Gunfire at Mexican Soccer Game Sends Players, Fans Scrambling for Cover

MEXICO CITY (The Blaze/AP) — A First Division Mexican soccer match was suspended Saturday after gunmen opened fire on police outside the stadium in the northern city of Torreon, causing players and referees to run for cover.

Local clubs Santos and Morelia were tied 0-0 at the 40-minute mark when the shots were heard inside the stadium.

Televised footage showed the players and referees dashing off the field to take cover inside the stadium. Santos’ Argentine forward Emanuel Luduena ran with his child in his arms.

Fans, many with children, ducked for cover, trying to lie flat against their seats and hundreds ran onto the field to move away from the sound of the gunfire outside TSM stadium.

Torreon police and local soccer officials said the attack left one police officer injured, but no one was hurt inside the stadium.

Gunmen opened fire on a police patrol near the stadium, said Fernando Olivas, the regional delegate for Coahuila state‘s attorney general’s office.

“The public security vehicle was attacked by unidentified gunmen outside TSM and the preliminary information we have is that one policeman was injured,” Olivas told Milenio TV.

Santos team president Alejandro Irarragorri went to the center of the field, accompanied by goaltender Oswaldo Sanchez, to announce that the game had been suspended.

“In the Santos club, we feel bad for the time in which we are living. It is evident that the game will be suspended,” Irarragorri told the crowd. “You can be assured that we will try to control these situations. We are sorry for Morelia, the referees and those who are visiting us from elsewhere.”

It is the first premiere league game that has been canceled in Mexico because of drug violence, though last year a baseball game was suspended in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, because of a similar incident.

Police did not say who the gunmen were, but Torreon has recently been the scene of fighting between the powerful Sinaloa and Zetas drug cartels.

Torreon is located about 621 miles north of Mexico City in the border state of Coahuila.

The Mexicans (82% here illegally) are much more civil here in the U.S. They do not fire guns; rather, they attack, assault, and beat to a pulp with their fists any American who acknowledges they support an opposing team. They are, fro the most part, barbarians.

You all have missed the key issue; it’s 40 minutes into a game people pay hard-earned money to attend and the score is — as always — 0-0!

I‘m sure there are avid Mexican soccer fans in their 90s who can vividly recall every goal they’ve ever seen in the entirely of their lifetimes. Who can blame them for a bit of frustration?

This is bad reporting. I know less after reading it then before. How was it related to drugs? Why did the gunman fight with the police?

There is mahem in Mexico. Soldiers ride around in vehicles that look like Somalian Technicals with huge guns on them. Every building needs a guard 24 hours otherwise things disappear.

    Blame it on chaos.

Obama should be impeached for ‘fast and furious’. He interferred with a nation at peace with us on our border and caused thousands of their people to be killed and even some Americans. He is a socialist/communist maniac.
As for as Mexico…their only answer is total war with the cartels where people are killed on- sight and whole neighborhoods are burnt to the ground.

Have you noticed trhat Mexico is like Phillie – NYC – DC and Chicago! Only the cops- Military and the drug cartels have guns. A private average citizen can’t get a carry permit. If Mexico would let everyone over age 21 have a permit and guns alll their problems will go away. At first there would be a cleaning effect and the all would be peacfull.

Mexico is a lost cause…. (for Mexicans), Mexican‘s don’t have the balls to stand up and fight for their own country, instead they all flee to the U.S. illegally… then when they are here they praise their own goverment and put the U.S. down… Mexicans have no one to blame but themselves… it is time for them to all go home and fight the war that should have been fought 50 years ago…

You are correct. I live in South Texas. So many are here illegally. They don’t hide anymore. They play their narcocorridos blasting from their rim spinning suburbans. They have foodstamps and do not speak any English at all. I see it everyday and I am repulsed. The Mexican nation was once the strongest on earth. An empire at one time. The Mexican people are losing their nation and have been for some time. They have no real voice and the cartels run everything. They need to have the right to bear arms and defend themselves responsibly. They should not come to this country illegally and degrade it, by adding more burdens to our economic system. They do not pay respect and allegiance to the United States, and of course pay zero taxes. The Mexican people need to take their nation back. Make it great again. The United States has to so the same, but we need to take it back from the Fed Reserve, and political demons sent to ruin us all. Mexico will be a needed ally if the fight with Islamists continue.Mexico is 95% Christian/Catholic. Get it together Mexico!! The U.S. can no longer carry your people!!! We’re falling apart here!!!
