‘Hallelujah!’: This Is How the Christian Left Is Responding to the ObamaCare Ruling

The Christian left is elated today over the Obama administration’s Supreme Court health care victory. Many of the leftist faith groups that The Blaze has covered in the past have come out in support of the decision. While Jim Wallis’ Sojourners, the National Council of Churches (NCC) and other progressive Christian leaders, churches and movements took different tones in how they addressed the issue, the overarching theme was clear: Progressive believers are exhilarated, as they have been taking to blogs and social media throughout the day to make their voices heard.

From slight undertones to unconfined outbursts of excitement, the reactions have truly been divergent in their intensity. Take, for instance, Sojourners’ official statement.

“While people will undoubtedly remain divided about the Affordable Care Act and today’s ruling, it does mean that millions of people will now have access to health insurance coverage and the overall growth of spending on health care will be curtailed,” Sojourners’ Beau Underwood wrote on the outlet’s web site.

But Lisa Harper, the director for mobilizing at Sojourners, could hardly contain herself, spouting a more amped-up response to the news. In a series of tweets, she praised the “historic” accomplishment and expressed her support for the Supreme Court’s stance on the issue:

Christian Liberals Respond to the Supreme Courts Health Care Ruling

The NCC, too, took a much more overt approach to addressing the announcement. In a press release the group published on its web site immediately following the Supreme Court’s decision, the leftist Christian group reported that it “welcomed” the pro-Obama ruling.

In the release, NCC President Kathryn M. Lohre showered accolades on the now vindicated health care plan and connected its viability to Christian doctrine:

“The member communions of the National Council of Churches have supported readily available health care since we were formed in 1950 during the Truman Administration. We as churches follow the bold example of Jesus, who healed the sick, sometimes breaking the religious law that governed society.

Our members have always believed that health care is not simply another worthy cause to which we lend our name. Christians believe that human beings—all of them—are infinitely-valued children of God, created in God’s image. Adequate health care, therefore, is a matter of preserving what our gracious God has made.

That is why churches (and other religious communities) have established so many hospitals and other places of healing. And why we are convinced that health care is not a privilege, reserved for those who can afford it, but a right that should be available, at high quality, to all.”

Then, there’s TheChristianLeft.org, a massive network of Christian progressives. This morning, the group took to its Facebook page (which has nearly 83,000 fans) and posted some similar messages. Aside from linking out to the DailyKos in one post (a sign of just how far-left the group sways), TheChristianLeft.org reiterated its thirst for a “universal single-payer” system.

“One of the many reasons we started this page was our sheer dismay at the silence of ‘Christian Leaders’ during the health care debate,” the administrators write. “Never again will that happen under our watch. Jesus stood with the poor and the sick. So do we.”

Under another post that reads, “Jesus was clear,” the following image was posted:

The Catholic Democrats predictably sang Obama’s praises as well. On the group’s Twitter account, they called the ruling “a victory for the poor and working class.” Here are some of their social media messages:

These are just some of the samplings that are coming from the religious left. There will certainly be more from these religious figures and commentators in the coming days (The Huffington Post has a longer list of comments from these leaders here).

Image Credit: Pew Research Center/Christianity Today

Despite these positive accolades, Christianity Today’s analysis of some recent Pew Research Center numbers showcases the overwhelming angst that is likely to come from the overarching evangelical community as a result of the decision (the majority of evangelicals skew right-of-center):

Evangelicals, more than any other religious group, wanted the entire health care law scrapped, according to a June poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. In poll results given toChristianity Today, three-quarters of evangelicals disapprove of the law, a number higher than any other religious tradition. Catholics and those unaffiliated with religion were evenly split. African-American Protestants were the most supportive religious group, with 81 percent approving of the law.

Pew also asked respondents if they would be “happy” or “unhappy” with three possible Supreme Court scenarios. Overall, the court’s ruling was unlikely to please many, regardless of the decision. About 50 percent of all Americans said they would be unhappy with a decision to uphold the law. But 48 percent said they would unhappy if the act were thrown out.

Among evangelicals, just one in five wanted the entire law upheld, and 62 percent of evangelicals said they would be happy if the court threw out the entire law. They would have been split over a ruling that took out only the individual mandate, leaving other parts of the law intact.

So, while the religious left celebrates, it seems the majority of Christians will likely be dissatisfied with the Supreme Court’s decision.

WOW….i think a lot of christians have lost the vision and understanding of what “Gods Kindom” really is all about. They have taken Matthew 10:8 and Luke 10:8-9 out of context. We all need to find out what Jesus was all about when he talked about Gods Kingdom.

Spend some time with John Wimber on YouTube. We all need to do some serious soul surching.

