BERKELEY, Calif. (The Blaze/AP) — A day of demonstrations by students and anti-Wall Street activists was disrupted Tuesday when a campus police officer shot a man with a gun about a half-mile from the main protest site at the University of California, Berkeley.
The shooting occurred inside the Haas School of Business as hundreds of demonstrators left an outdoor plaza at the university for a march to demonstrate outside a bank.
Officials did not know if the suspect was part of the Occupy Cal movement, said Ute Frey, a spokeswoman for the university.
“I just hope it wasn’t from the protest or the movement, because that’s not what the movement is about,” said Sadia Saif, a 19-year-old sophomore at UC Berkeley.
University officials said a man carrying a gun was seen by a female staff member in an elevator at the business school after 2 p.m. The staff member called police at 2:17 p.m., saying she saw the man remove the gun from a backpack.
Police said they arrived at 2:19 p.m., and had to locate the suspect in the building. Officers found the suspect in a third-floor computer room where there were at least four students, university officials said.
The suspect raised the gun and was shot by an officer, according to the school. The condition of the 33-year-old suspect was not immediately known. His name was not released.
Dong Hwan Kim, 27, a senior, said he was terrified when he learned of the shooting.
“The shooting, in addition to what’s happening here with the protests, makes the campus feel really tense,” Kim said. “This is a historical moment, but it is also really scary at the same time.”
Protesters descended on the university after ReFund California, a coalition of student groups and university employee unions, called for a campus strike, and protesters marched and rallied to protest banks and budget cuts to higher education.
Earlier in the day, more than 1,000 students, campus employees, faculty and other demonstrators filled an outdoor plaza after many took part in teach-ins. The plaza was covered with banners that read “stop the cuts” and “educate the state.”
“If the only people who can come here in the future are those who have money, it‘s going to hurt everyone’s educational experience,” said Daniel Rodriguez, 28, a graduate student who was conducting an introductory Spanish language class outside.
Bands played on the steps of the plaza, as hundreds of students gathered for a noon-time rally billed as a kickoff for a day of activities that included a speech by UC Berkeley professor and former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich.
Occupy Oakland activists were marching to the campus Tuesday after police cleared a tent city outside Oakland City Hall on Monday amid complaints about safety and sanitation, and arrested 33 people.
Occupy Cal activists said they would try again to establish an encampment Tuesday night, when Reich is scheduled to deliver his speech on class warfare on the steps of Sproul Hall.
On Nov. 9, baton-wielding police clashed with protesters who tried to set up tents and arrested 40 people as the university sought to uphold a campus ban on camping.
UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau launched an investigation into allegations that campus police used excessive force. He said videos of the protests were disturbing, and he plans to grant amnesty to all students who were arrested and cited for attempting to block police from removing the tents.
“The events of last Wednesday are unworthy of us as a university community,” Birgeneau wrote in a letter Monday to the campus.
Oscar Varela, 21, a fifth-year economics major who helped organize Tuesday’s demonstrations, was among the students who tried to block campus police from tearing down the campus encampment.
The Occupy Cal activists planned to vote on re-establishing a camp on campus at 5 p.m. at its general assembly meeting.
“We want to stay here to prove to the regents and state that we are part of this movement and that we want our tuition to go back to what it used to be, which essentially should be free,” Varela said.
UC Berkeley officials were determined Tuesday to avoid a repeat of last week’s violence, said campus spokesman Dan Mogulof.
“We will learn from what happened and do everything that‘s necessary to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he said.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 12:01amIt looks very much like a time will come where conservatives will have to take arms against these rioters to protect themselves and the freedom of America..What about our rights to enjoy a park or go to the city without fear? Or we can sit back on our couch while this movement gets larger and they take the government and destroy this country. The financial damage already caused is in the 100′s of millions.. I’m wondering if all this is going to the Soros and obama plan..

