Gunman in Iraqi Army Uniform Kills Two U.S. Soldiers

According to the Associated Press, two U.S. soldiers are dead after a gunman in an Iraqi army uniform opened fire in Northern Iraq. No other information is available at this time. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.

While it is unclear if the shooter was a legitimate Iraqi soldier, a similar event occurred in May 2009 near the Iraqi City of Mosul where the gunman was simply posing as an Iraqi soldier. Two soldiers were killed, as well as three others injured, during that attack.

UPDATE: Below is the latest information from the AP:

BAGHDAD (AP) — The U.S. military says a gunman wearing an Iraqi army uniform has killed two American soldiers in northern Iraq.

A military statement says the Americans were among a group of U.S. soldiers meeting with Iraqi security forces Tuesday at an Iraqi army compound near the city of Tuz Khormato, about 130 miles (210 kilometers) north of Baghdad.

They were the first U.S. military deaths since President Barack Obama declared an end to combat operations on Aug.

UPDATE:

According to Yahoo news, the gunman was killed during the attack. BNO News is reporting that nine others were injured in the attack, although the AP is not reporting any other injuries.

Try changing armbands, constantly. If someone has the wrong armband, disarm him, till he is identified. Some may still get through, but most won’t know which armband is being used.

I can‘t speak for Iraqi’s, but I have trained Afghans, and the most disappointing thing was their country was slowly being tugged from their grasp, and they just were not serious about saving it….Hmmn sounds familiar.

As a veteran of the Iraq campaign and having worked in some of the more high profile areas of Iraq, this is something that will happen regardless of any type of security force or outside occupation of the country. The asymmetrical war that we are currently fighting is guerilla warfare at its prime. These types of attacks are hard to counter or protect from without having a good network of intelligence in the area that you are operating in. Our redeployment of troops along with the Iraqi’s poor security forces are going to make attacks like this more and more common, especially once the last American boot is off the ground.

I believe the Iraq campaign was a necessary endeavor for many reasons. 1. Establish a forward base for theater operations. 2. Remove an enemy of the United States from further non-compliance to resolutions of the United Nations, and 3.The enforcement of the Rules drawn up at the end of the “First Gulf War.”
Saddam was in control of this outcome. This was not a sneak attack.
The time was ripe for a show of force after the attack on 9/11/2001; and the politics of terrorism have been trumped by military might. The fight continues… constantly… because the number of voices in opposition to the war exemplifies the enemy’s tactics.
The outcome is never certain, but our goal is.

Unfortunately; all of us as Americans are going to have to accept that many more soldiers are going to be injured and killed even though our President has announced, that “war time operations in Iraq have ended.” Why? Because the “enemy” has not made the “same end-of-war announcement”.

I wish it were not so, but, our military has decided to enforce “Rules of Engagement” that require our US troops to not “shoot first ask questions later”, which puts them at risk. I completely understand the argument that for the “longer term goals” of peace, then, the US military has to reduce civilian casualties in Iraq and Afghanastan, to ensure that local people will stop “hating us” for each civilian death, and therefore, will stop supporting the enemy forces.

However, this “macro-goal” means that for the people on the ground, (aka The Troops), they will suffer injuries and even death, in order to hopefully achieve the “larger political goals”. I know this. I am glad that my children are “too young” to be sent into this type of “Catch -22″ situation. (note they are in Jr ROTC and respect all that the military stands for.)

We as a country should stop using our “military as police or nation-builders”. It is not “fair” to them, to ask them to “hold your fire”, in a war-zone, situation when, so few of the “political and executive class of this country” have their own children serviing in harm’s way. Do you really think if the bodies coming home in caskets, were from the “upper middle class” in this country, that these “soft rules of engagment” would be in place? I serious doubt it.

Each week, there is a “role call” of the killed that appears on the national news shows on Sunday morning. Take a look and you will see that the soldiers who are dying are mostly from the “small, patriotic little towns” of America, or sometimes the “inner city” poor. Look at the “Addresses and Towns” of the soldier’s who have died and really “think” about where these heroes came from.

The people fighting…(our troops)..are NOT the upper middle class kids going to college, with dad on Wall Street, and mom the Lawyer. Instead, they are “the other” America. The patriotic, small town, boy scouts, and girl scouts, who have watched the local “manufacturing plant” that dad worked at get “outsourced to China” 10 years ago, by some Wall Street person with an MBA from….(Fill in the Blank) who made “millions” from the “deal”, while dad got laid off. Of course not everyone is “poor”, but, to deny that the majority of soldiers came from small towns, lower-income and lower-opportunity areas, is to deny reality.

That is unfortunately, the “Real Story” of the continued Iraq, and Afghanastan conflicts. One small group of Americans doing all the fighting and dying, while the rest of America is basically “uneffected”, and is “heading to Starbucks for a Latte.”