There is no such thing as a “leftist Christian”–that would be impossible. The “LEFT (left behind) are PRO-CHOICE about everything–any & all manner of sin. Jesus was–IS–PRO-CHOICE about only one thing & one thing only. He loves all people enough to allow THEM the “choice” to receive Him or to reject Him. People choose to go to Hell. Anyone can call themselves a “Christian”, then live their lives dodging the choice Jesus freely gave us–but NO ONE can dodge the consequences of dodging the choice Jesus freely gave us.

When you give your vote to a pol who supports abortion and you vote for them because you believe they will insure you will get your welfare, that you will answer for. These monsters are killing children, did not The Christ love children above all people? Repent all who call themselves Christians, your leaders are taking you to hell with them. The Christ said in the last days many will be deceived and will fall away from the truth and be condemned!! Repent for the days grow shorter. Heal The Sick!? I am a minister and read the actual language it was written in. The verses mentioned are about God’s Supernatural Healing…not medicine or treatments, just ask God to heal them and He does it. “Lay Hands On the Sick” means God Heals them through either the the Faith in God of the person that has hands laid on them or sometimes God just heals to show his love.

Using the Bible to support a Government Program is twisted at best unless you are speaking of the Kingdom of God and His Government…Period!

Also, Taking the Lords Name in Vain has nothing to do with Cursing… It actually means, Saying you are a Christian but actually not living like God instructs us to.

Example: I married my wife over 22 years ago and she took my last name, (let’s say Smith). If she changed her name to Smith and used Smith as her last name to gain the benefits I could give her, through my name, but lived down the street with another man named Jones, she would have Taken My Name In Vain!!!

When people says Christian Left, they really mean someone who claims his name but probably doesn’t live under His roof!!! I’m not talking about Heaven or Hell, just abusing His Name!

So we have health care which will cost a fortune, but we will not have a dr. So I guess we will import from India, etc., and the medical school curriculum will have to be speeded up so that we can get the affirmative action students throough faster.

Sure there are those that have a disability or other problem and do need some help and that is why there are charitable churches, hospitals and organizations out there. The government is having the audacity to fine (a/k/a tax) those that won’t buy insurance. That still leaves them without insurance. Jesus might have “ stood with the poor and the sick” BUT He cured them, Himself, at no expense to the nation AND He delivered a message of love , forgiveness and a spiritual after- life . Jesus did NOT demand “ redistribution ” of wealth, hate rhetoric , food stamps, and health care. Jesus was about the SPIRITUAL part of man’s life. These so-called Christian progressives are all about man’s MATERIAL existence. These people have hi-jacked Jesus’s message and turned it into something Jesus would never have said. I have a bill from the hospital for $3,400 from last February that I have not paid and the insurance won’t pay. Now my doctor is telling me that he may quit the practice. Surely my insurace will cost more next year again, but I won’t be able to pay it. So now I will probably have to drop my insurance and pay the increased penalty, now deemed a tax, so that the other 49% who pay no taxes can continue to ride life for free. Lastly, I have been told that because I pay so much for insurance, that it may be deemed a Cadilac insurance plan, and I will be taxed more. I am not elligible for medical or medicaid or mdicare, so thank you Obama and the Christian left.

We‘re in charge now and this is going to happen and there’s nothing you can do about it so shut up.

As a result of the Supreme Court decision today on Obamacare is has become clear that we need a solution that can be implemented in spite of Washington insider games and it starts with the Docs.
I have a solution that I’ve detailed called “The DocNet” (Google it), having been an insurance agent for the last 20 years and have come to realize that insurance itself will not solve the cost crisis of care. We need a new vision on healthcare and how it’s delivered and it depends on doctors, PCP’s in particularly.
We can’t wait until Obamacare is fully implemented to act, we the people must act without Romney or Washington and we can, because we are Americans not in spite of it!
My name is Keven Card and I approved this message!

The left wants everyone else to take care of their brother as long as the rich are paying for it. The worst type of hypocrites!

It’s great that they all support funding abortion and end of life suicide solutions…because those are both strong Christian values. What a bunch of dopes!

The black churches preach that it’s biblical to support the government, to stand behind them, and let them take care of you. It’s like they took every perverted translation required by King James to make taxes seem ok, and amplified them 100 fold above anything even King James had the balls to do.

“christian left” is an oxymoron. All tenets of the left are against God.

MAC: There is nothing Christian about ” redistribution.” That is just political- speak for stealing. Individual choice is Christian; Big Brother choice is not. Jesus was concerned with man’s spiritual life; these so-called Christian progressives are all about man’s material life. Fine if they so choose , like Karl Marx did., to focus on man’s material existence. But they have NO right to hijack this as the work of Jesus. That is called lying which , like stealing, was never part of Jesus’s message !

MAC: and enough of that Lefty anti-Catholic Church rhetoric. . Get enough of that in the Democrat’s mouthpiece, the New York Times. Getting almost as old as the Blame Bush and the Race Card baloney.
