Meet ‘FrankenKindle’ – An E-reader Created for a Handicapped User

An electrical engineer named Glenn (not Beck) deconstructed an Amazon Kindle in an effort to help his sister — who has cerebral palsy — be able to read more books. By adding some larger control buttons from a different device, the electronic reader can now become a valuable tool for Glenn’s sister. The video posted below has won the admiration of many on the Internet and may have shown Amazon how their e-reader can be adapted to allow millions of people with disabilities to use these handy devices.

This is the third video from Glenn the engineer. See more clips of the early stages of Glenn’s enterprising experiment HERE.

I read this on Hack-a-Day http://hackaday.com/ . Next step, a Cease and Desist order from Amazon. No one in America is permitted to innovate outside of the auspices of a corporate master.

Cool. Technology and adaptation being used to normalize a person’s life… instead of just another venue for porn. I work with a speech therapist who is using iPads to replace expensive and limited augmentative communication devices. Smart and effecient people will find a way to help folks while thinking outside that ol’ box. Way to go, Glenn!!!

I worked at Atari in the 70s when video games were only being made for arcades around the world. A guy in my department that tested my work set up hand controls to test the games as they passed through. We would jump around and play the games during our breaks and Noland came in and saw this set up and left in a hurry which was unusual as he liked to hang with up. We were all laid off several weeks later and Atari came out with a home version of the Atari very soon after that.

Love this product, but not the name. Frankenkindle is a little to close to Frankenstein for me….especially since this is some to help the handicapped.

He named it that because he took parts from something else to add to it. It makes sense when you think about it.

If this guy could get the funding to make it smaller and more easily adaptable to the Kindle this guy could create his own American dream.
