Lap-Dancing Strippers: Philly Prof. Allegedly Taught Ethics Class Using Exotic Dancers

Is this what they mean by a hands-on education?

A professor at a branch of La Salle University — a Catholic Christian school — in Pennsylvania is under investigation after it was reported he invited strippers on campus and into a class — strippers who then gave some students, and even the professor, lap dances.

The “class” was an extra credit symposium on business ethics that cost students an extra $150 a piece. School officials have acknowledged the accusations and launched an investigation.

The Philadelphia City Paper gives the details of what happened in the class hosted by Prof. Jack Rappaport:

According to the students, the symposium, hosted at a satellite campus facility in Plymouth Meeting, was held by La Salle assistant professor of management Jack Rappaport. For a $150 admission fee, students earned credit in the College of Professional and Continuing Studies, as well as extra credit in the professor’s School of Business classes. The symposium’s subject, the students say, was the application of Platonic and Hegelian ethics to business.

As part of the lesson, they say, three dancers, dressed in bikinis and/or miniskirts and high heels, had already arrived when the approximately 30 students (two of whom were female) entered the classroom. During the course of the presentation, lap dances were administered to willing students — and even Rappaport — while he lectured.

The strippers were “doing their normal job,” as one student put it.

One student described the scene to local station WPVI-TV. “I don’t know, just kind of laying on top of him. Not laying on top of him but straddling him. It was like a lap dance you could say,” said sophomore Brad Bernardino.

WPVI covered the incident, which occurred last month but is just now coming to light:

The class was apparently shut down when the business dean happened to walk by and see what was going on. City Paper details some of Rappaport’s credentials:

According to a curriculum vitae posted on La Salle’s website, Rappaport has a Master’s Degree from New York University and has taught at La Salle for 22 years. Students describe his teaching style as unconventional — several students noted trips to a race track in past classes as part of a lesson in real-life statistics.

Students told the Paper that Rappaport’s classes are currently being taught by substitutes, suggesting he may have been put on leave.

In the end, it’s unclear what strippers and lap dances had to do with business ethics. Rappaport declined to comment to WPVI, saying he could not do so until the investigation concluded.

“I don’t think bringing in strippers is like right for a Catholic Christian school,” freshman Rachel Sweeney told WPVI.

That may be an understatement.

I wonder what the true cost to the school will be in reduced future alumni and other donations? This business professor gives credence to “those who can’t do, teach”.

This professor has a very low self-opinion of himself. You don’t need gimmicks to provide quality education.

    Say the class lasts 90 minutes. $150 x 30 = $4500.00 divided by 3 strippers = $1,500.00 minus their pimp-professors take. Now that’s what I call a business class.

The interpretation of “brotherly love” knows no bounds and is clearly for sale.
Doesn’t a story like this put the past few years of our economic woes and financial whoring into perspective? “Oh, I get. They’re taught to be greedy, amoral and lascivious. It all makes sense now.”
    Thanks, Philadelphia! Thanks, higher education!

Wow, that’s nothing like my ethics class in college….. key words- catholic college, strippers, and ethics. I don’t think I have ever heard these words used in the same sentence….LOL
The saddest part of this story is the destruction of the moral fabric of our great society. You send your kid to college to learn business ethics. Your professor takes you to the race track for gambling and host a class with strippers. Also, who made the 150.00 cover charge…professor or strippers?…. only thing missing was a keg and drugs.

Next semester will be an illicit drug use symposium. $3,000.00 to attend. The T.E.K. will be for the business class… break down the percentage of monies that go into the professors pocket and the free drugs he snorted/smoked/injected. The ethics class will be, you are no longer required to have any!

Hmm. How much of a cut of that $150.00 did he pocket?
    A Cahtolic Christian University?
Trips to race tracks as part of classes?
Mebbe some of the students wanted to be jockeys.
And I heard there is a great demand in the job market for observers of lap dancings.
Foreign students around the globe are into science and engineering.
And we wonder why we are going down the tubes.
Many American companies hires foreigners in industries where advanced sciences are required.
    I wonder why?

Probably the same thing the male students did? Lots of women go to strip clubs.

While it would have been an interesting lecture to hear about the economics of a legal-but-dubious sector of our economy, I think having them actually give lap dances (and at a Catholic University no less) crossed several ethical boundaries.

When I was in college, we brought in a homeless professor to talk about his experiences on the streets, including how he made money and whatnot. It was fascinating, easily one of the best lectures I’ve ever attended in my life. But we didn’t go rooting through trash together.

    Wow! Dumb ass!

I can’t begin to imagine what he was trying to teach in a business ethics class by having strippers give lap dances. Too bad it was cut short by the dean. I would have loved to hear the argument. I suppose there are a number of ethical considerations in the business transaction of people going to strip clubs … like are they lying to their spouses about where they are? … is it a form of cheating? … is anyone getting hurt? … hmmmmmm

… but still … at a Christian College? …. dumb ass!

If you’ve never been to a strip club Rick, the ladies there will always say they are “working their way through college and need the money to pay tuition” a very common response to “what are you doing dancing here?” If you dont believe me try it one time just for giggles!

Those girls can make six figures if they‘re in the right club and city and they’re really attractive. My friends used to go all the time and they were pretty much on a first name basis with the girls. I’d say they put the girls AND their kids through college as much as they went.