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 3:37amIt is inevitable. You have until the elections, maybe. Prepare yourself. Stock up. Buy tac gear and ammo. Train your family in the use and care of firearms, as well as self defense. Learn military strategy, and become well versed in squad based tactics. There are undeniable links between the turncoats in office, and the real homegrown terrorists leading this movement. They are committing treason, and no one will report it. WE are going to have to clean up this mess.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 5:30amThat is exactly what the Stoic-Sophist based Socialists and Communists want you to do. Then they move in with Martial law and contain the entire country under military rule with their dictator at the helm. Once that occurs, the constitution is suspended and all rights for the individual are revoked. We will exist in a communist military state, which is the purpose of this entire event.
However if you hold out until the European double dip recession begins (early 2012) and until the Russia-Iran-Iraq oil pack begins, then the US dollar will drop in value by some 50% or better. The financial shock to the world sill break us free of this Communist lead, OWS October revolution. We should see this emerge over the next 24 months, as the Muslim brotherhood gels the Middle East into a single state. The idea is to Squeeze Saudi into submission which is occurring as we speak.
Russia has been after dominance of all energy resources for some two decades now. It dominates natural gas and Nuclear plutonium, its now out to dominate oil. Once Russia has control of all the energy resources, it controls the countries who depend on them for those resources (entire EU and Asia). China therefore is only as strong as Russia allows it to become. The same is true of the USA. Russia will move to secure Alaska once it secures the Middle East, so it controls the vast majority of the worlds oil resources. With a communist USA, Russia will dominate the entire world.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 10:37pmI thought any kind of gun carry was illegal in California. It’s weird, but it seems like criminals don’t want to obey the laws. They know what the laws are, but they just keep carrying firearms anyway. It‘s almost like they don’t care. I wonder what would happen if a law abiding citizen were faced with a situation where a criminal had a firearm and pointed it at them.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t run faster than a bullet and I know that if was able to call the police, I would be dead by the time they arrived. I guess the law abiding citizens are just gonna have to suck it up and die.

@Gray, if the firearm was legally purchased and the person carrying it has no criminal background and is not involved in the commission of a crime (i.e. no affiliation with organized crime) the case would be thrown out of court without going to trial. The cases that proceed in court involve more than simple possession and carry. The anti-gun lobby knows it doesn’t serve their interests to pursue a Second Amendment case purely against the “individual” Constitutional right. The recent SCOTUS decisions in the Heller and McDonald cases have made this a non-starter.

duh
Report Post »PubliusPencilman
Posted on November 16, 2011 at 12:30pmAh… I see. But if nuclear weapons still don’t kill people, you should have no problem with them having them, right? You’ve already conceeded that we abridge the second amendment rights of people society judges to have a proclivity towards violence, so from there it is just a matter if degree and implimentation. This goes back to my earlier point regarding the limits of a right when considering public safety.

Only thing that will come out of the occupy lie is escalation into more shooting and killings. These people are dangerous, misguided and angry. Funny the media when nuts when some people showed up at TEA Party events open carrying weapons. I dont recall any shootings at any of these events where people were clearly packing and attacked for it. Occupy they bring guns to USE them not invoke/ exercise the 2A rights.
TEA Party people and conservatives are warned to stay away, let these animals devour each other. Personally I would order a perimeter set up around all occupy events, “arm” police with helmet cams or the VIEVU and let the occupy animals run loose destroying & vandalizing private property, commit assaults etc and do nothing to stop it other than film it for the world to see. Then the cops can upload all the footage themselves since the “World Is Watching”! Show the world and hopefully those still asleep in the US who may side with occupy people who they really are. From there we can easily tie them to democrats, celebrities, special interests, Soros etc etc that have come to their aid. At that point they lose the PR war and become nothing but the joke we all know on a global scale!
Its not about beating them its about letting them hang themselves if you follow me. They want to play these games fine we need to make the rules as it goes along! http://SavingtheRepublic.com

It is quite likely that the damage will be greater than it is today, but I think it can be dealt with and reversed. You need to wait your turn.
Only in case of an attempt to subvert the constitution by suspending elections (or blatant rigging of), then you’d have all the legal instruments accorded by constitution and bill of rights to reverse that and restore them by any means to your disposal.
