would say. You can get into an solid SKS for 250 to 300 (replacing the box mag for some Tapco detatchables) Ammo is cheep for them as well. However, I‘d say you’d want to look at the Chi-comms and not the warsaw pact versions (sans russia). They tend to age better, chrome lined, hold accuracy, etc. But, they are large, and heavy. Think a comm block M1 Garand with less accuracy and power.
The AR-10′s are very expensive but the Nato 7.62 rounds are very solid people stopping rounds. But in addition to the weapon being expensive so too are the ammo. Lastly, would be the AR-15′s. You can get into a solid setup for about a grand. Ammo is reasonable but more expensive than SKS. Stopping power can be a little less than stellar, but combat performance is very good and ammo variations can be found to deal with multiple situations. Size is a plus, as this weapon is a good blend of rifle perfomance but compact for cqb. Just my 2 cents.

Posted on November 9, 2011 at 1:08pmWell, Junior, I wish I could say the same of you. But I don’t expect more. You haven’t earned it. Yu say you’re i “management” – the vast wasteland of unrequited ambition and delusions of grandeur. Well I suggest you set a better example for your minions. I hate to think the private sector, you know the source of all the jobs and innovation and growth in our society, is actually populated by under-worked and overpaid mules and bureaucrats standing around watching Glenn Beck try to clean a fish.
There, that’s better.
Hey, break time! But remember to file those TPS reports by the end of the day. Happy Hump Day!

Posted on November 9, 2011 at 3:19pmMuch better sunshee, but you headed down the wrong street just a bit when it comes to what I do for a living. I appreciate you spending so much time articulating what is going on in that pea size brain of yours. I feel like you’ve given me a new career.
