Hannity Grills ‘Rent is Too Damn High’ Guy

Jimmy McMillan was thrust into the national spotlight last week when he declared during a New York gubernatorial debate that he represents the “Rent is Too Damn High Party.” On Monday, he appeared on Sean Hannity’s show to lay out his platform and, at the prodding of Hannity, expand it: “Taxes are too damn high.”

By the way, he plans on lowering too-damn-high rent by tapping into stimulus funds and bailing out landlords. That admission to Hannity started a tough and comical exchange, which led to another McMillan admission: his rent is already subsidized.

Enjoy:

I think the man really means well, he just isn’t as informed or articulate as some of us are. He also doesn’t have the type of support that other candidates have to help their public image, which is usually well managed, but never really effectively hides the truth from prying American minds.

He is correct, taxes are too damn high, but it’s deeper than that. Inflation is too damn high, and it’s going to get higher. Inflation is a tax created by printing more money which devalues your money. It just like instead of taxing you, I just go ahead and pay you in devalued money, so I already taxed you before you touch it. Not hard to understand.

For example, When gold was actually worth $50 an ounce/coin, average wages nationwide were about $1.60 hr.

Fast forward to 2010, the face value of gold is still $50, however due to devaluation of the dollar, it costs ~$1350 an ounce/coin. That’s an increase by a factor of 27 due to inflation.

Comparatively, wages have only increased by a factor of 4.5, bringing it only to ~$7.25 hr.

For more information, read this document prepared for Congress in January, 2005 by Cornell University called “Inflation and the Real Minimum Wage: Fact Sheet”.

Apparently, you know less than he does…and he knows very little. An educated person would critique his argument with Econ 101. It goes like this: he has called for wage control, which limits price, but also supply and creates what economists call a dead-weight loss of unfilled demand even at higher rents. It is a classic example of inefficiency and unintended consequences.

Now, for your other nonsensical statements. You claim taxes are too damn high, but you offer no proof. The classic ways of establishing whether taxes are too high are: 1) look at employment hours to see if you’ve created disincentives to work; 2) look at international markets to see whether you are losing jobs over taxes. The US tax rates are not too high when we look at these factors. Employment hours were higher under higher tax rates and remain much, much higher than in most other OECD countries (with the exception of Japan and Korea and Italy). So this gives us no indication of overly high taxes. Second, compared to international averages reveals that overall tax burdens are not higher in the US as well. Now, Gingrich likes to play a little game on this latter comparison by saying China has a lower corporate rate, while Ireland has no capital gains tax, while Dubai has no income tax… Then he claims we need to match the lowest tax rate on each tax, but this is silly. It leaves you with a zero tax rate, which makes ideologues happy but is not a realistic solution. The fact is, China has a lower corporate tax rate, but a higher capital gains and income tax rate. So you need to compare all sources and then see where it nets out. On that basis, the US is in the middle of the pack, which is not a bad place to be considering that we pay for the world’s peace keeping, have some of the best public assets (universities, scientific research, legal protections, etc.) in the world. The tax debate is just silly the way conservatives portray it. You’d think that we were back under “commie” Nixon with 90% marginal rates. Fact is, our tax rate is the lowest in 100 years.

Inflation. That’s a good one. You choose to look at inflation merely on the basis of gold prices, which are not tied to any fundamentals, while ignoring the basket of goods that every trained economist in the world looks at. On the economists’ basis, inflation is very controlled as the most recent CPI and PPI numbers showed. Even if you adjust the exclusions like energy and commodities–which reflect China’s demand rather than ours–you still do not have anything close to the inflationary rates that we should be worried about. In fact, the Fed is still more worried about deflation than inflation. Finally, the bond market, which is smarter than any single individual operating in it, much less a lay person such as yourself, is clearly saying that it is not concerned with inflation, given the low rates on both short and long term debt. You can get record low 30 year mortgages, but you are claiming that we are seeing high inflation. Now that is really funny.

Nice try. Next time, you should deliver those lines with black gloves on. Perhaps they’ll put you on Letterman.

You apparently don’t know how to read or comprehend simple concepts.

I wasn‘t commenting on the feasibility of this candidate’s solutions, I simply pointed out the fact that his comment that taxes are too high is correct.

