Harry Reid’s Surprising NPR Defense: I Heard a ‘Great Piece’ on Dog Racing Once

If you ask Harry Reid why NPR should keep its public funding, he might tell you about the really good report he heard on dog racing. That’s at least the story he launched into on the Senate floor last night. Seriously.

The Hill reports that after Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) began praising participants of the legendary Iditarod dog-sled race, Reid couldn’t help but interject an epiphany.

“They had a really, really good piece on public radio before the start of the race,” explained Reid. “I hesitate saying this because I know I will probably get in trouble, but this is a good reason why the House vote was bad today to defund public radio.”

Hint: if you have to interject the phrase “I know I will probably get in trouble,” what follows might be best kept to yourself.

It is pretty pathetic – that Harry Reid is still around.

I heard a good story, too – Harry – how voting machines delivered by union workers – just so happened to have votes already “tallied” for you – and then Nevada had a power outrage – in the middle of the election – and voila! – Reid is ahead when the lights come back on –
although Reid was slightly lagging behind Tea Party candidate Sharon Angle prior to the black-out – and in all the polls prior to the election.

Harry is at it again. First he is almost in tears because of the Cowboy Poets hootenanny may be defunded, and now we need to keep funding NPR because Harry heard a good story about racing dogs once? That’s worth hundreds of millions dollars a year. I bet he listened to it while wearing nothing but his cowboy hat and wooly chaps. Have to go now. Got a mental picture and now have to go vomit.

A necessary service will find a way to make a profit and stay open. If not another way will be found like Ham radio that was used before public radio. With sat internet PBS is fast becoming obsolete. Face book, tweet and e-mail. Besides PBS competes unfairly with advertised supported radio and TV. Let PBS go in the way of the buggy whip.

Agreed – They keep saying the rural areas have no other talk radio to listen to BUT the USDA has Funded Broadband Internet to Rural Missouri and I suspect other states thru the stimulus bills. So the argument that the rural areas have nothing but NPR is a moot point. You know Obama and Reid are financing the poor and rural area broadband giving them access to any broadcasts. I happen to live in rural Missouri by the way and do not support public broadcasting.

Actually, to answer your question, I think part of it is some persons feel uncomfortable listening to diverse programming. Others are on a kind of “bandwagon” being led by populist controllers who are intent upon “dumbing down the populace” so it is easy to influence political ends. Others are trying to demonize and vilify “elitist” targets to keep the masses in a state of circus anger. They pick a topic of the week, like “ground zero mosques,“ ”evil unions,” and so forth to stir folks up. “Shiny Object Theory”

I do not give a flip about NPR. Why do you? Why is this such a big deal to progressives? Especially when they go out of their way to make the point that it is only a small part of their funding? So just cut it? NPR can survive on its own, as can PBS. Especially if all the “cultured” people support it.

I want to cut EVERY dollar I can. I want to totally and fully defund the federal government. I want congressmen sleeping on cots in their office, eating ramen noodles. I want public officials earning LESS than 4th year military personnel. I want to get rid of EVERY single department and administration that is not needed, starting with the useless department of education. The FCC? Yeah, gone…Give it back to the states or private industry. Social Security? I do not care if it is not the big problem republicans make it out to be, it is still a money vacuum. Buh-bye! Medicare? Yep…Oughta here. It ALL goes!

What about the poor who cant afford food? I get so sick of seeing people in grocery stores buying NAME BRAND goods, eating steak and lobster, buying cart fulls of soda and potato chips and watching them pay in food stamps while I eat Great Value crap and meat twice a week if I am lucky! I have the answer! I do not mind paying so the poor can eat. They can set up a special counter in every store, in a conspicuous place where everyone can see you there, and you can go pick up a cardboard box with a sack of sugar, a sack of flour, a bag of dried beans, a box of rice, a couple loafs of bread, two gallons of milk, can of coffee, and I will even let you have some lesser quality cuts of meat! That is your food for a week. You will not starve, hell, you will eat better than most people in the world!

Common sense, that is what I ask. Screw NPR!

      PLM,

I do not even care about the liberal bias. If they were conservatively balanced i would say the same thing. If I found out FNC was being partially funded by the government I would demand it stop.

Listen, you take a lot of flak in here, and I do not think you are a troll. I would love to buy you dinner and talk to you face to face for a few hours just to try and understand you. This is not a partisan thing, I want the government OUT of my business. I simply do not understand why anyone would feel differently. Do you support all the government waste? Do you not want to see all this useless stuff cut? I am all for a social safety net, we need to take care of the poor. But the system needs to be cleaned up and protected from abuse. Health care…The problem is not insurance companies, it is in the cost of health care. Government needs to regulate the OBSCENE cost of health care, start with the pharmaceutical companies…It will never happen because BOTH parties cannot piss off their money base….If average, middle class people could afford health care out of their own pocket there would not be a need for the system we have in place. Insurance would be affordable and only used for extreme emergencies like heart bypasses and such.

