Hamas Fires Dozens of Rockets at Israel, Heaviest Barrage in Years

JERUSALEM (AP) — Palestinian militants in Gaza fired more than 50 rockets into Israel on Saturday, the heaviest barrage in two years, Israeli officials said, while Hamas police beat up reporters and confiscated their equipment.

A Hamas official was killed and four civilians were wounded when Israel hit back with tank fire and air strikes, said Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Adham Abu Salmia.

The violence comes amid increasing calls for reconciliation between Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his bitter rivals, the Islamic militant group Hamas. Abbas is seeking U.N. recognition for a Palestinian state by the fall and is currently lobbying for votes worldwide. Hamas used force to disperse a reconciliation rally in Gaza. Some reporters were later beaten up, threatened and briefly detained.

Hamas Fires Dozens of Rockets at Israel, Heaviest Barrage in Years

Israeli police spokesman Tamir Avtabi said Gaza militants fired 54 mortar shells at Israeli border communities within 15 minutes. He said two Israeli civilians were lightly wounded by shrapnel and residents were advised to stay at home or in bomb shelters.

Hayim Yellin, head of the Eshkol region where the mortars exploded, said they were the same type as those intercepted on a cargo ship last week loaded with weapons Israel said were sent by Iran to Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said he will file a complaint at the U.N. after Saturday’s unusually large barrage of rockets. In a statement, Lieberman said the Palestinians “primary goal is destroying Israel.”

Hamas acknowledged it launched some of the mortars – an unusual move as the Islamic militant group does not usually take responsibility for such attacks. Hamas fears triggering another Israeli invasion similar to a three-week operation aimed at stopping daily Palestinian shelling two years ago that killed about 1,400 Palestinians.

Israeli police said the mortar barrage Saturday was the heaviest since that round of fighting.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for all violence originating in Gaza, though Hamas usually blames smaller groups for rocket fire.

Hamas spokesman Ismail Radwan said the shelling was in reaction to recent Israeli airstrikes that killed militants. He warned Israel “not to test Hamas’ response.”

Hamas ousted Fatah from Gaza in bloody street battles in 2007. Since then, Hamas controls Gaza and the Western backed secular Fatah rules the West Bank.

Repeated efforts to reconcile the two rival governments have failed. Palestinians have held rallies in Gaza and the West Bank in recent days calling for the two sides to resolve their differences.

On Saturday, Hamas used force to break up a small rally, witnesses said and later beat up reporters from major international news outlets.

An Associated Press Television News cameraman was nearby when he was cornered by Hamas police and beaten with sticks. He was briefly detained and released unharmed. Other cameramen also were beaten and some had their equipment confiscated by Hamas.

Hamas also raided the offices of the Reuters news agency, CNN and Japanese channel NHK in Gaza. A Reuters producer was arrested by Hamas and witnesses later saw him leave hospital with a bandage wrapped around his hand.

Reuters Bureau Chief Crispian Balmer said “A group of armed men entered our office in Gaza and threatened our employees and confiscated a video camera after we were spotted filming a demonstration from the building. They smashed a TV in the office, they clubbed one of our guys on the arm with a metal club and they threatened to throw another one of our employees out of the window.”

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri spoke out against the raids in a message sent to reporters. “We condemn the attack on Reuters agency in Gaza and we call on the Hamas interior ministry to investigate this incident, we emphasize our respect for the media,” he said.

The internal Palestinian rift makes their vision of statehood harder to achieve and hinders their ability to reach a peace agreement with Israel.

Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians collapsed last year over disputes about Israeli construction in the West bank, areas Palestinians want as parts of their future state.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to deliver a major policy speech soon on peacemaking.

Israel’s channel 2 TV broadcast a rare interview Saturday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas recorded last week. Abbas told the Israeli station that he was “more determined than ever to reach a solution with Israel.” Abbas said Gaza and the West Bank had to reconcile. “Hamas have committed terrible crimes but they are still part of the Palestinian people,” he said.

