‘Hang on, Hang on!’: CNN Anchor Clashes With Sen. Rand Paul Over Debt Ceiling

Maggie at WeaselZippers sums it all up in a headline:
After proposing a balanced budget amendment to the Reid bill and having it struck down, Sen. Rand Paul sat down with Don Lemon to explain what was happening on the floor and what compromises he was up for making. Lemon was in a curt mood, it seems, as weeks have gone by and the debt deadline looms with little to no visible progress occurring. The two had a contentious exchange as Sen. Paul tried to explain he did have the will to compromise when Lemon questioned what it would take.
“Let’s just do the interview without talking points– let’s just talk to each other,” Lemon began, though followed up with a barbed question: “Democrats and Republicans are both pointing fingers at you. What will make you and the Tea Party happy?” Sen. Paul immediately made a correction to his introduction: “In your lead, you said I rejected both plans. I actually accepted both plans… with an amendment.” Sen. Paul had proposed a balanced budget amendment which gained no traction in exchange for his vote. “I think that’s a very reasonable position,” he offered.
Lemon then wondered whether Paul’s insistence on measures like a balanced budget amendment were isolating him.
“The Democrats have made many concessions when it comes to what’s going on here, and even the Tea Party position it appears to most people remains rigid,” Lemon said. “The question is, have you made your point? And by continuing to go on with this, do you feel like you‘re overreaching and that you’re going to lose the clout?”
Paul started talking about how he didn‘t want to add any more debt to the country’s finances. Lemon cut him off. “Hang on, hang on,” he said. “Can we just stick to that–we’re going to get to that–”
“Let me finish my thought,” Paul said.
“Hold on, please, be respectful here,” Lemon responded. “I’m trying to answer your question, you’ve interrupted my answer,” Paul said.
“If you answer the question, I’ll give you plenty of time,” Lemon said.
The two clashed again when Lemon asked who Paul thinks will be to blame if the U.S. defaults on its debt obligations. Again, Paul didn’t answer the question directly, and, again, Lemon pressed him on it. There was yet another contentious back-and-forth when Lemon asked Paul about whether he understood that the public is frustrated with Washington, and Paul started talking about measures he had introduced in the Senate.
Later Lemon tried to defend his approach to the Paul interview:

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 2:51pmI don’t see anything “ridged” or extreme about balancing the budget. When you look at the graph of the debt for the last 50 years, it looks like a mountain side, and we are in the plane that’s about to fly into the side of it. With about 3.5T in tax revenue, and 14.5T in debt, it would be the same as any one of us running our credit card to a level that is the same as all the yearly gross incomes of you and your extended family put together! How is that rational?

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 3:31pmWhy is it that compromise is only considered compromise when the Republican/Conservatives are giving in. Sen. Paul’s statement at the end when he said he would vote for the Reid bill if they would agree to come up with a balanced budget over the next 7-8 years should have been followed up with the question, “Do you see how compromise works, Mr. Lemon? Now the President and the Media celebrated the creation of an Independent Southern Sudan a few weeks back so if it’s good for Sudan then how much better for America? I have nothing in common in with Liberal Marxists. I simply hate their ideology and I personally won’t tolerate much more of it but before we come to Violence why not we all agree to go our separate ways peacefully?
The Debt Party is not ending now it’s only just the beginning. The only way America has suvived the past 50 years in its current form is through Bribery. Liberal/Marxists are buying votes with debt and consolidating their power. Without Debt their Hegemony comes to an end and they know it. So dont’ expect the Liberal/Marxist to just roll over and do what’s best for the Nation. They won’t. They need the Debt in order to stay in Power. The Game is up. Prepare for the Ending.

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 4:07pmBe careful when exhaulting FOX News. While they do come to most issues from a more Right point of view they are not True Conservatives. FOX News is simply a Neo-Con Network and while more to the right then the rest there’s still a lot to be desired.
For example how many on the Blaze believe that the Wars in Afhg and Iraq have been worthwhile? Knowing what you know now would you spend 1-3 Trillion all over again in order to occupy those Nations in the name of a “War on Terror?” I would hope that you would say absolutely not but it’s really not about the Money or the Terror. Regardless FOX News is all for these Wars and they have promoted them from the very beginning until present.
Furthermore, FOX News is for making 10s of millions of Mexicans US Citizens with voting privileges which will forever change the composition of this country if it hasn’t already.
Finally while I’m not for a Progressive Income Tax, there would be nothing wrong with a one time (1 year) across the board tax on the way to a fair Flat Tax even though this is not a principled position. Yet FOX only desires to protect the Wealthy. Rupert protects his people. So while they are to the right of all other Cable News they are not Conservative. Beware!

