The decision made by ESPN to pull the iconic Hank Williams Jr. intro to Monday Night Football following the entertainer’s controversial remarks created a heated debate in regards to Williams’s freedom of speech, and ESPN’s right as a business to protect their brand. As the dust has begun to settle, Williams‘s replacement for Monday’s Bears/Lions matchup will be (drum roll): Hall of Fame Running Back Barry Sanders. Sanders announced on Twitter Thursday that he would be participating in the broadcast:
Williams has asked America “are you ready for some football?” every Monday night during the NFL season since 1989. It appears that the format will go with a former player of the home team from week to week introducing the broadcast. ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz told the Detroit Free Press; “This is the format we’ll likely use the remainder of the season. We haven’t made any decisions beyond that.”
Yahoo Sports writes that Sanders will not be singing a country music song, but will “be featured in some other form of video segment that previews the game.”
Williams’s negative comments in regards to President Obama on Fox News last week, has led critics like Bomani Jones to say that Williams has “attached himself” to politics that many people find “offensive” and “extreme.”
“Many people” may not include the majority of NFL owners, players and executives.
A new study released Friday by the Center for Responsive Politics found that people affiliated with NFL teams gave 67 percent of their money to Republicans and just 29 percent to Democrats in the years that President Obama has been in office.

Why does ESPN have such a monopoly with the NFL why do we need the ESPN network to watch football?

Posted on October 8, 2011 at 7:09pmThe only think offensive about this situation is the fact that ESPN let him go for speaking his mind. Williams didn’t even call our Marxist-in-cheif Hitler, he merely drew an accurate analogy of a situation. (analogy is a comparison of sorts – just wanted to make sure our liberal readers would not have to look that word up… See how courteous we conservatives are)?

Posted on October 8, 2011 at 10:02pmI know, I keep waiting for the news, or weather…but they’re always stuck on sports. I don’t get it! ;-) Seriously though, I don’t watch much ESPN anymore since they took hockey off a few years ago. They claimed they got better ratings with bowling than NHL hockey. Really? Who pissed in your Post Toasties ESPN? Who cares is more like it. Dig up Cosell & Meredith and prop them up in a chair. They‘d be more entertaining than the tripe they’ve come up with since those guys left. I’m fine only watching NFL on Sunday. I watch hockey Mon-Fri on the NHL channel. Over-reacting to Hank’s First Amendment Right will only damage their brand further. Then again… Sadly, most dolts that watch ESPN couldn‘t care less about Hank’s rights. They probably don’t even know about what happened or care. They’re the same idiots that never read a book, a news article, or even watch the news on tv. It’s got to be entertainment 24-7 to amuse these lab rats. Hey, kiddies, put down the game controller, the iphone, the iPad, give NetFlix a rest and pay attention to what’s going on all around you. Ignoring the problems doesn’t make them go away. I don’t miss MNF and I could care less about FESPN …(as if I hadn’t already made it painfully clear)…I’m not bitter though. ;-)

Posted on October 8, 2011 at 10:20pmlillymckim, please post no more of your communists ideas on this website. Your statement that, “Somebody needs to break up the ESPN monopoly!” reeks of the liberal anti-trust laws and other liberal regulations that prohibit companies from monopolizing an industry, something they have every right to do according to God and the Constitution. Haven’t you read Ayn Rand? ESPN dominates, as they have every right to do. And they have every right to maneuver financially and quash any upstart competitor.
I’m just flat sick of you liberals complaining about the success of a sports outlet. Do you hate success? Do you hate America? ESPN dominates, has total control and you are not even a flea to swat. As far ESPN is concerned you don’t exist. And that is at it should be lillymckim. Read Ayn Rand you cretin, and learn your place in the world. You have no money and you are nothing.

As a fan, however, I intend to watch, but avoid all intro and pregame activities on ESPN, making sure to tune in LATE as a message. There are ratings there too, for every minute you watch. I would also suggest that event attendees wait until the first quarter starts to go in – for all MNF games. Nothing worse than an empty stadium at kickoff. Messages can be sent, without missing your favorite game or team, advertisers included.