History shows us the Palestinians don’t want peace with Israel, nor do they desire a Palestinian state beside Israel. They had theiir chance in 1948 for a Palestinian state and refused. They had their chance at peace when President Clinton brokered a deal that would have given them 95% of all their demands but under Arafat they refused, declared an intifada and continued their decades long war against Israel. There will only be peace when one side finally, and decisively wipes out the other.

Some one wrote on the Blaze the other day I don’t remember who so as to give them credit but I loved it, They said he took the job to have a 4yr all expense paid vaciton. That is certainly what it seems like. VOTUS I think that is what we should all start calling him. Good job.

Good thing I’m not President because I would, without hesitation, lob one of those big ones into a desert over there making a nice glass bowl and get their attention. When I‘ve got their attention I’ll tell them playtime is over! Pack up your stuff, go home, never come out or the next ones will make it to their rightful place! PEACE IN THE MID-EAST:
The interesting thing about the Israel-Palestinian Peace Talks is that if the Arab (Muslims) quit attacking Israel the conflict would end. What does Israel have to gain by negotiating with people whose only objective is to destroy Israel? The only agreement that the Muslims will agree to are those that weaken Israel and aid themselves in obtaining their only objective.

Benjamin Netanyahu, “If the Muslims lay down their arms, there will be peace. If Israel lays down her arms, she will be destroyed.”…………That’s it in a nut shell!

It’s the will of Allah to kill all Jews and Christians as they are infidels. Had the Hebrews done as they were instructed when conquering the lands of Caanan then the Palestinians would be no more. However, they enslaved them and made the their mortal enemies. As such the Jews hold the blame of their forefathers for this FUBAR. Which brings us to now, Arabs will always hate the Jews so they manufactured an anti-religion to counter the religion of the Jews. Islam does not mean “peace” it means “submission” and all these noble terrorist are doing is submitting to the teachings of Mohammad who did his best work while demon possessed and in a fit of seizure. The Qur’an does not claim to be inspired “God breathed” by God, rather the plagarized ramblings of a whimsical god who mimics the commands of the Jewish God and denies the “Spirit of God” in leading men to salvation. Isam and Christianity cannot “Coexist” as the silly bumper sticker would imply. Allah and Mohammad, peas be upon them!

The product of a culture deeply rooted in the deionization of Israel and Jews. Palestinian leadership has allowed, and even encouraged, that culture of death to grow and flourish. If Mahmoud Abbas and others truly find these attacks “immoral” and “inhuman,” they can begin to attack that culture at its root. Until they do, all their denunciations of terrorist violence will be little more than empty words.

Current opinion has it that to be a pure and real Palestinian, you cannot be involved in negotiations and therefore they deny any evidence, even of speaking with the Israelis. As a matter of fact, the Palestinians have no intention of negotiating for “two States for two people”: to them, Palestine is a single entity that includes Israel.
The proof is just the regular and continuous incitement to hatred. To cite just a couple of examples, the football tournament of the Palestinian National Authority is named after Wafa Idris, the first “glorious” female suicide terrorist, along with many squares and streets named after other assassins. State television invites people to “liberate all the lands stolen from the Palestinians”; “moderate” parliamentarian Barghouti explains that democratic “Israel is the most abhorrent enemy the world has ever known”, whilst for the Minister of Culture, Jerusalem has never been the homeland of the Jews.
It is a drop in a sea of hatred which safeguards the leadership and gives the assassins their mandate.

Israel, here’s your only viable solution:

Isolate the West Bank and Gaza, jam all communications in or out, then Initiate about a week of total-saturation-level artillery, tank, and airstrikes in Gaza AND the West Bank until there aren’t even two stones left stacked on each other anywhere within Gaza or the West Bank. Torch what’s left with napalm & flamethrowers, and then bulldoze the remains into the sea. Use the rubble that used to be Gaza and the West Bank to build Israel a nice new sea port.

