Hackers Redirect Wawa Gas Station Website Over Prices to Page With Hitler Image

On Friday, hackers overtook the homepage of the Wawa gas station and convenience store, redirecting it to their own website with an image of Adolf Hitler.

Philadelphia’s CBS Local reports the group UGNazi claimed responsibility for the attack on its Twitter account (@UG) and also threatened that controlling of the gas pumps themselves are next. CBS Local reports the redirect to UGNazi’s website from Wawa was intermittent and remedied by Saturday.

The Delaware County Daily Times in Pennsylvania reports a spokesperson for Wawa saying that the company had remedied the situation with their domain server and emphasizing that “it is certainly not something we condone.”

The group’s website, which portrays a cartoon version of Hitler and says “Welcome Nazis,” discusses their reasons for hacking, which include companies supporting two bills introduced into the legislature this year: CISPA (the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act) and SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act).

A day after its attack, UGNazi announced on Twitter it had also “joined forces” with the hacktivist collective Anonymous.

Update: The Blaze initially reported the hackers defaced Wawa’s homepage when in fact they redirected traffic to their own website. The Blaze contacted Wawa’s representative Lori Bruce who said there was no impact of the redirect on any of the gas stations or other operations. She also said an investigation showed interal operations were not impacted either. “We have no evidence of a breach beyond the website redirection,” Bruce said in an email to the Blaze. “Some customers may have experienced the inconvenience of being redirected to an imposter homepage for a brief period of time over the weekend.”

Bruce emphasized that Wawa’s website was not altered, but that this “was a DNS redirection to a counterfeit site.”

I had to google what a Wawa was! Easily explained by the fact I’ve been all over the US, but never farther north or east than Chicago, never been to the Mid-Atlantic area they dominate.
Perhaps the Blaze could have tacked on a little paragraph or sentence, such as ‘Wawa, a large chain of convenience stores in the Mid-Atlantic states” and it would have saved many the confusion.

My family LOVES WAWA. We always try to use them when traveling. Sadly they are not in NC. They make a really good sandwich that actually has meat ( hint subway) and a good variety of food to keep you on the road. Top notch. Go after CITGO if you need a target.

Wawa’s got the best gas prices where I live.

I guess the question becomes just how inexpensive should stuff be so these morons won’t call you a Nazi? If we give stuff away for free, how do we get stuff after all the free stuff is gone? Why would I or any business make something if its just going to be given away???

This Wawa station reminds me of a similar chain we have in Texas called Buc ee’s. Buc ee’s has better gas prices than anyplace else as well, and they also have souvenir gift shops, huge sandwiches overflowing with MEAT. They will probably go after them next.

ADD THIS TO THE ARTICLE: Wawa has the CHEAPEST gas prices in the tri-state area and does countless acts of charity for its surrounding community. This “hacking” couldn’t have been more misdirected.

Did you read the whole article? The reasons they did it was not gas prices but:

Hmmm, lets see. Wawa sells gas that they buy making 4-5 Cents per gallon. Their prices are dictated by regulations and taxes from the government. They employ thousands of workers and provide a great service and a darn good hoagie. You have a choice NOT to go there.

On the other hand, government FORCES you to pay them upwards of 50% of all your income…you have no CHOICE, you must pay them. Government provides a cr@ppy service and can throw you in jail if you’re late on a “payment”.

Okay… am I missing something? Yes, I am. It should be a picture of Obama and not Hitler.

Interesting narrow assessment. The price of oil is under $83 a barrel which is at least 30% lower than the price when gas was $4 a gallon. Applying the same 30% the price per gallon should be $3 or less. But instead we have $ 3.50 to $3.75. How’s about you explain that away, while we have gas companies exporting gasoline. That’s right, while people here cry about drilling permits and domestic oil production we have oil companies exporting gasoline. What we need is a President who has the guts to stand up to big oil and make an old fashion (LBJ) like strong armed deal that gets us to the $2.50 per gallon at the pump. Oil companies are artificially keeping the price of gasoline high to effect the election. There is no other explanation. But I’m sure the group here will make up a few.

No matter what the price of oil is per barrel, none of the state or federal gas taxes have gone down, none of the state and federal regulations which drive the price up at the pump have been repealed, or has the cost of refining the oil into gas (except for the raw oil price) has gone down. The price of crude has gone down 20%, and that is what the price of gas in my neck of the woods has dropped. What argument are you really trying to make JROOK? Your use of the term “big oil” says it all.

      @JRook
      Taxes ma’ boy. Taxes.
First there’s the federal gas tax. It’s a standard 18.4 cents nationwide. Then states tack on an additional excise tax. That varies from just a few cents to over 20 cents. On top of that, some states add an additional sales tax. Then in a few unlucky locales, county and city governments levy their own sales tax as well.

Wawa’s gas prices are cheaper than any other main stream gas stop you could go to in the tri-state area. What a bunch of idiots. I go out of my way to get my gas at a Wawa BECAUSE its significantly cheaper than Sunoco, 711, Lukoil, BP, and the rest of them. Shame on these “hackers”. Wawa does so much good for the community. They are a wonderful company and they deserve our respect and thanks for providing quality services and CHEAPER gas prices! Unbelievable.

When you really think about it, Hitler obviously favored big government and certainly expanded his and took over so many businesses. Apparently, this group does welcome Hitler to come and tax the crap out of WAWA’s customers. What is it, the local gas stations make about a penny per gallon, the oil companies get about 6 to 7 cents, while the middle men do make more, then it is the government that gets the lion’s share of what a gallon goes for.