The dollar is devalued by a factor of ~1350, and that’s based off the simple fact that one dollar is supposed to be worth one gold coin weighing one ounce, and isn’t even supposed to be paper at all, it’s supposed to be gold and silver bullion coin, read the Constitution.

The dollar bill isn‘t worth the ink and the paper it’s printed on.

You’re getting paid in a paper check, just to cash it for a bunch of smaller paper checks. All IOUS.

Nobody cares about your classical ways to calculate whether or not taxes are too damn high.

TEA PARTY means we’re TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY.

Besides, you failed your own fallible criteria by suggesting that 1) Employment hours haven’t created a disincentive to work – simply because the government is handing out so much welfare and unemployment benefits that people aren‘t even willing to go out and look for a job until they’ve milked the cow for all it’s worth. You’re also not considering the hidden tax of out of control government spending which helped to devalue the dollar to the factor of 1350 as I previously pointed out.

And 2) You‘ve already lost the argument that international markets aren’t benefitting from outsourcing and the lack of tariffs as prescribed by the Constitution on trade, and totally disregarding the fact that
businesses in America are increasingly seeking cheaper labor and fleeing from the pervasive progressive tax structure that is set to increase dramatically. Businesses fear what tax hammer is going to drop next, suppressing employment, innovation, investment, and lending.

Whether you like it or not, the Fed has failed miserably to do anything substantial to avoid this economic crisis, even to the degree that they actually CAUSED the economic crisis, and needs to be audited and dissolved, despite their claims that their actions in cooperation with the richest banks and the Treasury run by former Federal Reserve chairman Tim Geithner has averted a global economic collapse.

I choose to look at inflation because, even if you’re not educated, as you clearly aren’t, it isnt’t a difficult thing to calculate. All your esoteric Keynesian ecnomic garbage doesn’t change simple mathematics. Inflation is devaluation of the dollar, period. The only reason the Fed is “worried” about the deflation of the dollar is because the dollar bubble is going to burst regardless, and the value of the dollar is going to decrease by a factor of at least 1300, which is $50 – the face value of a gold coin weighing one ounce. Idiot. That‘s why people are buying gold like crazy because they’re trying to shore up againt the collapse of the dollar bubble – i.e. deflation.

Next time you think you’re going to tonguelash me with your Keynesian psychobabble, you ought to realize who you’re dealing with. I have a certified I.Q. of 172 confirmed by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children in 8th grade, and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale in 2005. Nice try.

The only thing propping up the valueless dollar is the purchasing of our own bonds and the Treasury Inflation Protected Securities.

I wear a black suit everyday whether I like it or not, I’m African American. I don’t have to wear black gloves to make that apparent.

Your lame cliches need some work.

Yes. Let’s get rid of all welfare. But let’s start with corporate welfare, since it is one of the biggest pieces and it goes to the rich and powerful rather than those that are needy. Each year during his administration, Bush passed a tax holiday so overseas funds could be brought state side tax free. He also allowed accelerated depreciation to limit taxes to manufacturers, who used that incentive to move production off shore. He also bailed out the airlines after 9/11, and approved tariffs to be collected by steel and other industries that complained about tough foreign competition that was apparently dumping in the states. As a result of these and many other tax breaks, corporations, which the GOP likes to say face the highest tax rate in the world, actually pay real tax rates in the bottom third of the OECD average–their share of tax revenue has dropped from 400 basis points as a percentage of the total through the Bush years. Ralph Nader complained loudly about this, but the GOP and the Tea Party have said nothing. Meanwhile, in the midst of the toughest downturn since ‘29, the conservatives continue to insist that anyone without a job is a lazy bum. What nonsense. I have friends with degrees from Harvard that could steal the job of anyone here on the basis of their competence and energy, but they cannot find work. When I see a conservative crying out against corporate welfare with the same intensity that they attack those who require a temporary hand-out to stay afloat until things get better–something your AK candidate Joe Miller did, although you ignore that one too–then I’ll feel like there is some humanity in the conservative movement. Until then, I think the humanity gets lost in the extreme ideology–just like what happens to any group of ideologues who care about ideas more than people.