Warn the other Arabic countries that might retaliate against Israel for destroying Gaza and the West Bank that if they launch an attack, Israel will nuke Mecca and the Capital cities of any Arabic nations that dare to attack.

      No more Palestinian problem.

This sounds harsh? Too bad. The Palestinians and radical Islamists themselves have *chosen* a path that leaves Israel no other choice. Innocent Muslims? After decades of allowing the radical Islamists to bomb and murder as they please, there are *NO* innocent Muslims.

Israel generally speaking is a compassionate country, as seen in the humanitarian efforts they do around the world, (like being the real first responders in Haiti), as well as in their own neigborhood. Even giving aid to Palestinian civilians, people who hate them. With that in mind, they reserve the right of exsistance and self defense. Make no mistake, they are prepared to do just that and thats why they have not been overtaken yet. That and of coarse God’s protective hand being on them. But it is not in their best interest or anybodies to be the aggressers even when they are so badly wronged on a consistent basis. They have shown great restraint. More than probably anyone in history. Netanyahu on CNN the other night said he pleaded with his people NOT to seek revenge for the Jewish family that was slaughtered in their home by militants recently. That is to their great credit. But if and when the time comes, they will pull out all the stops, including nukes. At present, they have the same kind of situation Reagan had with Russia. If you try to wipe us out, we will turn your country into glass…….It’s a great deterent!……Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!!

They will only get you killed. May your response to any aggression be swift and definitive. My recommendation is to turn Palestine 2000 degrees. Best way to destroy a bed of vipers.

Nice image update. Actually, the fact that we are now supporting rather than leading the Libian revolt, will allow Israel to fight more Hamas overtly, without the previous decade’s “zionist neocon US conspiracy” blow back. on the Arab street.

Agreed SnowLeopard. Also notice there was not a peep from anyone remotely connected to the regime after the most recent slaughter of an Israeli family. Unfortunately, judging from recent past behavior, I do not see the US voting against any sort of UN resolution establishing the Palestinian state. I believe that most have read the same history texts as Helen Thomas where they conveniently ignore the Israeli presence in that part of the world since time immemoriam. I also fear that the two Iranian warships that recently traversed the Suez Canal were on a massive rapid re-armament mission for Hamas so that Hamas could really go on the offensive while the world is focusing everywhere but the territories and Israel.

Israel is already hated by the world, so they should stop pulling their punches and respond to this barrage with a devastating and horrific slaughter. That would quiet hamas down for a while.

I suppose they didn’t feel that killing an infant last week was good enough so they lobbed a few mortars to take down some more drooling babies. They simply can’t prove their cause is just until they kill enough toddlers. I say it’s time to take gaza and push them into Egypt where the animals are loved. You can’t have a country that hates you in the middle of your country. Those people made their choice and it’s time they paid the price for being the vermin they are. I officially turn my back and Israel can do what needs to be done. Do it, Do it fast and end this.

My money is on Israel busting some HAMAS A$$ and then some Nukes a flying everywhere from everyone very soon (tho I hope not). Also, Dont I remeber something about some Iranian warboats pulling in to the area recently? maybe for use in Libya(against UN forces) or maybe……against Israel! The dam is about to burst folks!

Israel needs to strike back harder. The world is busy with Libya now. But a part of me wonders if part of the reason they actually voted to impose a no fly zone and interfere with Libya is because they want to also set a precedent they can use at some future time against Israel.

I’m getting too cynical, even for myself.

One day people against Israel will see that God does exist when they provoke his people. It is prophecy in Isaiah. Keep on fueling the fire. You would think that the Palestinians would think to themselves, Hmm every time I kill a Jew they kill us, lots of us. They keep condemning themselves over and over and one day they will be few. Sucks for the good Palestinians.

Exactly. They’ll demand a “proportionate response”:

      ********************************
Since the LSM claims that Hamas‘ rockets rarely hit what they’re aimed at, maybe Israel should drop nukes but make sure they miss what they aim at. Is that “proportionate”?