Anyone who thinks we have won this war in Iraq is sadly mistaken. The troops over there have done an amazing job and I am thankful for them every single day. They have done this amazing job not because of…but in SPITE of American policies of engagement. It is absolutely amazing to me that we and our allies seem to be the only ones who are held to such stringent combat restrictions. These restrictions have not only handcuffed our fine men and woment bearing arms in Iraq, but have emboldened our enemies. The “end to combat operations” has done nothing but given the insurgency the green light to step up their operations.

Since the day the U.S. made it public that we would end operations on a specific date and/or withdraw by a specific date from both Iraq and Afghanistan, our enemies have lied in wait, striking just enough to remind us they are still there. Once we are gone though, I promise you all hell will break loose.

This is a holy war, make no mistake about it. There is no possible way to win a holy war particularly when the societies we are trying to help base their whole existence on their religion.

Dont blame religion because your an athiest. Religion is nothing more than a belief in something. Do you believe there is no God? Then that is your Religion or ‘Belief’. Whether you would got to blows over your belief is based on how much faith you have in your belief. The bottom line is we dont believe what they do so therefore you are an enemy and you must be killed. So its not Religion but glad to see your at least a Conservative.

No real surprise to anyone who has studied previous conflicts we have been involved in. The real question is, will this gunman (if he is caught) be treated as a terrorist, combatant, or prisoner of war. Or will he just be tunned over to the military and/or civilian courts in Iraq?

None of us here have anything but respect for them and sorrow for those who will have to live their lives without them. we are all diminished with their passing from our number. Great people have fallen and many more may follow them. it is our place to Raise hell here and change things so that their sacrifice will not be forgotten or derided by little people with no humanity left.

what if we pull every soldier Home, and build mega-bases in every single state of the US, and have our soldiers, like the Roman Army soldiers did in Britain, build a Hadrian’s Wall along the Southern border. and like China did in the distant mists of Time. frightened “Americans” wanted HOPE & CHANGE, well, we’re PROUD CHRISTIAN AMERICANS, we rush out and save the world over and over again, no one ever helpos us. we rush out feed everyone else globally while our own jobless people can’t get food stamps here. and we can finally QUIT THE WORLD, we should just let it go to Hell UNLESS IT HELPS US, and we can take care of ONLY OURSELVES for a change. we are not the world’s birth control police, doctors or policemen. so the world crumbles and starves, so what. the ancients built their Great Wall of China and Hadrian’s Wall without backhoes and bulldozers and cranes like we have today. with the Right PRESIDENT in our nation we can seal that border and RESTORE AMERICA FIRST.

That is an interesting statement, but Roman didn’t have Planes, Missiles and Nuclear bomb’s to worry about. Also Ancient civilizations didn‘t turn out almost all of it’s manufacturing. Close off the world would mean no trade. No Trade would mean no manufactured goods. It will not succeed. They tried before WW1.

We need to protect ourselves first. As our founders told us, stay out of other countries affairs. Be neutral. But when we cannot be neutral we must not give the enemy our exit plans.

Being a former Marine, it saddens me that these two soldiers have been killed and nine comrades wounded. I pray the Lord our God watches over America’s service members in harms way. I also pray that the government of the United States of America learns from the past and stop’s giving away information that will harm our military.

To my fallen friends: May St Peter welcome you at the gates and may the Marine guards have a toast ready for your arrival. Peace be with you now and forever.

The Israels have done the same thing on there borders. Nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it. Many Americans for decades have wanted to be isolationist. The fact is we have been attacked for years by RADICAL ISLAM JIHADIST. The first war America fought was in 1805 and we have to remember this time they attacked OUR homeland and are plotting more attacks. Thank you for this post. The response I see is the “seeing the forest, but not the trees.” Yes, the death of my fellow soldiers is just a symptom of the larger events and the cultural mindest of some in Iraq. None the less, two of our heroes have fallen. Your thoughts and prayers for them and those that loved them are spot on target.

Iraq will not change because of a deadline or a piece of paper. Iraq will only change when the people begin to understand that they have more to live for than to die for. When life has hope, true hope, of a greater future we will see a glorious day in all of Iraq and the Middle East.

They say its why they are there..Freedom. It went hot because of Obama. Petraeus is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is covering Obama’s hind end for him. But there is no such thing as Liberty in Iraq, Obedience is only to Allah.” we should have nuked it & Afghanistan back to the dusty sandy Stone Age (they are just short of it anyway) in 2003 and just saved ourselves 4200 American soldiers and the money.

We cant give people freedom they have to fight for it. They lived under tyrant that they did not oppose and will again; until they are ready to make the same sacrifices we did.
