It’s not easy being the parent of an Olympic athlete.
After supporting your children with everything from training to outfits since childhood, many parents, it seems, actually feel like they are performing– like somehow, if they just will certain things to happen, it will all go according to plan.
Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman’s parents– mother Lynn and father Ricky– are no different.
Though Raisman stunned the world with her performance on Sunday, Gawker has declared that a clip of her parents watching the performance is equally entertaining.
“You have to watch U.S. gymnast Aly Raisman’s parents react to her bar routine,” they write, adding: “Dear NBC: for training your cameras on this, everything is forgiven,” referencing NBC’s gaffe in teasing the winner of yesterday’s races when everyone already knew the outcome.
Watch the NBC video (via YouTube), below– and we dare you not to laugh once her parents start squirming in sync around halfway through:
Seemingly aware of how ridiculous they may have appeared, Raisman’s father let out a loud “Aah!” for the cameras as his daughter’s performance ended.
Yahoo Sports linked to another YouTube clip of the event with the comment: “Aly Raisman’s parents have an extraordinarily hard time watching their daughter compete.”
But let’s be honest: we would all look equally ridiculous if our children were performing in the Olympics.

When are we going to rid ourselves of these idioticly perverted copyright laws and return to sanity?

Posted on July 31, 2012 at 7:49amYou know this is what parents are supposed to be. They know how much they have sacrificed to be there and once more they know how much their DAUGHTER has put into and sacrificed to be there at that level. It is completely nerve racking to have your child who has everything on the line be out there on her own like that. Also knowing how much it means to HER makes it all that much more difficult to sit through I’m sure!!! It‘s a kin to watching your kid ride their bike for the first time or get on a school bus for the first time except for it’s probably times about 10,000!!!!! I love that they were right there in the moment with her, feeling her effort and “feeling her pain” so to speak. It goes to show how much they are behind her and support her 110%. They‘re there for her and it’s extremely obvious. I‘m sure that she knows that her parents understand what she’s going through, how much she has to demand from herself and feels her victories and her failures right along with her. It’s important to know that your parents are there for you and that they understand w/o necessarily being told. They aren’t perfect none of us are but this is a clue to how much they care and love their daughter and she is lucky to have them both there and to know that they are living it with her. Good job parents I’ll be squirming at my kids soccer games soon right along with you.

Posted on July 30, 2012 at 1:21pmThat was great, but what is not great is the fact the world champion (Wieber )was deliberately underscored and over penalized to put a black girl in the finals. The fix was in ,Americas newest media darling Gabby is nowhere near as good. This was so obvious. And no I am not a racist, I do not care what color you are this was a injustice. SAD!!

Posted on July 30, 2012 at 1:57pm@ Chris Bacon,
Report Post »I politely disagree with your assertion. You are applying too much speculation to arrive at your conclusion that a deliberate underscore took place, based on affirmative action. Aside from the fact that you appear to be ignoring the other caucasian challenger, Raisman, in your argument, this is an especially challenging hurdle for you to mount considering the floor exercise judges were applying a particularly hard standard to that event across the board. Wieber was not the only top rated gymnast present to receive a lesser score on the floor. Douglas’ performance throughout the day was exceptional. She set the standard so exceptionally high that even with the massive gaff on floor and a miserly score of 13.7666, Wieber had to achieve 14.899 or better to get past Douglas and make it to all around. Despite the difficulty of her routine Wieber’s step out of bounds cost her the spot, she had a final score of 14.666. Douglas performance wasn’t really that big a surprise, she was expected to be a solid contender for all around from the beginning. It was Raisman that was the true dark horse and came out of no where to snatch the all around from Wieber. It stinks in alot of ways but affirmative action is not one of the stenches this time around. My argument aside I am saddened for Wieber, I do not care for the sport’s new system of measurement nor how the system enables a world champion to lose an opportunity arguably well earned.

Posted on July 30, 2012 at 11:06amAs a former gymnast I can totally understand Aly Raeisman’s parents reaction. I did it watching the girls last night and I have no ties to them whatsoever. The funnier thing is if you watched it last night the mother dropped the “F-bomb” via mouthing it under her breadth (they stopped it right before on this video). It was quite funny…Because I know if that were me watching my daughter I would have done the exact same thing. Good Luck to Aly!! Go For The Gold!!

Posted on July 30, 2012 at 8:44amI agree with you but politics and abandonment of morality enters every human endeavor when the stakes are very high. Olympic champions are not just used by nations for bragging rights. Olympic champions cash in for personal wealth. Don’t just blame the Olympics. Winning is such a worldwide obsession, it caused serial pedophilia by a football coach to go unchallenged at Penn State University for years even though it is one of the most disgusting crimes on Earth.

Posted on July 30, 2012 at 4:25amI can’t believe what has happened to the Olympics, but it really shouldn’t surprise me with the entire world being one big socialist playground. I hope Glenn uses the women’s gymnastics team as a teachable moment on what socialism is really about, destroying the talented for some irrational concept of equality. One of the top 10 scoring gymnasts in the world is going to miss the all around competition because some egalitarian idiots on the Olympic committee decided for “fairness” they where going to make the Olympics not about determining the best all around gymnast in the world, but rather, about making each country feel good about themselves. It is quite disgusting, and I am no fan of gymnastics, but am a fan of destroying this phony notion of equality wherever it rears its ugly head. Let the truly talented put their God given gifts on display for all humanity to witness, don‘t let some super committee of liberal imbeciles determine who is and who isn’t good enough to compete at the highest level.

Posted on July 30, 2012 at 7:07amYesterday was the preliminaries and qualifying for the individual ‘all around’ competition. Jordan Weiber finished 4th place out of all the girls in the competition. But because USA had a GREAT day, Jordan Weiber finished 3rd on the USA team. The rules were changed last year to allow only two girls from each country into the ‘all around’ competition. Jordan Weiber misses out and her goal of becoming the best gymnast is over.
So Jordan Weiber, who finished 4th overall, will not be allowed to compete in the event suppposedly for the ‘top 24’ gymnasts. By the way, Jordan Weiber is the reigning world champion.
Report Post »chris p bacon
Posted on July 30, 2012 at 1:27pmYou are right, and to add to your thought, BTW, Weiber was deliberately over penalized and underscored, in order to get a Black girl in… Think what you want it, if you watched it last night you know its true. No I am not a racist, if the entire team was black yellow and red I would say the same.

Posted on July 30, 2012 at 4:40pmUnfortunately the rules stated that only two athletes per country in gymnastics can qualify into the all around (which I completely disagree with). I think that if you participate in all of the events in gymnastics in the qualifying round and you make the top 24 (which is the maximum number of gymnasts that can participate in the all around), you should qualify no matter what country you come from.

Posted on July 30, 2012 at 2:45amWhat I think about is all the times the gymnasts made a mistake on that thing, as they inevitably would as they were learning.
A lot of pain and a lot of sacrifice. I know at the end of the day that it was all worth it, but that takes enormous dedication from all three of them.
I have nothing but admiration and congratulations.
