LulzSec Hackers Attack AZ Law Enforcement, Release Phone Numbers of Officers and Spouses

PHOENIX (The Blaze/AP) — A group that boasts of successfully hacking Sony and the Senate and CIA web pages in recent months claimed Thursday to have hacked into the computer files of an Arizona law enforcement agency. The attacked, it said, was motivated by Arizona’s immigration policy.
The Lulz Security hacking collective said on its web site that it was releasing “hundreds of private intelligence bulletins, training manuals, personal email correspondence, names, phone numbers, addresses and passwords belonging to Arizona law enforcement.”
The cyber attackers said they were specifically targeting the Arizona Department of Public Safety because of the state’s tough immigration enforcement law known as SB1070 “and the racial profiling anti-immigrant police state that is Arizona.”
Several DPS officers contacted by The Associated Press said they were inundated with calls Thursday evening and most were trying to get their phone number immediately changed.
The LulzSec group also said it planned to release “more classified documents and embarrassing personal details of military and law enforcement” every week but it was unclear whether other Arizona agencies were targeted.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office was taking unspecified countermeasures to protect its computer system, officials said Thursday night.
Manuel Johnson, a spokesman for the FBI’s Phoenix division, said the agency was aware of the DPS‘ situation but couldn’t comment on whether the FBI was investigating it.
DPS spokesman Steve Harrison confirmed that the agency‘s computer system had been breached and was taking additional security safeguards that he wouldn’t disclose. The Arizona Republic reported that experts worked Thursday evening to close external access to DPS’ system.
However, that didn’t help several DPS officers who said either their home phone or cellphone were constantly ringing Thursday with many of the calls from strangers.
“Well, they got my cellphone. It’s not a good thing,” said officer Steven Loya, whose email and home address also were posted on the LulzSec site.
Loya said he was inundated with calls and emails and was in the process of getting his phone number changed.
DPS officer Daniel Scott also seemed poised to get a new number.
“I’ve never had it happen before. It’s getting real annoying,” Scott said. “I let the department know and hopefully they can figure it out. I might have to change my phone number. It’s all over the world.”
Scott said he first heard about the posting when a media outlet called him. After that, he called DPS headquarters in Phoenix.
Then, the calls started coming.
“One said he was student out of California or something like that, sounded like a teenager,” Scott said. “He was trying to help me out because he knows that all my stuff was posted on the Internet.”
Scott said none of the phone calls have been threatening – “as of yet.”
LulzSec has taken credit for hacking into Sony Corp. – where more than 100 million user accounts were compromised – and defacing the PBS website as well as a cyber-attacking the CIA website and the U.S Senate computer system.

But, one of the things that allow us to provide those opportunities is that we are a nation of laws. So, they are mad that the laws that make our country great and full of opportunity, are keeping them from coming here because they are too lazy to start their immigration process in a way that upholds and respects these same laws and customs.

Prank calls are not illegal. Harassment may be, but it‘s more likely that 300 DIFFERENT people made all the phone calls to the cop’s phones, in which case, NONE of them are harassing him.
Just saying, don‘t hate on Anonymous just because you don’t understand them.

You’re in an indefensible position by defending these people and/or their motives. One does not need to “understand” Anonymous to understand the law and to know when it has been broken.
You’re also mistaken about the ability to identify hackers. This is merely a matter of effort. Hackers get caught all the time. The reason that these people have gotten away with it so far is mostly due to the level of the crimes they’ve committed. Escalating the crimes will certainly escalate the level of efforts to identify and arrest.

When private family phone numbers, etc. are put out into the public realm, it’s meant to intimidate the families. And it is “terror” if it ever happened to you, having your family members, or even your children threatened (I know this to be true from personal experience). Would you want you or YOUR family exposed to creeps calling you at all hours of the day or night? I bet the answer is, “No.”

More than just La Raza; think on this, by targeting the law enforcment officers, they set the stage for people to challenge the officers every actions with even more pressure upon them – on their jobs they will have to worry about any action carrying retaliation against their families.
If an arrest is made, then a defendant can claim the arrest is made due to the release of the information and therefore makes it a discrimination arrest or such on behalf of the officer in retaliation.
More pressure is put on the officers, those who detest law enforcement in general will use this to put more pressure on the system yet again until something gives; then they will blame the officers for a corrupt and out of control system.
Target the law officers, force their hands, and get many to overeact or quit when it becomes too much for them to stand; just as happened in Mexico and many Central American and European lands.

Make an EXAMPLE of these juvenile delinquents – I doubt they are actually under-age, just immature.
arrest. charge. try. convict. punish.
make a part of their punishment, they are NEVER allowed to utilize the internet – no pc, no iphone, no ipad, no web-enabled-refrigerator, no tivo, no web-enabled-tv, nothing.
Separately,
What the hell are police records doing connected to the internet?
We have lost our respect for the privacy of others.
We have lost respect for the value/importance of data.
We MUST stop using our nephew to plug in a $30 router to connect a police station to the internet!
States need to legislate security standards for their state and local agencies, that includes annual testing.
Companies need to review their security.
ALL OF THE ABOVE need to TEST their own security.
There are trustworthy, reliable, secure, private services that will do this and help you identify weaknesses in your networks.
Lastly, national security systems need to be proprietary, incompatible with commercially available systems, connected over leased-lines, not the internet! To declassify content, it would have redacted, then ‘sneaker-netted’ to a clearinghouse where the data would be translated to civilian compatible formats – then sneaker-netted again to civilian linked systems.
