NEW YORK (AP) — A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that a son of Bernard Madoff has been found dead in New York City of an apparent suicide.
The official says Mark Madoff was found hanged in his Manhattan apartment.
A family member notified police around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
The official spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t allowed to speak publicly about the case.
Mark Madoff and his brother, Andrew, were under investigation but hadn‘t faced any criminal charges in the massive Ponzi scheme that led to their father’s jailing.
Bernard Madoff swindled a long list of investors out of billions of dollars and is serving a 150-year prison term.

Posted on December 11, 2010 at 11:22amIt is curious that Mark Madoff was found hanged on the morning after a TV special on his father, Bernie Madoff, broadcast the evening before.
How sad!

Posted on December 11, 2010 at 10:44amSorry, I have to disagree. Turning your life over to Christ does not always stop you from taking your own life. I am a Christian and God stayed my hand once, seconds from eternity. Nobody can know what you are going through that makes you want to end your life here on earth. I‘m sorry he had nobody to talk to and I’m sorry if he could not hear God’s voice telling him not to do it (if he did it and not someone else). I’m sorry for the family because they will never understand either and now have to deal with the guilt of not being there for him when he needed them most. May God Bless.

Posted on December 11, 2010 at 12:39pmNo, your statement is incorrect. One should not hold the entire family criminally responsible for one’s wrong-doing unless they were completely involved. Bernie Madoff made it very clear that his kids didn’t know about it for many years until a year before he was arrested.
I feel bad for Mark’s wife, child and his brother. I guess compassion isn’t part of your vocabulary.

Posted on December 11, 2010 at 10:06amI wouldn’t call it Karma. If the he did know what was going on and was part of the criminal conspiracy, then he may have taken his own life out of fear of punishment.
However, if, as Madoff claims, no one else really knew about the Ponzi Scheme, I imagine incredible guilt about the harm his father had caused others and the destruction of his and his family’s pride and everything he had believed to be good and decent about his father led to his decision to take his own life. He realized he had lived a lie at great expense to others.
A Ponzi Scheme probably starts somewhat innocently with arrogance. People think they will be able to keep it going infinitely. In Madoff’s case, I imagine he originally did plan on finding a way to earn the money back; he does have the education required to deal in the markets legitimately. However, very quickly something like that can spin out of control – like with Enron. What was a small, insignificant, seemingly easy to repair lie ends up requiring more and more lies and deception to perpetually cover up. By the time someone like former Enron CEO Jeff Skilling could see and realize what he had done, there was no way to stop it and then guilt sets in. And, then you realize your family and friends will fall with you – your son hangs himself.

LOL! As if Madoff suddenly became an honest man after being caught rather than protecting his family and other cohorts. Mark Madoff took the easy way out and left his wife to deal with the eventual seizing of all of their wealth and assets. He was a weasel in the highest degree.