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 4:08pmThe media says Republicans won’t compromise? Democrats aren’t compromising. They’re idea of cutting spending is promising not increase spending as much in the future? That’s not a cut at all. Besides, Reagan trusted them and Democrats broke their promise and increased their spending. We’ve already seen how well that worked out. The economy won‘t improve if they keep increasing spending and pay for it by devaluing everyone’s hard-earned dollars and risking America’s credit rating. Democrats rely on greed and sloth for their voting blocs. Libertarians express virtue. They risk their own careers by not catering to the corrupt.
Report Post »There’s no reason to increase taxes. End the tax loopholes for environmentalists and other pet businesses. The tax burden isn’t fair at all if the government gets to play favorites. End Obamacare, they’ve waived their friends. We’re supposed to be equal under the law. Why on earth do we have a National Endowment for the Arts? We have to pay people to put the Virgin Mary in a bikini? This so called “art” that most everyone will never see, but must pay for anyways. They can attack Christianity with their own money. Give education back to the states. Federal control hasn’t improved education one iota. It’s become much worse. The waste is endless. Obama‘s only proposal was massive spending increases that were so absurd not even one Democrat voted for it and he has the gall to say Republicans won’t budge.

You will make it just fine. Keep your faith. No need to separate IMO, just stand in truth as is being done by some of us who see it.
We both know one of two options will occur, the country will leave it‘s current way and regress to it’s roots, or the country will continue and eventually implode. The second I see happening sooner then later.
As for your taxes thought, consider this, direct taxes are to be apportioned, divided equally among each citizen. Indirect taxes are to be uniform, the same for everyone. Abraham Lincoln passed the first income tax in 1861 and it continued until it’s repeal ten years later to be replaced by a flat (progressive) income tax. This flat tax was ruled unConstitutional. This led to the 16th amendments language that Congress can tax without regard to apportion or uniform. Gave power to discriminate.
The Constitution was clear on taxes being equal, no matter the class. Federalists paper 21 show Hamilton was for a consumption tax VS income tax. A flat sales tax of 1% would run this country fine. Each entitlement should be a tax itself by name. America soon would learn to wipe it’s own but.

Instead we get a bill from the House with MORE spending.

P.S. If we did not increase the debt limit, we would not default but we would be FORCED to cut spending. If we cut 4 trillion in spending we would not be downgraded. We should of kept the debt limit, and cut 4 trillion in spending. How hard is that to understand……See ya at the bottom of the cliff!

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 1:52pmThe debate has three parties (four if you include the American People, but no one does): President/Democrats, Republicans, and the Tea Party.
The President called for compromises then in the same breath declared he what he absolutely would not approve.
The Senate Majority Leader called for compromises and then declared every subsequent bill that came to him from the House “Dead on Arrival”.
The Republicans agreed to new revenues, but the President/Democrats upped the number (apparently the crisis was polling in the Dems favor – the President/Democrats have since backed away from new revenue as a requirement).
The Tea Party folks have been against raising the debt limit (like they said they would when they ran for office in Nov. 2010), and somehow it’s a big surprise to Democrats.
All it would have taken would be for a little less than half of the Democratic Majority to side with the non-Tea Party Republicans and this matter could have been resolved. The fantasy that less than 100 Congressmen could completely “run the table” is absurd, unless the minority values “making a point” over “resolving a crisis”.
Republicans in the House held their bill to secure passage, Democrats in the Senate held their bill 30 hrs to, I kid you not, demonstrate to the American People how stubborn the Republicans were being – despite the Senate Minority leader asking for a vote on the so-called “Reid Plan.” immediately after the House bill was tabled.

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 1:42pmThank you Rand Paul for being a true leader and standing in Truth without waver. We need many more like you.
I think all TEA party supporters should send old Don a message on whom we blame for what’s going on in Washington, if we TEA supporters are rigid and if continued spending as Don supports is the correct path for America.
Stand in Truth. TEA!
