Harry Reid: I Had Nothing to Do With Economic Slump

While Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid tries to fight off a tough re-election challenge from Republican Sharron Angle, he’s struggling to convince Nevada voters that he deserves to be sent back to Washington.

In an interview with ABC News, Reid did hesitate to attack Angle, characterizing her as “quite extreme,“ with a ”long list of negative hits.”  Meanwhile, he insisted that he doesn‘t bear any responsibility for the nation’s economic downturn that has hit Nevada especially hard.

“You know that I had nothing to do with the massive foreclosures here. You know that I had nothing to do with these unemployment figures,” Reid says. “In fact, I’ve worked hard to change them. My job is to create jobs.  My opponent says that is not her job to create jobs. And I think that is really wrong. I think it is my job to create jobs and I’ve done my best. Is there more that needs to take place? Of course, there is.”

While dismissing self-blame, Reid stuck to an old talking point for Democrats, blaming former President Bush for Nevada’s downward slide:

“For 20 years this was the place to come. When the situation occurred on Wall Street — the collapse took place — we were so high, we had so far to fall. And we’re struggling to get back where we were. We have, as you know, the president has created, with Congress, three and a half million jobs. We have, because of what took place in the Bush years, lost eight million. So we have a long ways to go. But I think it would take a real stretch to think that I caused the problems with the economy.”

In a statement this afternoon from the Angle campaign, spokesman Jarrod Agen responded to Reid’s accusations:

“Harry Reid is making crazy statements while claiming absolutely no responsibility for the economy and the jobless rate in his own state. Yet, by the same token, he wants credit for creating 3.5 million jobs somewhere else… Harry Reid needs to stop running from his failed record and start taking responsibility for what he’s done to destroy the Nevada economy. If the Senate Majority Leader has absolutely nothing to do with unemployment or the economy, why is Harry Reid always asking for credit for doing ‘more for Nevada?’”

    Reid’s statement is completely wrong. You do not create jobs, the private sector does. Your job is to stop making it harder for those jobs to be created. If you could create jobs like you do deficits, there would be no unemployment.

    Mr Reid,
    Your job is not to create jobs, rather it is to create a policy to allow the private sector to create jobs.
    Here is a policy that will do just that:

    If this simple plan was enacted our economy would begin to recover in weeks

    If congress and the president were to have a window period of 0% capital gains tax on any real estate purchased it would get the investors to let loose of some of the trillions of dollars they are sitting on and buy property which will create jobs.

    * This should only be allowed for properties bought from the day it is passed moving forward for a window period of 3 months or 6 months or whatever. We should then analyze it and adjust the window as necessary. It should not be used for properties already owned because that would flood the market, we want people to want to buy instead of sell to create demand again so that prices will stabilize and consumers will begin to have confidence in their homes and begin to spend again to support the economy and create jobs.

    * This should qualify for any buyer of any property whether it be an investment, owner occupied or commercial. The goal is to get the big investors with all their cash on the sidelines to start buying to stimulate the recovery and also to make it widespread so to have a quick effect. This will bring quick money into the treasury by quickly creating jobs and consumer confidence.

    * The new property purchased should have no restrictions on when you sell it, if sold in 1 day, 1 year 10 years or 100 years it should be exempt from capital gains tax. This will be the quickest way to incentivize buyers, remember this is just a window period and we can adjust the window anytime either to avoid over heating or lack of desired results.

    The largest commodity held by Americans is real estate and over the last 3 years as their home values dropped they lost confidence in their future. If home prices stabilize and slowly begin to increase again people will start regaining confidence, they will also hire builders, painters, landscapers, plumbers, Realtors, loan and mortgage officers etc. They will also spend on vacations, restaurants, new cars, etc. In my opinion, one mistake the current administration did was the cash for clunkers, why in the world would we incentivise people to put a monkey on their back in the form of a higher payment to purchase a depreciating asset when we could incentivise them to purchase property that typically can go up in value and then they would buy the car on their own along with other goods and services?

    Another great reason to put the 0% window on the cap gains is because for all practical purposes there is no cap gains tax being collected now anyway because nobody is selling at a profit so there is little to lose and much to gain.

    Also by doing this foreclosures will cease quickly and banks will begin lending again. Banks will realize that values have stabilized and not be so fearful of lending.

    Sure, this will probably help the professional investor but most importantly it will create jobs for the guy who has to put food on the table for his children. We need to get the big money that the investors have buried back into the system and real estate is the best way because it will create a snowball effect of jobs.

      You seem to forget how well the economy rebounded after 9/11 and the .com debacle. The economy did pretty well for most of the Bush administration. I’ve found it interesting how the lending crisis seemed so well timed for election day. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I’ve often wondered what kind of orchestration could have been employed by the left to pull that one off.

    Can’t have it both ways Harry. He was the Senate Majority leader since 2006. No bills get passed without going through the Senate and he is the Senate Majority leader. Not only that his party has a super-majority. To try to say that he has no responsibility for what is happening would only be believed by the most radical or stupid person.       It always baffles me how the media seem to overlook to fact that the Democrats had a super majority for the last two years of Bush’s term, just before the bottom dropped out. And that it was the Fannie/Freddie debacle created by Democrats that Bush and McCain warned against that was the root cause of the crisis. Why this “blame Bush” routine still has any traction is beyond me!!!

      ANY MEMBER OF THE TEA PARTY THAT NEVER SERVED IN THE MILITARY MUST OVERCOMPENSATE BY FLYING THE AMERICAN FLAG EVERYWHERE AND SAY THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE LOUDLY TO PROVE HE OR SHE LOVES AMERICA, BUT WAS TOO COWARDLY TO SERVE IN THE MILITARY.

      I MUST HELP ENRICH ALL THE LEADERS OF THE TEA PARTY BY BUYING THEIR BOOKS AND ATTENDING SPEECHES.

      BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, IF THERE ARE REPUBLICANS ARE IN OFFICE WE MUST STAY SILENT WHILE THEY RUN UP DEFICITS AND DEBT. WE ONLY BLAME THE AFRICAN AMERICANS FOR ALL OUR PROBLEMS.