Why is it that there is no room between pure laissez-faire capitalism and pure communism? This is especially strange given the fact that pure laissez-faire capitalism and pure communism do not even exist. Calling for government regulations to rein in the worst aspects of capitalism is not a call to dismantle the whole system. And a complaint that many people cannot afford the basics like rent or food is not a call for the workers of the world to unite in violent revolution. Rather, it is a call for some sort of safety net that apparently the charities are not providing. This is not the first time in history when capitalism and charity have failed us, and the government has needed to step in a limited way that leave capitalism intact but restores the humanity of the downtrodden. One only need read Sinclair or Dickens to see that we’ve seen this movie before, and have not watched the destruction of capitalism subsequent to such calls and reforms. Read any history or literature?

The whole Crux of communism is to eliminate PRIVATE ownership of everything, and force people to RENT directly from the government, and to do that, you have to DO what the Government tells you!! IE: student loans, healthcare, food stamps, —That my friend, is Communism!! have you ever been to Cuba, North Korea, East Germany etc? look at their living conditions and tell me you are ready to revert back to living in sqaulor!! Scully,

“why dont you read a little more on facts and less on emotional commentary!” Says the guy who writes with a dozen exclamation points…

There are a lot of progressives who have jobs in this capitalist economy and who do not seek its overthrow but recognize that markets need regulations. That group outnumbers the whacko’s you cite by at least three orders of magnitude. It’s easy to debate the dumb strawmen, but it really makes you, like Hannity, look like a intellectual lightweight afraid of real analysis. Let’s stop making such ridiculous comments and focus on what guys like Warren Buffett (a Democrat and liberal), who has become the second or third richest guy in the world, while calling for lots of regulations, has said over the last decade or more. That would be a good start for someone like you.

Also, we‘ve had rent control at various times over the last 50 years and it hasn’t turned us into East Germany or North Korea. I visited the former country, not to mention Hungary and Czechoslovakia, before the wall came down, so I know that those places were very different than the world of rent control in the 70s and 80s in Boston or NY. You draw comparisons between apples and hand grenades when you make such analogies. Again, let’s be more reasonable and thoughtful, shall we?

You cannot become a superpower without the IRS, since that is who raises the money for the defense budget. Further, the difference between the US and China or Hungary–the latter just had the toxic mud/sludge slide, you will recall, while the middle kingdom lets its companies put melamine in the milk supply–is that we enforce food and drug safety laws that have served our citizens’ health well. The recent financial crisis, brought on by insufficient regulation, has set us back, so I don’t think regulation is always to blame–particularly following an era of too little oversight, as Buffett presciently noted back in ‘05.

Actually, charities took a hit when tax rates came down under Bush back in ‘02-’03, creating less of an incentive to donate. Then, they came down again in ‘08 when the recession caused people to give a lot less. You are so eager to blame Obama that you ignore the bigger declines that occurred even before he arrived at the WH. Please explain that to me. Also, please reconcile your claims of tight-fisted control with genius Buffett‘s explanation of why we went off the rails in ’07, which prominently includes lack of regulation. Given his expertise in finance and economics, not to mention his unprecedented success as an investor and predictor of future financial issues, I would love to hear you critique the guy. That ought to be fun. Incidentally, even his partner, Charlie Munger, who is a Republican, agrees with that assessment. So please tell me how an intelligent Dem and Republican are BOTH saying something totally different than you.

Scully, you continue to insist that the really dumb, extremist liberals speak for everyone on the left, which makes you look as silly as the left-wing loonies. Try arguing with a smart liberal rather than the strawmen you highlight. Warren Buffett predicted the financial crisis in ‘04 and highlighted the lack of regulation as the major problem. That he predicted it, while conservatives like Laffer and Kudlow were saying everything was fine is more than enough evidence to show who really knows what they are talking about. And Buffett’s critique calls for more regulation, not less. You say the US was impeded from becoming a superpower because of the IRS and EPA, but the US couldn’t build a powerful military without the IRS. And the EPA has protected us from suffering the kinds of poisonings that occur regularly in China, where companies are free to pollute and poison their citizens with impunity. Perhaps smart people in this country would like to be a superpower AND not watch their babies almost die from melamine in their milk.