There are answers but it requires that the majority of us stand up and say ENOUGH! Just enough…Republican, democrat…It does not matter…

But of course I forget I am talking to a “progressive.” How do YOU define that? What is YOUR ideal? What do YOU want? Do you honestly want a socialized system? Do you really think government can control us?

      Posted on March 18, 2011 at 3:10pm

I do think that Health Care is something that should be socialized, because many of the companies that deal with medical care stop caring about the reason they are there (The Patients) and only care about how much money they can get. The government should heavily regulate that, if not control it.

    • trolltrainer
      Posted on March 18, 2011 at 3:47pm

I think the biggest problem facing health care is that it already IS partly socialized. It needs to be either totally government controlled or totally private. I think if the government stepped aside most of the problems would fix themselves. The key is to get costs down. If insurance has to compete it would self-regulate. If government money was not available the cost of overhead would drop. Medicare is a necessity, but if you brought prices in line then medicare would not be supporting the great numbers that it currently is. Insurance needs to be affordable to minimum wage earners. But attacking the insurance companies without doing anything about the costs of medical care is only going to bankrupt the system.

This is one of the hardest problems facing us. Socialized health care does have advantages, but it also has a great many pitfalls. With the way the system is set up now it would only serve to bankrupt this country. You progressives are right about one thing, it will not work unless it is a single payer system. I do not see that happening. Instead both sides are playing tug-o-war with our health care and EVERYONE loses.

His point is actually a good one. Npr has interesting and diverse programming on american life that needs to be heard in a field dominated by clear channel crap. If you dont want npr then you have to be willing to defund the fcc and truly let the airwaves go to the highest bidder. Shows like prairie home companion are priceless. If we cant fund the arts and education we will die as a country. It doesnt say that the government cannot fund worthy enterprises, and npr is worthy.

The government funding of Corporation for Public Broadcasting —there is no direct funding of either NPR or PBS — is highly regulated and restricted, meaning NPR cannot charge Satellite and Cable carriers like other networks, and is restricted from competition.
Once they are de-funded these laws should be repealed, to even the playing field.
Also, Federal tax breaks, investments and guarantees to NBC, CBS, and Fox should be cut from all federal budgets beginning in 2014.

That’s horse apples, and you know it!!!

We didn’t have “arts and education” or even “NPR” when we were founded, and we didn’t die as a country! It’s more likely we will die as a country because of the egregious spending by the Democrats who are working hard to bankrupt this country.

@Arminianism, don’t blame all of us. I froze my a** off to attend the Tea Party rally in Reid’s hometown and I voted against him. But the casinos support Reid because he protects their interests. SEIU with all of their illegal alien members and the construction unions are very big here. It’s a shame.

OK than lets FUND NPR and take away some MORE things for the poor and seniors .. already OBAMA who’s EPA hacks are going to OUT LAW Mercury (which BTW.. how can they do that and tell us we HAVE to have mercury filled light bulbs in our homes) which will make COAL prices increase and coal is 45% of our energy.. which will make energy for ALL necessarily skyrocket.. CUT the funding for heating help for the poor and seniors..and somehow GOOD OLD BOY HARRY is worried about NPR??? Here’s another one that has dementia.. however typical liberal thinking worry about T.V. rather than pay for what is truly necessary..

Get rid of Harry too. His last election was a fraud. He is not the legitimately elected Senator from Nevada. What he is, is a corrupt idiot. He did vote no, not once, but twice for the health care bill. That takes brains. He doesn‘t have the mental capacity to perform his duties and he’s an embarrassment to our country. If I were a liberal I would have to kick my own ass because this kind of buffoon is the best they can up with. Pathetic is the only word that describes Harry accurately!

      NO WAY!

DO NOT let NPR / PBS “die on the vine” – SELL THEM to the highest bidder!

Those organizations are collectively worth several $Billion. The taxpayers built them and should realize maximum beneit from that expensive effort via an open market sale of either the entirety of both operations or the bits and pieces which comprise the bulk of the value. Just tearing them down – or allowing them to go off on their own without any compensation to the taxpayer – is criminally stupid.

I can no longer call Harry Reid an idiot because I think he’s one smart cookie who has bought his office for many, many (to many) years. He acts like a dolt because he can get more that way. In Nv. he is so corrupt the big boys keep him in office because they know he can be bought and sold. He puts on his act because it pays off for him. The bad boy knows what he’s doing, mark my words.

Shocking! Harry Reid! NPR is a waste of taxpayer money. Not to mention the fact that the government should have no financial relationship with the media. We need real cuts to tackle the budget now. It is gonna be unpleasant but if the next generations are to have a chance we need to step up now and fix it.
Please Harry sit down and shut up.

The lamestream media are bemoaning the fact that Repubs want to kill off Big Bird by eliminating public funding. That is a whopping big lie because Sesame Street and all of its furry/feathered inhabitants are making obscenely large amounts of money on their own without any govt funding. The lib media allow themselves to be used as propaganda machines without any concerns about ethics and telling the truth. When will their journalistic consciences ever kick in?
